Many high school basketball standouts in Wisconsin go on to big things at the college level and in the pros, and this is our spot to recognize those athletes each week and help you keep up with what is going down on some of your favorite players from the past. If you have alumni news, please send it to Colton Wilson by 6 p.m. on Mondays.

Alumni Update

Three weeks. That is all that is left of the college basketball regular season around the country. Teams are making their finals runs for conference championships, and games are becoming more high stakes. With that, comes more highlight filled performances.

The Western Illinois basketball team hasn’t enjoyed the success it would like this season in the Summit League. However, River Valley High School’s Brandon Gilbeck had an outstanding performance in a 79-64 loss to Purdue Fort Wayne. Gilbeck recorded a triple-double by scoring 12 points, hauling in 16 rebounds, and collecting 10 blocks for the Leathernecks.

The NACC was once again scattered with big time performances throughout the conference from in-state alumni.

Luther High School’s Collin Kennedy leads the NACC in scoring this season, and last week he put on another outstanding performance. In Wisconsin Lutheran’s 78-76 win over Concordia-Wisconsin, Kennedy had a game high 26 points and 9 rebounds. He scored the final 8 points, including the game-winning free throws with three seconds left. Teammate Andrew Bruggink (Brookfield Central) added 20 points. Collin followed that game up with another game high 25 points in an 86-74 win over Marian. Teammate Matty Farner (Muskego) had 14 points and 14 rebounds. Collin was named the NACC Player of the Week for his performances, and is currently 153 points away from becoming the conference’s all-time leading scorer.

Edgewood College connected on 17 three-pointers in a 109-94 win over Rockford in NACC action. Sy Staver (Mineral Point), Jake Negus (Janesville Craig), Emil Radisevic (Brookfield Central), Jaden Lechelt (Madison West), Ben Seefeld (Arrowhead), and Jacob Miller (Waunakee) combined for 15 of those from beyond the arc.

In other NACC action, Lakeland College was aided to two victories behind the play of many alumni. Eric Nygaard (Plymouth) and Zach Hasenstein (Sheboygan North) each scored over 20 points as Lakeland beat Concordia-Chicago 100-83. Pat McDonald (Port Washington) added 14 points and 13 assists. McDonald then had 23 points while Nygaard had 13 points and 10 rebounds in an 80-78 win over Aurora. Carlos Campos (Janesville Parker) added 14 points, including the game-winning three point shot with three seconds left.

North Dakota State scored an 81-71 win over Denver University this past week. Tyree Eady was a huge reason why. The freshman from Middleton High School scored a season high 16 points in the victory.

Like Tyree, Shareef Smith played in the Big Eight Conference in high school for Madison Memorial. Also like Tyree, Shareef scored a season high last weekend as Eastern Illinois lost to Austin Peay 94-86. Smith scored 29 points on 11 of 16 shooting.

In continuing with the season high scoring trend, three D2 athletes did just that this past week.

Oshkosh North graduate Blake Marquardt scored a season high 29 points off the bench as Lake Superior State beat Wayne State 90-66. Blake shot 7 of 14 from beyond in the arc in the victory.

Taurus Adams is next as he helped lead Southern Connecticut State to a 98-81 win over Saint Rose behind his season high 25 points. Taurus, a Brown Deer graduate, shot 9 of 14 from the field in the win.

Lastly, Davis Larson did all he could to propel Hillsdale to victory, however they came up just short in a 75-70 loss to Findlay. Larson, a Sheboygan North alum, scored a season and career high 26 points while shooting 10 of 15 from the field.

To finish the trend of season high scoring outputs, Chris Knight was an absolute wrecking ball on the court for Dartmouth despite an 83-80 loss to Cornell. The Madison Memorial grad scored 27 points while adding 4 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 blocks in the tough loss.

UW-Oshkosh secured an outright WIAC Championship this past week by the continued excellent play of the plethora of in-state alumni it has on its roster. Jack Flynn just happened to be in the spotlight this week as he was named the WIAC Player of the Week. The Appleton West alum averaged 15 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 2 blocks in the three victories. Down 81-75 in overtime to UW-La Crosse, Flynn took over and scored the subsequent six points to tie the game before UW-Oshkosh secured an 83-81 win.

In another WIAC thriller, UW-Whitewater secured a 79-77 victory over UW-Stout on a last second jumper from Kenosha Indian Trail’s Andre Brown. Brown scored a team high 19 points for the Warhawks. On the other bench, Luke Geiger (Burlington) scored 27 points, while Jon Ciriacks (East Troy) added 24 for UW-Stout.

Nick McGlynn has put together an incredible season at Drake University this season. The Stoughton High School alum was a key reason why Drake beat Northern Iowa 83-77 last week. Nick scored 22 points and hauled in 7 rebounds in the victory. In doing so, Nick crossed the 1,000 point milestone in his collegiate carerer.

St. Norbert College won a wild 116-97 game over Grinnell College in Midwest Conference play last week behind many in-state alumni contributions. Logan Krekling (The Prairie School) scored a career high 17 points while adding 10 rebounds. Nolan Beirne (New Holstein) had a team high 21 points. Joe Ciriacks (East Troy), Joe Lemon (Brookfield Academy), and Jacob Bolwerk (Living Word Lutheran) all aded double-digit scoring outputs.
