Girls Basketball Alumni Round-up: February 15th

Many high school basketball standouts in Wisconsin go on to big things at the college level and in the pros, and this is our spot to recognize those athletes each week and help you keep up with what is going down on some of your favorite players from the past. Alumni Update

Three weeks is all that separates D1 girls college basketball from now and the beginning of conference tournament season. With that being said, regular season conference races are heating up and with that comes more and more impressive performances from in-state recruits.

Mariah Miller has been a steadying force for Cleveland State in the Horizon League throughout this season. Last week, the Brookfield East grad had quite the memorable game in a 74-48 win over UIC. Mariah scored a career high 25 points while snagging 12 rebounds in the victory. Teammate Savanna Crockett (Milwaukee Vincent) had 11 points and 11 rebounds and Rachel Slaney (Barneveld) added 16 points. Mariah though, was named the Horizon League Player of the Week for her career day.

Michigan Tech saw another former alumni garner Player of the Week honors for the second week in a row in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Little Chute’s Abbie Botz had 17 points and 7 rebounds in a 70-40 win over Northwood. She followed that up with 22 points and 17 rebounds in a 79-54 win over Saginaw Valley. Abbie was named the GLIAC-North Player of the Week a week after teammate, and Waukesha North grad, Elizabeth Kelliher did.

Speaking of Elizabeth, her sister Jessica continues to dominate D2 college basketball for Lewis College. In a 71-60 win over Bellarmine, she had 34 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 2 steals. She followed that up with 23 points, 9 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 2 steals in a 97-54 win over Southern Indiana. Jessica was named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week yet again. Currently, Jessica has 2,511 career points which puts her ninth all-time in division 2 history.

Kari Brekke continues to put together an impressive freshman season for New Hampshire. The Appleton North grad led her team in points in back-to-back victories over Umass Lowell and Binghamton last week. She averaged 15 points a game en route to being named the America East Conference Rookie of the Week for the third time this season. Kari leads all freshmen athletes with 10.4 points per game in the conference.

Shae Brey took advantage of her second and third starts this season for the Butler Bulldogs. The former Regis standout had 12 points and 5 rebounds in an 83-62 loss to Seton Hall. She then followed that up with 13 points and 7 rebounds in a 63-38 win over Xavier. The two games were the first two for Shae scoring in double figures. She shot 11 of 13 from the field on the week as well.

In WIAC action, Olivia Freckmann was a pivotal piece to why UW-Whitewater picked up three victories last week. First in a 78-70 win over UW-Oshkosh, Olivia had 14 points and 13 rebounds. She then had 27 points and 6 rebounds in a 70-58 win over UW-Stevens Point. She finished the week off with another double-double by registering 11 points and 10 rebounds in a 74-60 win over UW-Stout. Olivia was named the WIAC Player of the Week for her performance.

In other WIAC play, Emma Gamoke was red hot as UW-La Crosse defeated UW-Eau Claire 62-50. the Onalaska High School alum had a career high 34 points in the win.

In a Mid America Conference matchup between Northern Illinois and Ball State, that saw UNI win 93-84, each team’s leading scorer was from the Badger State. Mikayla Voigt of Kettle Moraine Lutheran led the victorious NIU team with 37 points. Ball State was led in scoring by Jasmin Samz of Wausau West with 23 points. The scoring output was a season high for Samz, as she also added 3 blocks.

A week after winning Northern Sun Conference Player of the Week honors, Minnesota State-Mankato’s Taylor Drost put up a career high in an 84-71 wino ver Minnesota Crookston. The DSHA grad scored 32 points while adding 3 blocks in the victory.

Last week Emma Meriggioili (Edgewood) was highlighted for her play for Cal Baptist. This week, teammate and Arrowhead grad Caitlyn Harper took the spotlight. In a 93-67 win over Chicago State, Harper scored 13 points on 5 of 5 shooting. She followed that up with 17 points in a 95-92 double overtime win over UMKC. Caitlyn his the game-tying shot to force overtime with very little time reaming in regulation.

DeForest High School’s Kayla Goth has been mentioned numerous times in weeks past of the alumni round-up, and for good reason. Goth put up back-to-back double-doubles as Kansas State collected a pair of Big 12 wins. First in a 72-62 win over Kansas, Kayla had 19 points and 10 assists. She followed that up with 13 points and 12 assists in an 83-75 win over Oklahoma. Kayla has put up double-digit assist totals in five games this season.

South Shore’s Megan Gustafson put up two double-doubles and earned Big Ten Player of the Week. No that is not from last week, or any other week, that is just another instance of Megan’s dominance this year in women’s basketball. Megan led the fourteenth ranked Iowa Hawkeyes to a pair of wins as she averaged 35 points and 15 rebounds en route to her eleventh player of the week nod this year.
