Many high school basketball standouts in Wisconsin go on to big things at the college level and in the pros, and this is our spot to recognize those athletes each week and help you keep up with what is going down on some of your favorite players from the past. If you have alumni news, please send it to Colton Wilson by 6 p.m. on Mondays.

Alumni Update

High school boys basketball is down to its last week of the regular season in the state with playoffs beginning next Tuesday. Around the country, NAIA and D3 basketball has also ended their regular seasons while D2 and D1 are winding down.

In D3 basketball, UW-La Crosse did something that no other WIAC team has been able to do all season, hand UW-Oshkosh a loss. In a 66-61 win, UW-La Crosse was aided to the win by multiple athletes. Ben Meinholz (Marquette) had 12 points, including six of the last eight for La Crosse. Josh Dahlke (Tomah) had a season high 11 points. Taulvish McCray (Neenah) has been a leader all season on the court for La Crosse and had 8 points and 3 assists. To finish the season, McCray then had 11 points and 2 steals in a 66-54 win over UW-Stout. Taulvish was named the WIAC Player of the Week as he led La Crosse to its most wins in a season since 2013-14.

Regis High School’s Bill Wampler has been a steadying force off the bench for Wright State this season. Wampler had his best game to date in an 81-77 win over Northern Kentucky, which tied Wright State at the top of the Horizon League standings. Bill had a career high 29 points as he shot 10 of 14 from the field. Wampler scored 6 of his teams last 11 points en route to being named the Horizon League Player of the Week.

Teams in the NACC concluded their regular seasons this past week as Concordia Wisconsin and MSOE tied for the regular season championship.

In an 85-76 victory over Benedictine, Jordan Johnson of Cedarburg had 23 points, 11 rebounds, and 6 assists for Concordia. Teammate Jake Jurss (Sheboygan Lutheran) had a team high 24 points.

Marian University was led to victory by a trio of in-state recruits as they squeaked by Concordia-Chicago 91-83. Racine Case’s Tyrese Pinson and Mayville’s Caleb Martin each recorded a double-double in the win while Tristan Van Ess (Oostburg) had a team high 20 points.

Kentucky has been a perennial powerhouse in college basketball for years now under head coach John Calipari. Tyler Herro is another of the highly regarded freshman to play well for Kentucky. It just so happens that Tyler is from Whitnall High School. Herro has started every game this season and was a big reason why the Wildcats knocked off previously #1 Tennessee. Tyler had 15 points and 13 rebounds to record his first double-double of the season.

Sandy Cohen III has been a do-it-all kind of player throughout his collegiate career at UW-Green Bay and the statistics show. Cohen, a Seymour grad, currently is in the top eight in the Horizon League in the following categories: points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks. Last week as UW-Green Bay beat Detroit Mercy 82-73, Sandy had 23 points, 14 rebounds, and 8 assists.

Lindenwood University snagged a pair of victories last week behind the stellar play of Chandler Diekvoss. The West De Pere grad and 2013-14 All-State selectee had a game high 23 points and 10 rebounds in a 73-67 win over Fort Hays State. He followed that up with another game high 25 points and 8 rebounds in a 73-65 win over Nebraska-Kearney. Chandler was named the Mid America Intercollegiate Conference’s Player of the Week.

Wofford University has always been a great mid-major basketball program in years past. This year is no different as the Terriers carry a 23-4 record. Middleton’s Storm Murphy has been an importance piece to the puzzle all year long as he’s hit game-winners and been a floor general on the court. Last week in a 95-84 win over VMI, Storm had a team high 19 points as Wofford clinched the Southern Conference regular season championship.

Brandon Myer has been absolutely spectacular in his junior season at Minnesota-Duluth. The Superior grad was right back at it this past week. Despite a 72-70 loss to Northern State, Myer had 34 points and 13 rebounds for Duluth. He followed that up with 27 points and 14 rebounds in a 78-76 win over Minnesota State-Moorhead. Brandon hit the game-winning free throws with just over 10 seconds left in play. Brandon was named the Northern Sun-North Player of the Week. Myer is one of four players in all of Division 2 basketball to average over 20 points and 10 rebounds a game. He currently has 11 double-doubles on the season.
