Week 1 will consist of games played between the 16 and the 20th of August.
Every week I will be doing a “Kyle’s Five”, which will take notice of five teams and five players throughout the state whose performances I have chosen to highlight.
Week 1 team performances:
Madison West- The Regents definitely made their voices heard around Big Eight Conference by putting in an impressive weekend performance at the Waunakee Invite. West went undefeated going 3 to 0 against a very competitive field. In their first game they squared off against a tough Appleton Xavier team. They were able to prevail by way of a 3 to 1 score. In the next two games Madison West would play two previous state quarterfinalists in Eau Claire Memorial and De Pere winning both games by the score of 2 to 0 and 2 to 1 respectively. West is currently 4-0-0 on the season.
Pulaski- In a dominating fashion, the Pulaski Red Raiders effortlessly dispatched their opponents. In their three games against Clintonville, Kaukauna, and Appleton East, Pulaski scored an amazing 18 goals while not allowing a single ball to touch the back of the net. That is an outstanding 18 to 0 scoring margin in three victories.
Milwaukee Marquette- In a game pitting potentially two top 10 teams against one another, Marquette was able to make a bold statement. They are a force to be reckoned with in 2011. They easily handled a very good Waukesha West team by racing out to a 6 to 0 lead. West would later get a late extra time consolation goal to put them on the scoreboard but it was too late. Marquette’s domination had already been felt.
Green Bay NEW Lutheran- The Blazers started off the 2011 season, blazing hot (pun intended). Over the weekend, NEW Lutheran competed in the Crusader Kickoff and proved to be the class of the field. Winning all three of its’ games in convincing style, outscoring their opponents 14 to 1. The Blazers are coming off of a 20-3-1 season from a year ago and appear to have carried that momentum into this season.
Menomonee Falls- The Indians have played the most games of any team so far in this early season, six to be exact. In those six games, Menomonee Falls came away with a 4-1-1record. Besides the one set back to top 5 ranked Appleton North, the Indians have proved themselves to be rather formidable squad. After coming away from the Racine Case Invite undefeated and untested, beating Milwaukee King, Racine Horlick and Racine Park by a combined margin of 16-0. Menomonee Falls again rose to the occasion and went 1-0-1 at the Muskego Invite. Earning a 2 to 2 tie against New Berlin West and prevailing 8 to 1 over Green Bay East.
Week 1 player performances:
Patrick Hodan, Milwaukee Marquette- In just 3 minutes and 20 seconds in to the match between Marquette and Waukesha West, Patrick Hodan scored the game’s first goal. That would be the first of Hodan’s four goals, scoring four or Marquette’s six goals in a 6 to 1 defeat of Waukesha West.
Cheenuj Shong, Milwaukee Reagan/WCLL- Cheenuj Shong recorded nines goals in three games during the first week of the boys soccer season. Shong tallied a hatrick in a 4 to 2 victory against Nicolet, two goals in a 5 to 0 win over Waupaca and four goals in a close 7 to 5 victory against Oshkosh West.
Jon Bucklew, Somerset- In three games against Spooner, Osceola, and Menomonie, Jon Bucklew scored 8 goals and added 5 assists as Somerset went 1-2. Bucklew’s performance was highlighted by his 6 goals and 2 assists output against Spooner in the season opener.
Aaron Calkins, Winnebago Lutheran- Calkins has been big for Winnebago Lutheran in their first two games this season. In the first game Calkins notched 4 goals and 1 assist in a 7 to1 victory of New Holstein. In the second game his 1 goal output came up just short for his team as the Vikings lost a 2 to 3 contest against Shoreland Lutheran. In the first week Calkins has recorded 5 goals and 1 assist.
Alex Mijal, Pulaski- Mijal has been the biggest reason why Pulaski has gotten out to such a quick start. In Pulaski’s 3-0 run, Alex Mijal has scored 8 goals and added 1 assist. In his first two games he recorded hat tricks against Clintonville and Kaukauna. In their toughest test of the season against Appleton East, Mijal accounted for two of Pulaski’s three goals helping defeat to defeat the Patriots 3 to 0.
