Athlete of the Week Nominees: October 23-29

Nora Gremban, Northland Pines

Gremban improved on her finishing spot year after year the past three seasons at the WIAA Cross Country State Meet. The senior finished third as a sophomore in state, second as a junior and this year captured gold at the Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids. Gremban finished the 5,000 meter race with a time of 17:46.7. Her time was the second fastest in Division 2 State Meet history as she finished 23 seconds ahead of the second place finisher Abigail Sadler of Mount Horeb.

Kasey Helgeson, Mount Horeb/Barneveld

Helgeson was dominant as Mount Horeb/Barneveld took care of Baraboo 38-13 in a Level 2 playoff football game last Friday. The junior signal caller completed 11 of 16 passes for 211 yards and three scores in the victory. He added 78 yards and a score on the ground while also punting once for 30 yards. Helgeson and Mount Horeb came into the postseason with a perfect 9-0 record and got the top seed in their part of the bracket. They will take on a tough Notre Dame squad this Friday in a Level 3 matchup.

Autumn Michalski, Chequamegon

Michalski entered last week's state cross country meet having finished third in each of the past two seasons. The senior runner avenged those finishes, capturing gold and winning the Division 3 girls title. Michalski finished the course in a time of 18:02.0. Her time set a Division 3 State Meet record by more than 50 seconds, as she finished over 53 seconds ahead of the second place finisher.

Manny Putz, Onalaska

Putz went back-to-back as Division 1 state champion this past week at the Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids. The junior runner ran the course in 15:05.8 and won by over four seconds over Aloysius Franzen of Stevens Point. Putz' time was the third fastest in the Division 1 State Meet history. He improved upon his time from last year by over 20 seconds.

Jenna Vermillions, Fall River

Vermillion and the Fall River girls volleyball team were on a mission this past week. Win two sectional matches and advance to the WIAA State Tournament. The Pirates did just that behind Vermillion's offensive attack. In a 3-0 sweep of Oakfield in the sectional semifinals the junior outside hitter tallied 21 kills, eight digs and a block. She followed that up with 23 digs, 21 kills and an ace in a 3-1 win over Barneveld in the sectional finals. Vermillion's performance is a big reason why Fall River is heading to the WIAA State Tournament for the first time in the girls volleyball program's history.
