Athlete of the Week Nominees: February 5-11

Megan Johnson, West Salem

The West Salem girls basketball team was announced as a number one seed in the WIAA Girls Basketball Playoffs this past Sunday, as the Panthers are 19-4 on the season. Johnson has been the leader and catalyst. Just a junior, Johnson became the program's all-time leading scorer, a record which had stood for over 40 years, after dropping 25 in an 82-22 win over Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau. She also had 21 points in a 57-35 victory over Luther. Johnson now has 1,200 career points in just three seasons, with 2,000 a very real possibility next season.

Zacha King, Rhinelander

King placed first in four events at the WIAA Swimming & Diving Sectional at Ashwaubenon this past weekend. The senior swimmer won two individual events and was a part of two relay winning swims. In the second event of the day, King swam the first leg of the 200-yard medley relay team that won with a time of 1:38.68. He also swam the first leg for the 400-yard freestyle relay winning team that finished in 3:18.35. King also captured sectional titles in both the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard backstroke. He won the medley in 1:59.61 and the backstroke in 51.45 seconds.

Joey LaChapell, Appleton East

Appleton East has tallied five straight wins, including four last week as LaChapell followed up a historic week two weeks ago with more incredible play on the hardwood. The senior guard became the all-time leading scorer in Appleton East boys basketball history two weeks ago, a record his sister, Emily holds on the girls side of the program. This week, Joey began with 26 points, six assists and three rebounds in a 58-44 win over Appleton North. He then had 29 points and five assists in a 67-61 win over Fox Valley Lutheran and 20 points in a 55-35 win over Appleton West. LaChapell finished the week with 20 points, seven assists, and six rebounds in a 74-61 win over Westosha Central. For his career, LaChapell has scored over 1,300 points for the Patriots.

Ayden Phillips, Almond-Bancroft

The Almond-Bancrotf boys basketball team is 20-1 and clinched the Central Wisconsin-South title this past week behind the exceptional play of Phillips. The 6'7" junior forward led the Eagles to a 71-45 win over Manawa, tallying 23 points, 11 rebounds, and seven blocks. In a battle for the CWC-South title against Pacelli, Phillips had 21 points, seven rebounds and two blocks in the 67-61 victory. He finished the week with 16 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks in Almond-Bancroft's 91-57 win over Spencer. Phillips has recorded 15 double-doubles in 21 games this season.

Avery Poppe, Hayward

Poppe had a week to remember as she led the Hayward Hurricane girls basketball team to a pair of wins. The senior wing came one steal short of a triple-double in a 65-24 victory over Cumberland on Tuesday. She finished with a game high 26 points while adding ten rebounds and nine steals. Hayward then faced off with St. Croix Falls who came into the game with a 39-game conference winning streak in the Heart O'North. With the scored tie at 44 and 2.9 seconds on the clock, Poppe launched a three from the right corner that found the bottom of the net and won the game. Her buzzer beater ended the Saint's streak as she finished the game with 19 points, eight rebounds, four assists, two steals, and a shot to remember.
