Second WIAA state summer baseball quarterfinal final

West Salem vs. Milwaukee Marquette



FINAL -- Marquette 10, West Salem 0  (5 innings)



WP -- Colin Meyer, LP -- Dan Schneider



Marquette will meet Franklin in the first state semifinal game on Thursday at 10;05 a.m.



Next up is the afternoon quarterfinal session. The first game between West Bend West (26-5) and Arrowhead (31-5) is set to start at 3:35 p.m.



FIFTH INNING --
Nolan Peterson relieved Colin Meyer for Marquette. Peterson retired West Salem in order to end the game. Meyer and Peterson combined to retire the last 13 West Salem batters in order.



FOURTH INNING -- West Salem was retired 1-2-3 for the third straight inning. The Panthers haven't had a baserunner since opening the game with a single and a walk.  Colin Meyer has now retired 10 straight batters for Marquette.



1:36 p.m. --
Marquette takes a 10-0 lead bringing into play the mercy rule. If West Salem fails to trim its deficit to less than 10 runs in its next at bat in the fifth inning, the game will be called.



Ryan Grad led off the fourth for the Hilltoppers with a single to center. He scored on Jack Archie's double to left field. Archie was erased at third base trying to stretch his hit into a triple. Sam Beres reached base on an infield error and scored on Luke Acker's triple to right field. Acker then scored on a wild pitch.



After four innings: Marquette 10, West Salem 0.

 

1:20 p.m. --
Partly cloudy day with temps in the mid 70s. Franklin has stuck around to see who it will play tomorrow. The Sabres, who have won four straight one-run games to advance to the state semifinals, are sporting team Mohawk haircuts.



THIRD INNING --
West Salem went down in order for the second straight inning. Marquette pitcher Colin Meyer has now retired seven batters in a row.



Marquette added another run with Mike Monfre hit a lead-off single, moved to second on a sacrifice and third on an infield out before scoring on Ryan McShane's RBI-single to right field.



After three innings: Marquette 7, West Salem 0.



SECOND INNING --
After West Salem was retired in order, Marquette took advantage of four straight walks to take a 6-0 lead. Joe Cannon started the four-run outburst with a one-out double. One out later, Rayn McShane, Nolan Peterson, Ryan Grad and Jack Archie all walked to up Marquette's lead to 4-0. Sam Beres followed with a two-run single to center to chase West Salem starter Dan Schneider.



After two innings: Marquette 6, West Salem 0.



FIRST INNING

Marquette jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Ryan McShane drew a lead-off walk. Nolan Peterson reached on an error on a sacrifice bunt and Jack Archie followed one out later with an RBI single to center. Sam Beres then made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly to right field.



After First inning: Marquette 2, West Salem 0



12:36 p.m. --
Wright got caught in a rundown attempting to steal third and was thrown out and when Tony Schultz tried to advance to second base on the play, he was thrown out attemtpting to steal, too, for West Salem. Marquette pitcher Colin Meyer then struck out Dan Schneider as the Hilltoppers escaped a potentially disastrous first inning.



12:29 p.m. --
First pitch and we are underway. West Salem lead-off hitter Brian Wright reaches first on an infield single to shortstop and Tony Schultz draws a walk. The Panthers have scored in double figures in 17 of their 29 games this season.



Game two of the 45th annual WIAA summer baseball state tournament is 10 minues away from the first pitch with the lineups being announced for West Salem (28-1) and Milwaukee Marquette (19-20) in a quarterfinal matchup at Bukolt Park in Stevens Point.



West Salem
returns to the tournament field for the second straight season and for the fifth time overall. The Panthers advance to the semifinals in 2002, the farthest they have advanced in the tournament. They won the Large Division of the Dairyland Conference and advanced to the State Tournament with a 4-2 win over Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau in the Arcadia Sectional.



Marquette is the defending state champ and returns to the tournament for the fifth consecutive time and seventh overall. The Hilltoppers also won state in 2006, advanced to the semifinals in 2007 and were runner-up in 1999. Marquette won its second title a year ago when it routed Kettle Moraine in the championship game, 12-1. The Hilltoppers scored 10 runs in the seventh inning to break open a tight, 2-1 lead. They finished fourth in the Greater Metro Conference and advanced to state by edging New Berlin Eisenhower 8-7 in 10 innings.

Franklin 2, Homestead 1

SEVENTH INNING --
Franklin pitcher Brandon Wiedenfeld retired Homestead in order in the seventh to send the Sabers to the state semifinals on Thursday morning with a 2-1 victory.



Wiedenfeld retired eight of the last nine batters he faced.



Franklin (25-13) will meet the winner of the next game between West Salem and Marquette, which will begin at about 12:30 p.m.





SIXTH INNING --
Homestead failed to score in the top of the sixth but Franklin grabbed a 2-1 lead. Ian Schiltz doubled to center with one out and moved to third on an infield out by Eric Charbonneau. Ryan Dalton then hit a smash off the glove of Homestead third baseman Matt Laners to score Schiltz and give the Sabers a 2-1 lead.



After six innings: Franklin 2, Homestead 1.



Took a break to get the first hot dog of the day, only $2. Caught up with coach Jim Wilkinson of Marquette. The defending state champions are just 19-20 but on a roll in the playoffs. The Hilltoppers return four starters from their state championship team, including junior pitcher Collin Weyer,  who will face West Salem following this game.



FIFTH INNING --
Homestead got a baserunner to third base after Casey Barnes drew a one-out walk, stole second and moved to third on an infield out. But was left stranded.



Franklin got a two-out double by Jay Dirienzo, who was also left stranded.



After five innings: Homestead 1, Franklin 1.



FOURTH INNING --
Zach Enea lined a one-out double off the left-center field fence but was stranded at third base for Homestead.



11:10 a.m. -- Evan Walton reached on an infield single to open the bottom of the fourth for Franklin. Walton moved to second on a sacrifice and moved to third when Ian Schiltz reached base on an error by second baseman Geoff Hilt.



Eric Charbonneau bounced into a fielder's choice to score Walton and tie the game at 1-1. Ryan Dalton followed with a double into the left field corner to put runners at second and third. But Homestead pitcher Casey Barnes retired Ryan Geil on a fly ball to right field to end the inning.



After four innings: Homestead 1, Franklin 1.



Arrowhead coach Tim O'Driscoll stopped by the say hi. O'Driscoil is also the official scorer for the Milwaukee Brewers. But after working Monday's 14-6 loss to Washington, he took a few days off to bring his team to state. Arrowhead will meet West Bend West in the third quarterfinal game of the day, which is scheduled to start at 3:35 p.m.



10:56 a.m. -- Ryan Geil opened the Franklin third with a single to center and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. He moved to third on an infield single by Lance Baretz. But Homestead pitcher Casey Barnes induced Jay Dirienzo to bounce into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.



After three innings: Homestead 1, Franklin 0.



THIRD INNING --
Casey Barnes just opened the Homestead inning with a solo blast to left center field over the 345 foot sign to give the Highlanders a 1-0 lead. It is Barnes' team-leading sixth home run of the season.



After serving up the homer to Barnes, Franklin pitcher Brandon Wiedenfeld notched his first two strikeouts and retired Joey stoll on a line drive to the second baseman to end the top of the third inning.



10:44 a.m. --
Ryan Dalton delivered a two-out single to center field for Franklin. Kenny Henrichs entered the game as a courtesy runner for Dalton. Pitcher Casey Barnes nearing picked Henrichs off base twice before he attempted to steal second. Homestead catcher Mitch Hauser, though, gunned a throw to second to throw Henrichs out by nearly three feet.



After two innings, Homestead 0, Franklin 0.



SECOND INNING --
Homestead put runners on second and third with one out. Zach Enea reached base on an infield error and moved to second on a sacrifice. Mike Collins was hit by a pitch and both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch.



But the Highlanders failed to score when Geoff Hilt popped up his squeeze bunt attempt and Franklin pitcher Brandon Wiedenfeld made a diving catch before doubling Enea off third base for an inning-ending double play.



10:29 a.m. --
Franklin got back-to-back singles from Lance Baretz and Jay Dirienzo with one out. But Homestead pitcher Casey Barnes retired the next two batters to end the inning.



10:20 a.m. -- After a short delay to attend to Bingham's injury, Kevin Koch entered the game as a courtesy runner for Homestead. Joey Stoll followed with a single to left but Matt Lamers grounded into a fielder's choice to end the Highlanders' at bat.



FIRST INNING --
Homestead is the visiting team and Franklin is the home team in the first game. Franklin pitcher Brandon Wiedenfeld delivered the first pitch -- a strike -- at 10:05 a.m. Wiedenfeld retired the first two batters, Casey Barnes and Andrew Holtorf, on infield outs before hitting No. 3 hitter Brandy Bingham with a pitch.



Bingham took the pitch off his helmet and is being treated for a cut under his left eye.



10:04 a.m. --
We've had the national anthem and the first pitch is moments away. The WIAA honored retiring executive director Doug Chickering, who just threw out a ceremonial first pitch.



[font="verdana"]Franklin is making its second state appearance in the last three years and its seventh overall. The Sabers finished runner-up in 2000. They reached the State Tournament with a 5-4 victory over Oak Creek in the South Milwaukee Sectional final. The Sabers placed third in the Southern Division of the Greater Metro Conference this season.

 

Homestead qualified for the State Tournament for the eighth time overall and for the second time in three years. The Highlanders have won three State titles, capturing the crown in 1974, 1978 and 1994, and they added a runner-up finish in 2003. Homestead finished fifth in the North Shore Conference this year and advanced to state through the Whitefish Bay Sectional with an 8-4 win over host Whitefish Bay.



Welcome--The 45th annual WIAA summer baseball state tournament is 20 minues away from the first pitch with the lineups being announced for Homestead (21-15) and Franklin (24-13) in the first of four Division 1 quarterfinal matchups at Bukolt Park in Stevens Point.
