Summer baseball is running in high gear, and believe it or not the playoffs are just around the corner.  Some sectionals have even had their seeding meetings already.  New Holstein was granted the top seed in the Plymouth Sectional, despite being upset last Thursday by rival Kiel.  The Huskies have now lost two of their last three games, with their lone win during that time coming in a 14-4 run-rule win over Kewaskum.

Speaking of Kewaskum, the Indians suffered another defeat on Friday at the hands of West Bend East (mascot pictured) as Suns pitcher E.J. Sexton struck out 14 in seven innings and also doubled and homered in the game.

West Salem is the last remaining unbeaten team in Summer Baseball, but the Panthers survived quite a scare Thursday night when Matt Luethe's two-out, two-run inside the park home run in the bottom of the seventh inning gave them an 11-10 win over Arcadia.  The second game wasn't quite as close as West Salem won 10-0 behind a strong outing from Jacob McCabe.  Speaking of West Salem, the La Crosse Tribune's Jeff Brown takes a look at their hot start.

Many local newspapers and other media outlets do all-area teams, often accompanied by an area player of the year.  La Crosse Central senior Lucas Warren was tagged as the La Crosse Tribune Baseball Player of the Year.  Kimberly's Brad Schreiber was a two-time state player of the year, so it's natural he was named the Appleton Post-Crescent All-Area Player of the Year.  Eau Claire Memorial's Will Fadness hit over .600 this season on his way to being named Eau Claire Leader-Telegram All-Area Player of the Year.

Bay Port's Sean Grabig (pictured) was recently featured in Dennis Semrau's Dugout Chatter on WSN, and he has also been selected as the Green Bay Press-Gazette All-Area Player of the Year.  Mike Parman of Wausau East was chosen as the Wausau Daily Herald Player of the Year.  Shane Adler from Middleton is just a junior, but the strong-armed right-hander was selected as the Wisconsin State Journal Player of the Year.  In a related story, his teammate Brooks Braga was selected as the WSJ Athlete of the Year.
