Division 2 State Championship Game

Final -- Madison Edgewood 13, Bloomer 3 (6 innings)

4:50 p.m. -- The three Division 2 state games featured scores of 13-0, 12-2 and 13-3 (6 innings). Edgewood (25-4) wins its second state title in three appearances. The Crusaders won the 2004 Division 2 title in its WIAA tournament debut.

Bloomer (27-4) was making its second trip to state and first since 1983. The Blackhawks fell in the semifinals in their only other appearance.

4:48 p.m. -- Edgewood (25-4) wins on the mercy rule (10-run lead after five innings) in six innings after Zach Scherschel lines a one-out single to left field just inside the foul line and out of the reach of left-fielder Zach Borofka to score Tim Longo. Scherschel went 3-for-3 with a walk, three runs scored and two RBI.

Edgewood wins its second WIAA state championship 13-3, over Bloomer.

4:39 p.m. --
Bloomer entered the championship game with an 11-game winning streak and 11 games in which it had scored in double figures. The Blackhawks had allowed more than 10 runs in a game just three times this season.

This is the 11th time that Edgewood has scored 10 runs in a game this season. The Crusaders have allowed more than 10 runs only once.

4:32 p.m. -- As if there is any doubt that Edgewood is in charge, Chris Ritter launches a two-run home run over the left-fielld wall. The blast, estimated at 375 feet, gives Edgewood a 12-3 lead.

Back-to-back four-run innings means Edgewood has now scored 12 runs in back-to-back games.

4:28 p.m. --
Zach Scherschel walks to reach base for the third time after back-to-back singles and that is all for Bloomer pitcher Alex Koehler, who is relieved by second baseman Corey Poirier.

Kyle Haen greets Poirier with a sacrifice bunt attempt, which moves Cosgrove and Scherschel up a base. But when catcher Erik Reischel strays too far from home plate, Cosgrove comes around to score. Mario Minnaert gets his second RBI of the game with a single to center as Madison Edgewood takes a 10-3 lead.

4:24 p.m. -- Cosgrove gets a lead-off single to start the fifth for Edgewood. In two games, the senior designated hitter is only 1-for-2. But he has scored three runs, walked four times, been hit by a pitch and executed one sacrifice.

4;20 p.m. --
Edgewood second baseman Mario Minnaert makes a game-changning play on Zach Borofka's ground ball up the middle. Minnaert is positioned perfectly to cut off the ground ball, step on the bag at second and relay the ball to first for the double play. Corey Poirier bounces out to new third baseman Josh Benesh to retire the side.

4:16 p.m. --
Bloomer junior first baseman Matt Dachel rips a single to left field for his first hit of the game and fifth in two days. He was 4-for-5 in Bloomer's 13-0 win over Lakeside Lutheran in the semifinals.

Edgewood coach Rich Newton comes out of the dugout and says that's it for Curtin. Robert Parman, who started the game at third base, is the Crusaders' new pitcher. Parman will try to bridge the gap to Chris Ritter, who pitched five innings in Edgewood's 12-2 win over Fox Valley Lutheran on Wednesday and still has two innings left to pitch in the tournament.

4:13 p.m. -- Christiaan Webers clears the bases with a double to left-center field to cap a four-run Edgewood inning. The Crusaders now lead Bloomer 8-3.

4:07 p.m. --
Chris Ritter hits an opposite field hit to right field to score Haen for a 6-3 Edgewood lead. Robert Parman reaches base on an error by shortstop Wesley Stuckert. But Nick Hughes is called out on strikes for the second out.

4:04 p.m. --
Edgewood moves ahead 5-3 on Mario Minnaert's sacrifice fly. Zac Scherschel opened the inning with his second hit of the game and moved to third when third baseman Matthew Bohl overthrew first base on Kyle Haen's sacrifice attempt. Minnaert followed with a sacrifice fly for his first RBI of the state tournament. Minnaert is officially 0-for-0 today after being hit by a pitch and recording a sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly.

4:00 p.m. --
Both teams have had three-run innings -- Edgewood in the second and Bloomer in the fourth. Curtin gets Wesley Stuckret to strike out swinging to retire the side.

Edgewood 4, Bloomer 3 (bottom of the fourth)

3:57 p.m. -- Temperatures are in the upper 70s and it's humid.

But Bloomer is even hotter, pulling within 4-3 on Alex Koehler's RBI-single to right field.

4th Inning -- Bloomer, which has scored 59 runs in its last seven games, finally broke through in the top of the fourth inning. The Blackhawks cut their deficit to 4-2 on Josh Schemenauer's double over the head of center fielder Kyle Haen. The ball rolled to the warning track to score Zach Borofka, who had singled to right field to lead off the inning, and Corey Poirier, who had reached on third baseman Robert Parman's error.

Madison Edgewood 4, Bloomer 0 (3 innings)

3:48 p.m. -- Nick Hughes singled to left to open the Edgewood third but was cut down by Bloomer catcher Erik Reischel while attempting to steal second base. After Christiaan Webers flew out to left field, Tim Longo walked and stole second, his team-high sixth of the season.

Connor Cosgrove drew a walk for the second time today and fourth time of the tournament and when the ball bounces off the catcher's shinguard and rolls into the Bloomer dugout, Edgewood appears to have another run.

But Longo, who was on second base, was awarded just one base and sent back to third base by the home plate umpire. Cosgrove was then picked off first base to retire the side.

3:42 p.m. -- Edgewood, which was ranked first in the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association preseason poll, is after its first title since winning the Division 2 championship in 2004. The Crusaders were ranked fourth and Bloomer sixth in the final Division 2 poll of the regular season.

3:39 p.m. -- Bloomer puts two runners on base in the top of the third inning. But the Blackhawks run themselves out of the inning attempting a double steal. Curtin struck out Matt Dachel and Edgewood catcher Nick Hughes threw out Alex Koehler attempting to steal third base to retire the side on a strike 'em out, throw 'em out double play.

Madison Edgewood 4, Bloomer 0 (2 innings)

3:27 p.m. -- Mario Minnaert is hit by a pitch for Edgewood, the fourth time he has been on base in two days. Chris Ritter follows with a walk to load the bases. But Robert Parman is retired on a ground ball to second base to retire the side.

3:24 p.m. -- Zach Scherschel delivers a single to right to score Tim Longo, who scores from second after he collides with catcher Erik Reischel. The throw from Josh Schemenauer gets away and Cosgrove also scores to give Edgewood a 3-0 lead.

Kyle Haen follows with a shot to deep right field that Schemenauer appears to have a bead on. But he looses the ball in the sun for an RBI-double. Edgewood 4, Bloomer 0.

3:22 p.m. --
Edgewood is mounting a two-out rally after Tim Longo singles to center and Connor Cosgrove draws a walk.

3:18 p.m. --
Bloomer puts two runners on base on an error by shortstop Chris Ritter and a walk to Josh Schemenauer. But Curtin gets both Matthew Bohl and Erik Reischel on called third strikes to retire the side for the Blackhawks in the second.

3:15 p.m. -- All of today's championship games will be broadcast on a delayed basis by FSN. Jay Wilson and Bill Brophy are calling the Division 2 championship game for When We Were Young productions. The Division 2 title game will be aired on FSN on July 23 at 7 p.m.

3:12 p.m. -- The wind could be a factor today, blowing out to left field. After the threat of showers this morning, it is partly sunny and humid.

3:08 p.m. -- Kyle Haen drew a lead-off walk for Edgewood, stole second base, moved to third on Mario Minnaert's sacrifice and scored on Chris Ritter's sacrifice fly to center field. Edgewood leads 1-0.

3:07 p.m. --
Both teams were involved in games that got out of hand last night, Bloomer scored five runs in the fourth and six in the seventh to beat Lakeside Lutheran 13-0. Edgewood scored nine runs in the sixth inning and took advantage of 13 walks and six wild pitches to beat Appleton Fox Valley Lutheran 12-2.  The 13 walks tied a Division 2 state tournament record.

3:03 p.m. --
Alex Koehler grounds into a fielder's choice, 3-6, Wesley Stuckert flies out to left field and Matt Dachel grounds out to second base to end the Bloomer first inning.

2:59 p.m. --
Joe Curtin throws a strike and the Division 2 title game is underway. Curtin is making his first start on the mound for Edgewood. He serves up a single to Bloomer lead-off hitter Trevor Morning, who was the Blackhawks starting pitcher last night.

2:45 p.m. -- We're on target for a 3 p.m. start.

Still worried about that 70 percent chance of a thunderstorm today but we're halfway through championship Thursday.
