Midwest Classic Conference foes met for the 3rd time today and Shoreland prevailed with a 6-5 win. Martin Luther scored a run in the 2nd, when freshman shortstop, Miranda Reinke led off the inning with a single and then stole 2nd. Brianna Blundon scorched a ball to left driving her home. A walk and a single by leftfielder, Abbey Land loaded the bases and it looked as if the Spartans were in the middle of a big inning. However, Shoreland junior pitcher, Rochelle Willkomm struck out two, stranding 3 runners. The Pacers answered with a run in the 3rd. Freshman shortstop, Katie Morman drew a one-out walk and Megan Peterson laid down a sacrifice bunt. Morman advanced to 3rd on the play. Sophomore 1st baseman, Kim Gall singled to left to tie it at 1. The Pacers then broke out for 5 runs in the 4th inning. Hits by Brittanny Bahr, Alyssa Bahr, Melissa Luebbers, Katie Morman and sacrifice bunts by Renee Wright and Megan Peterson led to the big inning. The Spartan offense was driving the ball around the field today, but the Pacer defense kept them at bay. 2nd baseman Megan Peterson snared a line drive in the 5th and then threw to 2nd to double off the runner to end the inning. In the 6th, Alyssa Bahr chased down a fly ball to center to end the inning with a runner at 2nd. Martin Luther looked to rally in the 7th. Callie Reinke led off the inning with a walk. Then freshman 2nd baseman Kendall Povlick drove a ball to right center for a triple making it 6-3. Pitcher, Kristen Anhalt drew the 2nd walk of the inning. With runners at the corners, Miranda Reinke hit a bomb that Pacer Park was just able to hold in centerfield. It scored Callie Reinke, but an excellent relay by Alyssa Bahr and Peterson found 2 runners near 3rd base. Peterson threw the ball home for a tag out at the plate to record the 2nd out of the inning. Senior 3rd baseman Katie Leiterman then drilled the ball to center making the score 6-5. The game ended when Pacer shortstop Katie Morman fielded a grounder and stepped on 2nd giving the Pacers their 3rd win of the season over Martin Luther. Shoreland Lutheran advances to the regional final to play the winner of Racine St. Catherine s and Racine Lutheran.

Kimberly 3, Neenah 0

On the mound

Claudia Harke battled a tough strike zone, but was nonetheless dominating on the mound as she pitched a complete-game, one-hit shutout to lead the Kimberly Papermakers to a win over the Neenah Rockets in a WIAA Division 1 regional semifinal Tuesday at Sunset Park.

With the win, Kimberly will take on Kaukauna on Thursday. The Ghosts, the No. 2 seed, swept the Papermakers earlier in the season in a double-header.

Harke struck out 10 and walked two, and allowed just one base runner in scoring position.

· Quick start: The Papermakers hadn't played in a week, so Kimberly coach Bill Weyers felt it was extremely important to come out of the gates fast. His team responded with two first-inning runs.

After Dani Peerenboom walked and stole second, Maggie Wettstein bunted for a base hit and took second on a fielder's choice to put the runners at second and third. Peerenboom scored after a ground out and Wettstein scored on Jenna Whitehead's single.

"We got on them, and I think that set the tone," Weyers said. "We haven't played in a week, so to get those two runs right away was big."

· Big catch: Rosie Wettstein made her coach look good. Weyers inserted Wettstein in left field in the seventh for defensive purposes. Neenah cleanup hitter Stephanie Wheeler laced a bullet to left that, had it gotten by, would have been easily a triple. But Wettstein, a junior, made a diving catch for the first out of the inning. Harke got two of the next three to end the game.

"That was a ridiculous catch," Harke said. "I was about to run out to left field and grab her and give her a hug."

· Going deep: After the first inning, Kimberly's offense struggled, getting just one hit in the next four innings. That all changed when Danielle Pozolinski lined to the right-center field gap all the way to the fence. Pozolinski easily scored on the inside-the-park home run.

Division II:

Defense lifts New London softball team

By Tim Froberg

Post-Crescent staff writer

NEW LONDON — New London, the top-rated softball squad in the Wisconsin Fastpitch Chronicle's state poll, launched its WIAA postseason play without any hiccups.

The Bulldogs breezed to a 7-1 regional semifinal win over Little Chute on Tuesday.

The Bulldogs fattened a .300-plus batting average with 10 hits, but their noisy bats aren't what make them so formidable. It's the clean, efficient way they play defense and avoid mistakes, whether it's in the field or on the mound.

New London coach Tony Porath has posted a 61-9 overall record the past three years and coached a succession of quality teams since taking over the program in 1995. He thinks the 2007 Bulldogs may be the best of the bunch defensively.

"Sometimes, they'll come in from the field after making a few nice plays and I'll say, 'Man, it's fun watching you guys play,' " Porath said.

The Bulldogs did have an error Tuesday, but it was an aggressive one: a throwing miscue in an attempt to pick off a straying runner.

Their infield of slick-fielding third baseman Andrea Flease, rifle-armed shortstop Brittany Beyer, second baseman Christina Moore and first baseman Brooke Sampone might want to consider calling themselves "The Wall" because it's tough getting anything past them.

Flease made a tough play look easy in the sixth, backhanding a grounder and making an off-balance flip to shortstop Beyer covering the third-base bag for a key force out.

A swift, rangy New London outfield and an elite catcher in Melinda Wulf are other components to a Bulldogs defense that shortens games for mound ace Jessica Ferge by working diligently to not let the ball hit the ground.

"Whenever the ball is hit, I'm thinking we have a good chance of making a play," said Ferge.

Prep softball regional roundup: Defensive lapse derails Plymouth

North, Oostburg, Elkhart Lake advance to finals

Sheboygan Press staff

The Plymouth softball team was just one out away from advancing to a WIAA Division 2 regional final when the wheels came off.

Two fielding errors led to three unearned runs and the host Panthers were stunned by Winnebago Lutheran, 3-2, in a regional semifinal Tuesday.

Plymouth, the No. 2 seed and WIAA state runner-up a year ago, ended the season at 17-3, while Lutheran improved to 14-7.

First impressions mean nothing to Lourdes softball team ,Knights move on to regional finals with win over Gibraltar

BY BRETT KRZYKOWSKI

of The Northwestern

The first inning is supposed to be a harbinger of things to come. A hit here or there, a couple of runs, and suddenly an offense has all the confidence it needs after setting the tone early. Unless the other team decides to change its tune.

The Oshkosh Lourdes softball team hit about as many sour notes as a squad can in the top of the opening frame at Tuesday s WIAA Division 4 regional semifinal and fell behind visiting Gibraltar 2-0. But the rest of the game was a masterpiece for the host Knights, who moved on to the regional final with a 12-3 win.

"I told the girls after the game that I thought everyone did an excellent job playing their role," Lourdes head coach Matt Hintz said. "We have some girls who do an excellent job bunting for us, some who run the bases great, some who hit the ball hard.

"We take advantage of each of those things the best we can, and I thought everyone executed very well today."

With the exception of the first inning anyway.

After being away from live action for 10 days, Lourdes starting pitcher Brittany Wolff looked like she had a few cobwebs to dust off and hit a pair of batters in the opening frame, and then committed one of the defense s two errors as the Vikings pushed across the game s first two runs without the aid of a hit.

But Wolff was nearly perfect the rest of the way, and the defense playing behind her had plenty to do with that, committing only one more error while their hurler surrendered a lone hit over the final six innings.

"(Brittany) was a little rattled early, and I don t know if it was nerves or what," Hintz said. "Part of it was having so much time off. She threw some side sessions, but obviously that s not game situations. For us to have 10 days off and then ask her to come back and be as sharp as she has been would be asking a lot.

"But it was a good sign seeing her come back the way she did. Her mental toughness was outstanding, which shows she s growing up a little bit. She battled through and picked us up the rest of the way."

The offense wasn t too shabby either, beginning with a first-inning rally that turned a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 lead, the last two runs of which came around to score on a Jessica Baehmann single.

The Knights spent the rest of the game proving that initial frame was no fluke and notched at least one run in every inning except the second, although the approach was somewhat piecemeal until their final at-bat.

After ticking off a run here and a run there the entire way, Katrina Brzezewski came to the plate with Lourdes already holding a 9-3 lead and promptly deposited a bomb over the head of Gibraltar s center fielder for a triple that plated the final two runs of an outstanding offensive performance for a team that s had plenty of them this season.

"This keeps our confidence up, that s for sure," Hintz said. "The girls have done an outstanding job of hitting and adjusting week in and week out. They ve consistently improved from day one, which is all you can ask. A handful of girls were struggling a little bit earlier, but they ve really come around.

"We work hard on it, and we re an aggressive team. We re not going to change that just because we re in the playoffs."

Princeton 8, Randolph 7

It didn t take long for Princeton to take the lead during its WIAA Division 4 regional semifinal game against visiting Randolph or to get it back once that lead was gone. But first the host Tigers had to survive a spirited rally by the Rockets.

Princeton exploded for five runs in the opening frame but struggled to keep that lead intact as Randolph methodically chipped away before taking a 7-6 lead in the top of the fourth.

"We started quick and then kind of relaxed and didn t really get it going," Princeton head coach Harlan Leusink said. "But I m pleased everyone held together. Once they got ahead, we stayed steady and got a couple of runs."

After the Rockets pulled ahead in the fourth, the Tigers evened things up in the bottom of the frame, and then retook the lead when Katie Doro scored from second while teammate Abby Pulvermacher occupied the defense in a rundown.

Last year, St. Catherine s defeated Shoreland 1-0 in the Regional Semi-finals and this year s game was expected to be another thriller. The players from the two teams did not disappoint as they locked horns in an epic fastpitch softball game in which Racine St. Catherine s came out on top with a 2-1 victory in 11 innings over Shoreland Lutheran. The Angels struck 1st when Karen Kasinski drew a 2-out walk in the 3rd. Catcher Lauren Roszkowski followed with a single to the left-centerfield gap which allowed Kasinski to score as she was running on the pitch. Senior, St. Cat s pitcher, Karen Kasinski used an array of pitches early to keep the Pacer batters off balance. Through 6 innings, she had recorded 13 strikeouts and given up only 2 hits. Shoreland was finally able to string a couple hits together in the top of the 7th to get on the board. Sophomore catcher, Brittanny Bahr led off the inning with a single. Then with 1 out, her sister, senior centerfielder, Alyssa Bahr also singled putting runners on 1st and 2nd. Sophomore DP, Melissa Luebbers shot a single up the middle allowing Brittanny to score without a play, because Kasinski cut the ball off to get Alyssa Bahr advancing to 3rd. The Pacers looked to score with runners in scoring position in both the 9th & 10th, but Kasinski was able to pitch out of each situation. St. Catherine s took advantage of the 1st 2 Shoreland errors in the game in the bottom of the 11th. With 2 outs, errors allowed both Roszkowski and Kayla McClure to reach safely. Then with runners on 1st and 2nd, Becky Staples hit a 2-out full count pitch down the right field line. The ball landed and chalk flew as it landed on the line and Roszkowski was able to beat the throw by a step. Kasinski finished with 17 strikeouts to 2 walks. Shoreland junior pitcher, Rochelle Willkomm also hurled a fine game with 7 strikeouts and 2 walks. Willkomm also had 11 assists on weak grounders back to the circle. St. Catherine s advances to the Waterloo sectional and will play Deerfield.

Foxes hit #1 ranked New London with knockout punch, 10-0 in five innings

By Tim Froberg

Post-Crescent Staff writer

NEW LONDON — It was hard to tell what was dropping faster Thursday at Memorial Park — Fox Valley Lutheran hits, raindrops or the jaws of some stunned softball fans.

A young and talented Foxes team stormed into the soggy home of the state's No. 1-ranked Division 2 team and took the Bulldogs apart. When it was over two innings earlier than scheduled, the Foxes were hoisting a Division 2 regional championship plaque following a shocking 10-0 five-inning win.

The FVL win wasn't a total surprise, since the Foxes are a fine 20-3 club that won the Valley 8 Conference and tied with Denmark for ninth in the final state poll. The shocker was the way they took out the favored Bulldogs in five innings.

The Foxes came out swinging and turned into a SWAT team, mashing the ball like the game they were playing was slow-pitch softball.

FVL is one of the valley's youngest teams, starting five sophomores and a freshman. Teams this youthful aren't supposed to hammer a senior-dominated opponent that many had penciled in as a state qualifier. FVL pitcher and team leader Steffani Stoeger entered the game wondering if this would be the finale of her stellar high school sports career. And when she looked into the eyes of her teammates following pregame warm-ups, she didn't like what she saw.

So, she gave a little pep talk.

"I was a little scared because after we came in from warm-ups the girls looked a little intimidated," Stoeger said. "I said, 'I don't care what you're thinking right now, but drop it and believe in yourselves and have confidence in this team, because we can do it.' This team is capable of so much."

Stoeger might want to consider a future as a motivational speaker if she keeps getting these type of results. The Foxes drilled 11 hits, including four extra-base hits, off New London ace Jessica Ferge, who entered the game with an 18-2 record and an ERA below 1.00.

For FVL's only two senior starters, Stoeger and centerfielder Jamie Matz, the lopsided win was especially sweet because New London has been such a nemesis, eliminating the Foxes in regional play the past two postseasons.

"I'm almost speechless," a beaming Matz said. "They've kicked us out of the playoffs the past two years. I wasn't going to let that happen again, if I had any say in it."

The Foxes knew they were underdogs entering the game, and used it to their advantage.

"We've been under the radar — nobody has talked to us all year," said FVL coach Steve Lecher. "Even when we won conference, people kind of looked at us like: 'You guys lucked out.' We wanted to prove we're for real. We felt that we had to get them down, because there's a lot of pressure on them being ranked No. 1."

Green Bay West hopes again end in Pulaski

By Scott Venci

svenci@greenbaypressgazette.com

PULASKI — Call it Bob LeCaptain's personal house of horrors.

The longtime softball coach always talks about staying positive and never giving up, but it would be difficult to blame him for not wanting to play Pulaski in the postseason anymore.

The Red Raiders (16-6) eliminated the Wildcats in a regional final for the third straight season — and the second time on the Raiders' home turf — on Thursday afternoon, this time with a thrilling 7-6 win that ended on a bases-loaded wild pitch.

"It was back and forth all game," Pulaski coach Billi Jo Vertz said. "Our girls are fighters, and they played with heart tonight."

Indeed, each time the Red Raiders found themselves down, they fought back.

West pushed across two runs in the top of the first, only to watch Pulaski tie the score in the bottom half of the inning with the help of two errors.

The Red Raiders appeared to break the game open in the third, when outfielder Kendra Bliese led off the inning with a rocket home run to left off West pitcher Melissa Glenzer.

The junior right-hander followed by hitting two consecutive batters and serving up a two-run double to Jamie Adamski before being relieved by senior Rebecca Mann.

Pulaski's 5-2 lead lasted until the top of the sixth, when the Wildcats scored four runs — the last two coming with the bases loaded and two outs when pitcher Jessica Kropp opted to go for a force at home but threw wild — to take a 6-5 lead.

"We don't ever quit," LeCaptain said. "We don't ever think we are going to lose."

Pulaski again responded in its half, scoring one run to tie the score but squandering a chance to take the lead after running into a double play on a flyout to center in which one of the Red Raiders tagged too soon.

It didn't matter.

West committed two errors to start the bottom of the seventh, before Mann's pitch went to the fence two batters later to send home courtesy runner Erin Treankler with the winning run.

A West team that won the Fox River Valley Conference title this season in part because of its defense, committed six of the 10 errors in the game with both teams battling gusty winds and on-again, off-again rain.

"I think the nerves got them," LeCaptain said of his team. "They wanted it so bad, because they thought they had a chance to do something special."

This Pulaski team has its own demons to conquer. The Red Raiders have been knocking on the door to state the last two seasons, only to come up short both times.

The Mayville Cardinal softball team saw their successful season come to a close on Friday night at Ziegler Park, falling to the Portage Warriors 4-1 in the regional final. In a game that began on Thursday, but was suspended due to rain and finished on Friday, the Warriors got three early runs and were able to hold off the Cardinal offense. Portage opened the game with a leadoff single by Jen Krueger, who stole second and moved to third on Ashton Cleveland s sac bunt. Alyssa Leystra struck out the second out of the inning, and Abbie Mueller snagged a liner to end the Warrior first. Portage got on the board three times in the second. After a one-out infield error put Paige Caulum on first, Renee Wilson s two-out base hit allowed Caulum to beat Keshia Muche s throw to the plate to start the scoring. Krueger followed with a hit-by-pitch to put runners on first and second. Chelsa Bednarek laced a two-out, two-RBI double to score both baserunners. The Cardinals answered right back when Abbie Mueller started the home half of the second with a triple to deep left. Ariel Wald singled to bring in Mueller and bring the score to 3-1. In the Portage half of the fourth, Renee Wilson drew a one out walk. Play was postponed for nearly one hour as the rains came down. With a break in the rain, the field were readied for play, only to have hard rain begin again after just two pitches. With a 2-1 count and a runner on first with one out, play was suspended until Friday. When play resumed, Jen Krueger took the first pitch deep in the gap in right center for a home run. On the play, the lead runner, Wilson, failed to touch home plate and was called out on the play. Portage now led 4-1. Mayville managed to put runners on in each of the last three innings, but could not manage to narrow the margin. The Cardinals end their season at 18-4 overall, with a share of the conference championship. Congratulations to all of the players on a truly outstanding season.

Pacelli eliminates rival Rosholt

ROSHOLT-- The objective had been set since before the season. After two years of playing in Rosholt's shadow, Pacelli softball wanted the Hornets in the playoffs, and wanted to beat them. The chance came Friday and Pacelli took care of business, sending the No. 5 team in Division 3 home, as the Cardinals' picked up a 2-0 victory in a regional final. The Cardinals (20-2) now move on to sectionals next Thursday, which will be held at Zenoff Park. Pacelli takes on Crivitz, with the winner to meet either Laconia or Sevastopol in the sectional final. Pacelli, ranked seventh, had made Rosholt a target and the Hornets sent those same feelings back. A rivalry of respect has long existed between these two teams, which have played with and against each other for years prior to high school. The past two years, Rosholt has had the upper hand winning the Central Wisconsin Conference Large Division, which the Hornets moved out of for this season. "They're the only team that beat us in the conference last year, this was big," Pacelli coach Ann Molski said. "The girls circled this date. It's always a battle when we get together here." On this day they met as champions of the small and large divisions, in what was essentially the overall CWC championship. Both teams rose to the occasion, making crucial stops behind their well-composed pitchers, Jordan Olds of Pacelli and Anna Zdroik of Rosholt. Olds was especially masterful, striking out nine and never allowing more than one baserunner on in an inning. "Jordan Olds finally got her due, she's never got enough credit,"
