Poynette clinched the outright Capitol North title at Columbus with the 2-1 victory. The Indians lost their first two conference games of the season including a 16-2 shellacking at the hands of Columbus but battled back to win out and get the outright title.

Kristi Wasserburger walked to lead off the game, stole second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Elyse Rylander. Madeline Dugolenski was then hit by a pitch and stole second. Ali Reigstad then hit a ball just inside the left field foul line that was dropped. It would have scored Wasserburger anyway and Reigstad was credited with an RBI on the sacrifice fly. Wasserburger walked again to lead off the third, stole second and scored on a double off the fence by Reigstad. The Cardinals scored their run in the bottom of the fourth when Rachael Bublitz reached on a error at shortstop. A bunt play was muffed by the Indians which put runners on second and third and when a walk was issued the sacks were loaded. Carmelia Wilson, Poynette's pitcher coaxed a hard comebacker that she threw to Dugolenski at home. The catcher rifled the ball to first for the double play and when the Venden kept running for home it looked like Poynette might get out of the jam with a triple play. Reigstad, however, at first base lost control of the ball when she tried to get a grip on it to throw to the plate and Venden scored. Columbus threatened again in the sixth but an inning-ending double play on a fly ball to right field and throw to first by Shannon Saager ended the first and second base threat. The winning pitcher was Wilson. "No in my wildest dreams did I think we'd be in this spot right now," said Poynette coach Bob Tomlinson. "We've been like a roller coaster all year. After having 21 total errors in the three previous games where we allowed 25 unearned runs the girls told me it would get better. Tonight they even made me believe them." Poynette finished at 6-2 in the Capitol North and is 11-9 overall.

Stranded: Freedom left three batters on base, but none hurt more than in the second inning. With an 0-2 count, Nicole Geurts smashed a rocket to right-center field for the triple. Freedom, however, was unable to bring home the run. Great fit: Lisa Schommer, who has played third base for Little Chute for the last five games, played remarkably well in turning a double play

in the fifth inning that ended a potential scoring rally from Freedom. "I love (third base)," she said. "I feel so comfortable, because I can trust the rest of my team." Pitchers' duel: Ashley Schider and Jamie Schuh combined to strike out

16 and allowed four hits. Neither pitcher allowed a base runner past third base after the second inning. "She's an awesome pitcher, especially for a freshman," Schider said of Schuh. Revenge: The last time the Mustangs were seeded fourth was in 2005.

That same year, their second round opponent was No. 1-seeded New London, and the Bulldogs won 4-2. Little Chute gets a shot at revenge Tuesday at 4:30 at Memorial Park in New London.

Vikings chop down Chilton to advance

The Reporter Staff

The Winnebago Lutheran softball team played well-rounded ball en route to a 10-3 WIAA Division 2 regional victory Thursday over Chilton. The Vikings started off fast, pounding the Tigers for seven runs in the first three innings. "Right away in the first inning our catcher Alysha Schroeder led off with a double and Leah Jones singled," said WLA coach Riley Westphal. "Steph Kramer doubled them both home. The girls were patient, they waited for the pitchers to throw strikes. When the strikes were there, they hit them." Vikings freshman Karen Woldt, the designated player, whacked a triple and hit an in-the-park home run that rolled down the left-field line. "It was fair by about 2 inches," Westphal said. WLA's offense wasn't the only thing rolling, the defense played well, including centerfielder Steph Kramer who had four putouts. "The main thing was, (Chilton) only had two strikeouts," Westphal said. "Our girls did a nice job of making the plays." That put pressure on the Tigers, who committed four errors in the game. "We made them make the plays," Westphal said. "When you do that you usually have a pretty good

chance to win." The Vikings move on to play Plymouth for the fourth consecutive year in the regionals. WLA lost to the Panthers, 2-1, in a 10 inning regional final a year ago. "They still have their pitcher Lindsay Grahn," Westphal said. "She's a good one. They went on to finish second in state." Kramer finished the game 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, Leah Jones had two hits, including a double, and Kyla Pieper had two hits and a triple for the Vikings. Emily Muche picked up the win, going seven innings, striking out two, walking six and giving up four hits and three earned runs.

Waupun 12, Lodi 2 (5): The Warriors got big days from their seniors in an easy win at home. Senior shortstop Brittany Schleicher led the way, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Chelsea Redeker had a double and two RBIs and

Kirsten Flier knocked in two for the Warriors. "I thought the three seniors, spearheaded by Britty Schleicher had big games," said Waupun coach Thomas Hagstrom. Waupun advances to pay at Portage on Tuesday. Portage is the No. 2 seed in the regional and had a bye in the first round. Lodi finishes at 3-16, while Waupun improves to 15-6. Ariel Griffis pitched for the victory, going five innings to allow four hits, while striking out five.

Early pair lifts Lions over Springs

The Reporter Staff

Lomira's softball team scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning Thursday and that's all the Lions needed to win a Division 3 regional opener against visiting Springs. Lomira advances to play Oakfield on Tuesday. The Oaks were 9-0 winners over North Fond du Lac on Thursday. The Lions got singles from Emily Beck and Casey Maeder in the first inning and an error scored Beck for the first run. Brenda Schwemer got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in the other run.

Maeder had two hits to pace Lomira, but the Lions only got three hits off Springs' Rebecca Newton. Newton walked only one and struck out four to take a tough-luck loss. "I thought we played fairly well on the defensive side, pitching and fielding," said Lomira coach Jacob Fakes. Kelsey Sterr threw for the complete-game victory and allowed only four Springs' hits. Courtney Gutreuter had two of those hits. "Kelsey Sterr did a nice job of changing up the speed," said Springs coach Tom Walentoski. "We only had four hits. From the second inning on we played flawless ball,"

Oakfield 9, North Fondy 0:

Cherise Waltz pitched for her fourth no-hitter of the season as Oakfield rolled at home. Waltz's perfect game chance went away with an Oakfield error in the first inning, but she was superb. She struck out seven and walked none. "Our defense played pretty well tonight," said Oakfield coach Doug Mock. "Offensively, we were disappointed, but we'll move on, hopefully." Oakfield will host Lomira on Tuesday. The Lions beat Springs, 2-0. The Oaks (18-1) got a run in the first and that's all they'd need. Nichole Nelson got a hit and scored on the first of two triples by Kourtney Haller. Haller knocked in two runs and Emily Winget's triple was the only other Oakfield hitting highlight. "She deposited just a couple bombs to right center," Mock said about Haller's shots.

Laconia 13, Tri-County 3 (6):

The Spartans led 3-2 going into the fourth inning, but opened up the lead in the bottom half of that inning with six runs. Laconia advances to face Weyauwega-Fremont on Tuesday. The Indians defeated Wild Rose, 4-3. After two walks in the fourth, Kaitlyn Schmidt singled for an RBI, followed by Ashley Scheberl's RBI single. Melissa Bradley later highlighted the inning with a three-run home run. "We just about batted all the way around," said Laconia coach Scott Ritzema. "We got nine batters up in the fourth." Kristyn Schmidt led the Spartans, going 4-for-4 with a triple. Scheberl was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Laura Eubanks and Bradley both added two hits. "The girls started out slow, but they came back and once we go the ball rolling we

played the rest of the game extremely well," Ritzema said. Scheberl picked up the victory in the pitcher's circle, going six inning to allow eight hits and no walks. She struck out nine.

Markesan 4, Shiocton 3: All the host Hornets needed was the bottom of the fourth inning and Emily Hein's pinpoint accuracy. Markesan scored four runs in the fourth inning and Hein pitched for the victory as Markesan moved on to face St. Mary Central in Menasha on Tuesday. In the Markesan (13-7) fourth, three walks loaded the bases. Kala Jochem grounded out for the first Markesan run. Kristina Krueger doubled in two and later scored on an error. "It was a great comeback win. I'm so happy for Kristina, she had a big hit and Emily Hein pitched a great game. She throws strikes and makes them put it in play and there's a lot to be said for that."

Strong start lifts Lancers

By Steve Clark

Herald Times Reporter

MANITOWOC — Don Menges issued a challenge to his Manitowoc Lutheran softball team before Thursday's WIAA Division 3 regional tournament game at Westfield Softball Park. The Lancers haven't gotten off to the best starts in games this year, and facing rival Mishicot, Menges didn't want his team to have to play from behind against a talented Indians' squad. "I told them it was up to them to come out and play ball right from the start," the Lutheran head coach said. "Obviously they did." The Lancers (14-4 overall) racked up six consecutive hits in the first inning and plated a season-best six runs in their first at bat en route to posting a 12-0 five-inning win over the Indians to advance to face top-seeded Algoma in a regional semifinal on Tuesday. "We haven't started out too

well all year, and Coach told us to come out and be strong," said junior Amber Liermann, who went 3-for-3 and drove in four runs. "We just came out and did it. We really wanted to show him that we could." Liermann's

triple scored Linsey Rogala — who reached on a Mishicot err or — with one out in the first inning, and it opened the offensive floodgates for the Lancers. Elise Anderson followed with a single to score Liermann, while back-to-back base hits from Becky Reichardt and Nicole Loberger plated Anderson, before Brooke Schramm followed with a two-run single. "Once we get going, we don't stop," Schramm said. "We went into this with everybody really pumped up and that really helped." Kim Umnus followed with a single and later scored on Steph Kasten's base hit as each member of the Lutheran batting order reached base in the inning. "There hasn't been too many games that we've scored at all in the first inning so this was unbelievable," Menges said. "In that first inning, we just hit the ball. They were line drives, and wherever we hit it, we hit hard. They came out and met the challenge." Liermann doubled and scored on a Mishicot error in the second inning, before Lutheran tacked on four more runs in the third. Umnus, who started the inning with a single, scored on an Indians' throwing error, while Liermann smacked her second triple of the game with the bases loaded, plating three runs. "It was better than Tuesday (against St. Mary Central), that's for sure," Liermann said of her hitting. "I told myself I could do it and I just went up there and did my thing. My coaches worked with me so I can't take all of the credit." ishicot head coach Larry Feest was impressed by Lancers' offensive performance, but also was disappointed in his team's uncharacteristic miscues that helped feed Lutheran's rallies. "We had some errors today," Feest said. "Not to take anything away from them

because they hit the ball, but we just had too many errors and you can't give a team like this more baserunners." Amanda Engelbrecht added an RBI-single in the fourth to cap the 12-run output for Lutheran, which was more than enough offense for Schramm. The junior hurler — who Menges said was battling a bad cold — allowed only one baserunner in the first four innings before losing her no-hitter in the fifth inning. She also walked one and struck out four in finishing off the win. "I don't think anybody expected this," said Schramm, who surrendered an

infield single to Aarika Schwerma with two outs in the fifth to lose the no-hitter. "Definitely it gives me confidence (when we score early runs) because that puts less pressure on me. It doesn't really matter if the other team scores because I know that we're already up." Notes: Schramm, Umnus and Engelbrecht each finished with two hits in the game for the Lancers, who finished with 13 hits in the game. ... Rogala was the only Lutheran player not to register a hit, but she reached base in two of her three plate appearances. ... Ashlee Skarda started for Mishicot and took the loss, allowing 11 hits and 11 runs (seven earned), while walking one and striking out two in 2 1/3 innings. ... The Lancers beat the Indians three times this season.

KIEL — New Holstein scored three runs in the top of the seventh to break a 3-3 tie, but Kiel came back with four in the bottom of the inning to collect the tournament win. Kristen Wieck drove in the winning run, scoring Becky Schneider from third with a grounder to short. New Holstein's Sarah Kutz was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Winning pitcher Rachel Matthes struck out seven in the complete-game effort. Kiel plays top-seeded Campbellsport Tuesday afternoon in a regional semifinal.

Pittsville rolls in opener

By Jake Miller

Marshfield News-Herald

Jmiller2@Gannett.com

Pittsville is dialed in on its target. Disposing of Auburndale 18-3 in the Division 3 regional quarterfinals, the Panthers have their eyes set on reaching the regional finals, and hopefully Stratford. "We've been under the gun all year and I told the girls it's a new challenge (in the postseason)," said Pittsville coach Dan Hoffa. "We want to get back to (Stratford) and take two out of three from them." With Auburndale (2-18) out of the way, the Panthers, who

earned a share of the Marawood Conference South Division title after beating Stratford on Monday, will face Spencer in a regional semifinal next Tuesday. Pittsville, which led the Marawood Conference South Division in hitting during the regular season, had already beaten Auburndale twice and picked it up at the plate once again. Auburndale's Jenna Richardson suffered the loss, pitching 21/3 innings, while walking six, including the first three batters of the game. Taking advantage of shaky pitching, Pittsville pounced in the first two innings, scoring

four runs in the first and 10 in the second. Hoffa wanted to make sure his girls came out with the same focus they had in the win against Stratford. "They didn't come out flat at all," Hoffa said. "We needed to jump on them and jump on them early." Every player in the lineup reached base and scored before the side was retired in the destructive second. Taylor Wilke, Pittsville's leadoff hitter, had a double and a triple in the second, and scored three runs during the first two innings. The loss brought Auburndale's two-win season to an end, but coach Elizabeth Nagel said the team entered the game with an up-beat attitude, similar to the one that has made the group so coachable throughout the season. "With these guys it was really easy," Nagel said. "They're just a super bubbly team. They never hang their heads after losses." Pittsville's ace, Brittany Zieher, left the game after pitching three innings in which she struck out four, and didn't allow a run or walk. Zieher, who's part of

Pittsville's potent offense, said she is always relaxed in the circle because she's confident the Panthers are going to put up runs. "It feels really good to have such a good offense because even if they (Auburndale) can score three runs, we can still get the win," Zieher said. Pouring on the hits, Pittsville tallied 15 in four innings. Mackenzie Hautala, Mindy Stellmach and Kaitlyn Minor all had two hits, while Stacy Halama led the team with three hits and three RBI.

Colby lets one slip away against Spencer

By Steve Pilz

For the Marshfield News-Herald

SPENCER -- The Spencer Rockets scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out an 11-10 victory over Colby in a Division 3 regional softball game Thursday. Spencer's Deanna Szybowicz led off the bottom of the seventh with a single to left field with the Rockets trailing 10-9. The next batter, Megan Cain, laid down a sacrifice bunt that turned into a hit after hugging the third-base line and stopping. Colby's catcher could not make a play. The runners moved to second and third on a wild pitch. Lindsey Ott struck out, but the ball got away from the catcher as Szybowicz scored from third. When the catcher threw to first the ball got away from the first baseman. Cain rounded third and then hit another gear as she slid under the catcher's tag for a

Rockets win. "It felt good. No. It felt awesome,"said Cain. "I started at second, and then the strikeout. They threw to first and Deanna went home, and then the overthrow. I ran home and slid into a bat and some people, and scored the winning run." Spencer was cruising along the entire game, while scoring every inning. Rockets starter Taylor Johnson even had a no hitter into the fourth inning, but Colby chipped away at the lead with a pair or runs in the fifth to make it 7-2. The Hornets proceeded to put up eight runs on seven hits in the sixth inning to take the lead. Janessa Schmitt hit a three-run homer and shortstop Lizzie Makovec's two-run single keyed the rally. The Rockets got a run in the sixth before coming from behind in the dramatic seventh. "We're a very young team," said Colby coach Adam Vaughn. "It was tough to lose in the last inning with a one run lead. We showed a lot tonight and we hit well." "We decided it was better to have a lucky win than a b really hit the ball well and could've easily won." Colby's Lizzi Makovec went 3 for 4 at the plate with two RBI. Spencer was led by Whitley Phillips, Kiki Phillips and Deanna Szybowicz, each of whom had two hits.

SPASH takes care of West

By Jacey Zembal

Journal Staff

jzembal@wdhprint.com

WAUSAU -- Brittany Lang supplied the power and Stacy Tuskowski took care of the pitching as the Stevens Point Area Senior High softball team won its 36th straight Wisconsin Valley Conference game. The Panthers closed out the regular season undefeated with a 6-1 victory over Wausau West on Thursday behind two home runs from Lang, who is headed to Minnesota State, and a one-hitter by Tuskowski.

Lang's first home run was the Panthers' first hit of the game against West ace Eryn Edgerton in the third inning. The second home run, a prodigious blast to left field, helped open the flood gates in SPASH's five-run seventh inning.

"She (Edgerton) supplies all the power and is a really good pitcher," said Lang, who has five home runs on the season. "I just had to get the bat on the ball. It means a lot when it is actually happens in a tough game. We wanted to go into the playoffs hitting well and fielding well."

Tuskowski carried a no-hitter of her own into the fifth, but West's Kelcie Wittman broke it up in a big way, hitting a homer to center field to tie the game 1-1.

"I knew I had to buckle down right after that homer," Tuskowski said. "I had to hit my corners. I was thinking about a no-hitter right up until she hit that bomb. It bothered me at first, but I knew I had to hit my spots."

Megan Cherney delivered the final blow in the seventh with a two-run single as the game got away from the Warriors. West had a walk, an error and a wild pitch to aid SPASH's uprising. "We held our own for a while," Edgerton said. "A team is going to do

that to you (when you make mistakes). We'll be ready for next Thursday."It was Wittman's third homer of the year and second against SPASH. "I thought the center fielder was going to catch it, so I was about to get really mad," Wittman said. "Then I saw that it went over and was really surprised. SPASH is a great team and are undefeated for a reason and No. 1 in the state."

SPASH hosts the winner of Hortonville/Wisconsin Rapids next Thursday in the WIAA Division 1 regional. "Our focus was to come in and look at this as a playoff game," SPASH coach Tom Drohner said. "Brittany Lang put us on her back today and that

second home run was an absolute bomb."

Koch perfect in Case clincher

5/19/07

Journal Times staff

There's getting to be a shortage of adjectives when it comes to describing Alissa Koch.

The junior pitcher for the Case High School softball team pitched a perfect game Friday afternoon in the Eagles' 6-0 Southeast Conference victory over Oak Creek at Oak Creek. And Koch's first career perfect game and fourth no-hitter of the season was no fluke considering Oak Creek has long been a traditional SEC power.

Koch, who recently announced she will sign with the University of Minnesota this fall, struck out 17 - one short of matching her season high - in improving to 18-1. The victory allowed Case (18-1 overall, 11-0 SEC) to clinch its first outright SEC championship.

"The numbers don't lie," Case coach Damon Jackson said. "Hands down, she's one of the best in the state. You'd be hard-pressed to find a pitcher who's put up the numbers she put up."

With catcher Katie Fliess calling a strong game, Jackson said, "Alissa threw a lot of curveballs and screwballs and changeups. Every pitch was working today."

Koch helped her own cause by pouncing on a bunt in the sixth inning, fielding it barehanded and throwing out the runner at first. Only two batters worked the count to full and Koch struck one out looking and the other swinging.

She also received strong support from teammates, especially Amanda Bartel, who went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and Alyssa Celeste, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
