Aquinas Victory sets up MVC showdown today with Holmen

By the Tribune staff

Senior Caitlin Fitzpatrick pitched a six-hit shutout and scored the only two runs of the game to lead the Aquinas High School softball team to a 2-0 victory over Sparta on Thursday at Pammel Creek fields. The Blugolds victory was their 10th straight and moved them into a first-place tie with Holmen in the MVC. The teams play each other to break that tie at 4:30 p.m. today at Pammel Creek.Aquinas last loss was a 1-0, 11-inning decision at Holmen on April 19. "You always hope you have the opportunity to play for a conference title and now we do," Blugolds coach Kevin Schreiner said. "Holmen s a great team and they ve also had a great season."Fitzpatrick gave the Blugolds (15-3, 8-2) a 1-0 lead in the first inning when she hit a triple and scored on a wild pitch. She hit a solo home run, her third in as many games, in the fourth. Sparta (4-12, 2-9) had a chance to spoil Fitzpatrick s shutout in the first inning after a leadoff double, but with runners on second and third and one out, Fitzpatrick fired back-to-back strikeouts. "Pitching and defense has put us in this position and now we re hitting the ball better," Schreiner said.

Softball roundup: Laconia beats Horicon, helps Mayville

The Reporter Staff

The Laconia softball team helped Mayville in the Wisconsin Flyway final standings.

The Spartans defeated Horicon, 3-2, on Thursday in Rosendale to lift the Cardinals into a tie for the conference title with the Marshmen.

"This is the biggest win we've had since I've been coaching softball," said Laconia coach Scott Ritzema. "This was a great way to end conference play."

Horicon (13-6, 10-2) struck for a pair of runs in the top of the first. Abby Smit got a run back for the Spartans (10-6, 6-6) with an RBI in the bottom of the second, but Laconia scored a pair of runs in the third and those would hold up for the victory.

After Horicon's Chelsie Held struck out two batters in the third, Kristyn Schmidt ripped a triple to left field. Kaitlyn Schmidt knocked in Kristyn by beating out a grounder to shortstop, then winning pitcher Ashley Scheberl crushed a triple to score Kaitlyn Schmidt with what proved to be the winning run.

"She just sat on one and sent it into right field," Ritzema said.

Scheberl got the victory, allowing five hits, with no walks and one strikeout.

"The girls played excellent defense and Ashley was hitting her spots tonight. We got a lot of pop outs and ground outs in the infield."

Lomira 6, North Fondy 0:

A second-inning double by North Fondy was all the Orioles could muster against Lomira's Kelsey Sterr. Sterr walked three and struck out 12 in the one-hit shutout.

The 12 strikeouts was a season-best for Sterr.

"Kelsey pitched a good game," said Lomira coach Jacob Fakes. "She was kind of dominating, I guess, with 12 strikeouts. We made some good plays in the field and our offense scored consistently during the game."

Liz Neitzel and Emily Beck had two hits each for the Lions (6-9, 4-7), but it was exchange student Natasha Weinickie that got everyone's attention when she recorded her first hit of the season.

Eastern Wisconsin Conference

Campbellsport 2, Kiel 1:

Alli Zurn provided the offense and Hayley Serwe threw the first no-hitter of her career for the Cougars in a victory over the visiting Radiers (10-8, 6-6).

Serwe walked four and struck out six, and no batted ball left the infield.

"She's walked more batters tonight than she has all year in conference, or nonconferene," said Campbellsport coach Rick Simpson. "Hayley was little frustrated with pitches that were in there that were called balls. To her credit, she stuck with it."

After Kiel tallied in the first, Campbellsport (12-2, 9-1) came back to score on in the bottom half when Alyssa McGray singled and then went to second and to third on passed balls. Zurn bunted to score McGray. In the second inning, Zurn doubled and stole third with two outs. She then scored on a wild pitch.

"She's batting over 450 in conference and overall," Simpson said. "She's made a big improvement from last year. Even her outs are hard shots."

FRVC softball: Ships bounce back for win

By Steve Clark

Herald Times Reporter

MANITOWOC — A couple of days made a world of difference for the Manitowoc Lincoln softball team.

Coming off one of their worst performances of the season in a 12-2, five-inning loss to Green Bay Preble on Tuesday, the Ships came up with a near-perfect all-around effort on Thursday to beat Green Bay East, 2-0, in a Fox River Valley Conference softball game at Citizen Park.

"We definitely needed this. We needed this big time to get our confidence up," said senior Kayla Kodet, whose bases-loaded ground ball in the sixth inning produced the first run of the game. "We didn't play too well on Tuesday, but we all agreed that today was one of the best games we played in a long time."

Cory Paquette scattered seven hits and three walks over seven innings, and Lincoln (10-4 overall, 7-3 in the FRVC) made the most of its three hits — two of which came in the sixth inning when the Ships scored both of their runs — to earn the win.

East's Kristin Zimmerman — who had beaten the Ships earlier this season — had allowed only a single to Tania Kiel through the first five innings on Thursday, but she ran into trouble right away in the sixth when Megan Glaeser drew her second walk of the game to lead off the game.

In a scoreless game, the Ships' next hitter, Jena Ansorge, figured to be in a position to lay down a sacrifice bunt to advance Glaeser to second. But Lincoln head coach Heather Garceau had another idea.

"I know she's come up with some clutch hits for us this year. So I thought, 'Let's try it,'" Garceau said. "They're going to be thinking bunt, so I let her swing away."

Even Ansorge expected to get the bunt sign, but instead lined a single to right field that put runners on first and second.

"Usually I would bunt when there are no or one out, but this time she gave me the hit. We knew it was the sixth, so it's time to score, so I just tried to get a hit and I almost hit Megan," said Ansorge, who executed a sacrifice bunt in her first plate appearance of the game. "We knew we were hitting hit the whole game, they were just to people and eventually we knew they would end up getting through and that we would end up with baserunners."

Taylor Rothmund followed with another single to load the bases and Kodet grounded a ball up the third-base line that East's Lindsey Herman couldn't handle cleanly. That allowed Kodet to reach first and, more importantly, allowed Glaeser to score from third.

"I had no idea where I even hit. I heard them say safe which was the main thing," Kodet said. "You just have to step in confident. You just have to step in there and take it to them."

Lincoln made it 2-0 when Woepse followed with a ground ball back to Zimmerman, who quickly fired home trying to force out Ansorge. But East catcher Shine Huwe failed to step on the plate to record the out on Ansorge — who then scored the Ships' second run — before firing to first to retire Woepse.

The Red Devils got out of the sixth without allowing any more runs and then got the first two batters on in the top of the seventh against Paquette. But East failed to get a bunt down to advance the runners as Lincoln recorded the first out of the inning.

"It was more the key bunt that we couldn't get (rather than the key hit)," East coach Tom Zimdars said. "Every inning we had runners on, we just didn't drop the bunts."

The Ships got the second out of the inning on a force out at third base before a single by Taylor Gleason loaded the bases with two outs.

Paquette, however, got Zimmerman — who had a single and two walks in her previous three plate appearances — to hit a pop-up that Lincoln catcher Veronica Bolle squeezed for the final out.

"With all of the support from teammates, it's really not too hard for me (to pitch in close games)," said Paquette, who struck out three in the game. "I know they are going to back me up. I just need to put it where (Bolle) asks for it."

And when Bolle recorded the final out, it all but wiped away any thoughts of Tuesday's loss.

"The girls know how much potential they have and they believe in that, but they haven't been playing to that and it's so frustrating," Garceau said. "We sat down and said Tuesday was the lowest of lows — it can only go up from here. Now let's just play with some confidence, all the time."

Notes: East slips to 9-5 overall, 7-3 in the FRVC. ... Amanda Mier went 2-for-3 to lead the Red Devils. ... East had a pair of runners erased on the base paths during the game. In the first inning, Steph Speel made too big a turn at second base after a sacrifice bunt and Kiel — who made the putout at first on the bunt — threw to second to get Speel in a rundown. Then, in the fifth, Bolle scooped up a bunt attempt by Katie Kissel and threw to second to force out Mier. ... Zimmerman finished with six strikeouts and two walks.

OC softball: Lancers wrap up title

Herald Times Reporter

MANITOWOC — A couple of big innings brought the Olympian Conference softball title back to Manitowoc Lutheran.

Morgan Dittmer's two-run single sparked a four-run fourth inning, and the Lancers added four more runs in the fifth en route to a 10-4 win over Wrightstown at Westfield Softball Park on Thursday that clinched the conference title for Manitowoc Lutheran.

"For the girls, I think it's fantastic," Lutheran head coach Don Menges said. "I thought we should have been conference champs, and the girls went out and did it. It feels great.

"Now we just have to keep getting better."

Things didn't start out that well for the Lancers (11-2 in the OC) as Wrightstown scored single runs in the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead.

Lutheran still trailed by that margin with two outs in the bottom of the fourth when Dittmer — who was starting at catcher in place of an ill Becky Reichardt — smacked a single that scored two runs, while a third came in on the play after a Tiger error.

"That hit really got us going," Menges said. "I think that really fired her up, and it really fired us up."

The Lancers would add one more run that inning and then, after Wrightstown scored in the top of the fifth, put up another four-spot — all coming with two outs — in the fifth.

Nicole Loberger, who was 2-for-2, drove in a pair of runs with a double, while Brooke Schramm added an RBI-double and Amy Schneider chipped in a pinch-hit run-scoring single to cap the outburst.

Amanda Engelbrecht, who was 4-for-4 to pace the Lancers' 12-hit attack, picked up an RBI-single in the sixth as the Lancers tacked on two more runs for their total.

Schramm scattered six hits to collect the win on the mound for Lutheran. The junior hurler struck out six and walked one.

The Lancers will close out their OC season at St. Mary Central on Monday, before hosting Mishicot in the first round of the WIAA Division 3 regional tournament on Thursday.

Mishicot 8, Reedsville 5

REEDSVILLE — Stephanie Wiebensohn went 4-for-5 and capped a four-run fifth inning with a two-RBI single as the Indians rallied for the win.

The Panthers led 5-3 after three innings, before Mishicot pulled within a run entering the top of the fifth. Melissa Sattler, who was 3-for-4 led off the inning with a single and later scored on Ashlee Skarda's base hit. Another run scored for the Indians when Megan Hischke reached on an error before Wiebensohn drilled a two-run single that put Mishicot ahead for good.

Lindsay Van Vonderen added a pair of hits for the Indians (10-6 overall, 8-4 in the OC), while Sam Denor and Bridget Rathsack each had two hits for the Panthers.

Skarda pitched four innings of one-hit relief to earn the win on the mound for the Indians. She struck out four and did not walk a batter.

Brillion 10, St. Mary Central 4

BRILLION — Nicole Popp went 3-for-4 and the Lions broke a 2-2 with a five-run inning to pull out the win.

Amanda Krueger and Morgan Buboltz each added two hits for Brillion, which scored five runs in the fifth inning and added three more in the sixth to break open a close game.

Jordan Piepenburg scattered six hits and four walks while striking out four to earn the win on the mound.

EWC softball: Big inning lifts Two Rivers

Herald Times Reporter

TWO RIVERS — Stephanie Milmoe and Tabatha Romdenne delivered the big hits in Two Rivers' big inning as the Raiders claimed a 9-7 win over New Holstein in an Eastern Wisconsin Conference softball game on Thursday.

Milmoe, who was 2-for-3 in the game and scored three runs, smacked a bases-loaded, two-run single, and Romdenne added a two-run double in Two Rivers' four-run fourth inning that broke a 3-3 tie and put the Raiders ahead for good.

Two Rivers (4-12 overall, 3-7 in the EWC) scored two runs in the first and one in the third to take a 3-1 lead but the Huskies tied the game with two runs in the top of the fourth.

Ani Steinhauer scattered nine hits and three walks, while striking out two to get the win for Two Rivers.

Danielle Rose took the loss for the Huskies (1-11 in the EWC). She surrendered just five hits and struck out four, but walked 12 in the game.

Roncalli 10-2, Kewaskum 5-6

MANITOWOC — The Jets scored nine runs in the first two innings en route to winning the opener as they split a doubleheader with the Indians.

Melanie Holzinger had a three-run double in the first inning of the first game as Roncalli plated six runs to take a 6-1 lead. Kewaskum came back with three runs in the second, but the Jets matched in their half of the inning keyed by Holly Binversie's two-run triple.

5/10 Prep softball: Winneconne puts dominance on display

Northwestern staff

It s been another outstanding season for the Winneconne softball team, and Thursday was a showcase for the biggest reason why the Wolves wrapped up at least a share of their sixth East Central Conference title in the last eight seasons.

With Kaitlyn Herbst on the mound and solid defense behind her, Winneconne shut out host WLA by a 5-0 margin — yet another blanking for Herbst, who has given up just two earned runs in 64 innings this season.

She was also able to improve upon her already sparkling strikeout-to-walk ratio with seven whiffs and no free passes against the Vikings, boosting her totals to 139 K s and a mere 29 bases on balls.

"WLA had runners at third base in two innings with just one out tonight," Winneconne head coach Tim Whitford said. "But we played some nice defense behind Kaitlyn to keep the shutout in tact."
