2009 Recap

Wayland Academy made it through the regular Midwest Classic North season unscathed, boasting an 8-0 mark heading into the MCC tournament. And while the Big Red were upset by Heritage Christian in the MCC semis, they earned a Sectional semifinal berth losing to eventual Division 3 State runner-up Cuba City. Third-place Lake Country Lutheran also qualified for the Sectional round, defeating fourth-place Living Word Lutheran in the Regional final. Heritage, who finished in second place with a 7-1 league mark, was ousted by Dominican in the second round.

2010 Outlook:

The Timberwolves of Living Word Lutheran were very young last season, boasting just one starting senior. The good news is six from that 5-3 Midwest Classic North finishing squad is back, though they will need to find another outside hitter to complement junior All-Conference Second Team nominee Taylor Luce. That shouldn't pose too much of an issue though with senior middle hitters  Kayla Herget and Anna Klotz, as well as right side hitter Lindsy Slak returning to the front row. The T-wolves should also have solid anchors in Libero Chanel Stel, as well as returning sophomore setter Karina Klotz as essential parts to getting the offense into gear.

Lake Country Lutheran has one of just two returning First Team All MCC North honorees returning from last season in junior setter Emily Wineinger but will need to replace both middles and the Libero position. The sole fact that the Lightning have their floor general back for the 2010 season, as well as 2009 Regional championship experience under their belts, puts them once again near the top of the preseason standings.

Heritage Christian knocked off top-seeded Wayland in the MCC tourney last season and will need all the momentum it can entering 2010. The Patriots, like Wayland, was hit pretty hard by graduation as they lost three All-Conference nominations from last year. Heritage does have a competitive program though that has made it past the first round the last three seasons-- twice being ousted by Ozaukee an last season's Regional semifinal loss to Dominican, both of which are in the Patriots' Regional again this fall.

University School will get back an All-Conference First Team senior in Sarah Lawton, who should look to bring this year's Wildcats above .500 in the league. USM will need to find a replacement for Honorable Mention Lily Heun though, but in a conference wiped out by seniors, the Wildcats might just contend with the heavyweights. Wayland Academy may have earned its first ever WIAA Sectional berth last season in Division 3, but the Big Red lost quite a bit of power from that team including Player of the Year Jenna Ptaschinski, First Team Megan Connell and Honorable Mention Stephanie Hill. This year's squad will need to patch those holes quickly if it hopes to repeat as champs.

Messmer senior Chante Hollinshead earned an Honorable Mention All-Conference nomination last season and could get the Bishops back to .500 in the MCC North this year. Brookfield Academy finished 3-5 last season and also has an Honorable Mention returning in senior Catherine Toledo. Both squads will need to find some more support though if they want to climb up the league standings. St. Joan Antida beat The Hope School last season to stay out of last place in the MCC North. This year could be the same story as the two will open the conference season against one another on September 2, meaning one of these squads will start the season undefeated in league play.
