UW-Oshkosh s Ray Tops All-WIAC Women s Volleyball Selections; Schaefer Voted Coach of the Year
MADISON, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh s Jacque Ray was voted the Player of the Year to top the 12 individuals selected to the 2009 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women s Volleyball Team by the league coaches, while Titans head coach Brian Schaefer was chosen the Coach of the Year.
Ray, a senior middle blocker from Richland Center, claimed first team laurels for the second straight year and leads the WIAC with 3.95 points per set, while ranking second with a .327 hitting percentage and 1.20 blocks per set and third with 3.10 kills per set. She has started 35 of 36 matches, reaching double-digits in kills in 22 matches, including a season-high 19 against UW-Platteville on Nov. 7. Ray garnered Sports Imports/American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III Player of the Week honors the week of Oct. 26 - Nov. 1, after being named the outstanding player at the Trinity University (Texas) Invitational.
Her career totals include 146 matches played, 1,071 kills, 455 total blocks, 145 digs and a .264 hitting percentage. Ray is the second player in program listings to receive the conference award, joining Christina Southward who secured the prize in 2001.
Repeat selections on the first team consisted of: UW-La Crosse s Brianne Stankus, UW-Oshkosh s Katie Beining and Christina Cahoon, UW-River Falls Kelsey Scheele and UW-Whitewater s Caitlin Hogan and Keri Klotzbuecher.
Additional first team choices included: UW-Eau Claire s Kristen Moore, UW-Oshkosh s Katelyn Vara, UW-Platteville s Melissa Hillebrand, UW-River Falls Gina DeRosa and UW-Whitewater s Melissa Zuleger.
Named to the four-member All-Defensive Team were: UW-Oshkosh s Christina Cahoon, UW-Platteville s Abby Carey, UW-Stout s Alicia Mizer and UW-Whitewater s Alyssa Bauer. Cahoon and Bauer were recognized for the second consecutive year.
UW-Oshkosh head coach Brian Schaefer was voted the Coach of the Year for the second straight season and third time in his career. He also won the award in 2005. Schaefer directed the Titans, who compiled a 29-match winning streak to start the season, to the 10th conference title in program history and a perfect WIAC mark for the first time since 1990. He owns a 185-28 record in six seasons in charge of the Titans.
An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season.
