Multiple Wisconsin athletes win titles at National Powerlifting Championships

Over 400 high school athletes from all 48 states in the continental United States took part in the 2010 High School Powerlifting Championships held at the Kalahari Resort in Wisconsin Dells over the weekend. Wisconsin athletes fared quite well, taking home titles and setting records in a number of weight classes and divisions.



In the boys varsity division, high schoolers from Wisconsin claimed six of the 11 weight class titles. Eau Claire North's Kyle Nelson totaled 415 kilograms on his bench press, squat, and deadlift to take home the 52 kilogram (approximately 114 pounds) title. Jonathan Lang and Charles McDonald of Neenah took home titles in the 67.5 kg and 75 kg classes respectively.



Ryan Miesbauer of Northwestern High School lifted a total of 700 kilos to take the 100 kg crown. Nathan Marshall of Whitnall scored a total lift of 752.5 kilograms in the 110 kg weight class. Marshall also recorded the highest squat of the competition at 317.5 kilograms, or approximately 698.5 pounds. In the unlimited or super-heavyweight division, Waterford's Zach Tamblyn had a combined lift of 732.5 kilograms to claim the title.



On the girls side, five Wisconsin athletes totaled the highest number in their respective weight class. Michelle Van Dusen of Neenah claimed the title in the 48 kilogram division with a combined total of 380 kilos. Alexa Schillinger of Phillips (pictured) totaled 420 kilos to claim the national title at 56 kg. In the 67.5 kilogram weight class, Brianna Dahm of Manitowoc Lincoln High School totaled 390 kilos on her three best lifts.



Lynn Poetzel joined teammate Schillinger as champions from Phillips High School, with a total of 512.5 kilos in the 90 kg division. Finally, Necedah's Becky Cook took home the title in the unlimited weight class with a total of 500 kg.



Schillinger also had the highest Wilks Total (a measurement of the athletes total weight lifted versus actual body weight) at 512.148. Van Dusen and Poetzel finished second and third in the category. Neenah had the highest team score with 75 total points.
