Tournament History

The tournament resumed in 2000 after an 18-year hiatus. The WIAA did not sponsor a championship in boys volleyball from 1983 until 1999 because of the low participation. The initial boys tournament began in 1947 with Madison West winning the first State title. Waukesha, before the school split into multiple schools, enjoyed an impressive string of success in the 1950s. It won nine championships and finished runner-up three times from 1950 through 1961. Included in that run was five straight championships from 1957-61. Kaukauna also has had a history of success, winning eight State championships, including the first tournament held in the fall. In addition, the Galloping Ghosts have finished runner-up three times. Other multiple champions are Marquette with five titles, and Wisconsin High School of Madison and West Allis Hale with three titles. Antigo, Whitefish Bay and Madison Central have won two titles.

2009 State Championship

New Berlin Eisenhower/West captured its first title and by defeating Nicolet in the championship match 25-20, 23-25, 22-25, 25-21, 16-14. Jeremy Dejno led the Juggernauts with 26 kills.

2010 Field

Franklin has earned its initial berth by defeating Kenosha Tremper 24-26, 25-14, 25-19 and 25-12 in the New Berlin West Sectional final. Senior outside hitter John Jablonowski averages just under three kills per set to lead the Sabers.

Marquette returns to the State Tournament field for the ninth straight year and the ninth time overall. The Hilltoppers have won five titles, capturing the crown in 2002, 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008. They return to the tournament field by defeating Pius XI in the sectional final hosted by West Allis Hale 25-15, 25-14, 25-22 and have six players with over 100 kills on the season.

Greendale’s first experience at State came by virtue of its 26-24, 27-25, 23-25, 16-25, 15-13 victory over Greenfield in the Greenfield Sectional final. The Panthers are led by senior outside hitter Kevin Walsh's 2.7 kills per set average.

Wauwatosa East makes its sixth overall appearance and its fifth in a row. The Red Raiders won the championship in 2006. They earn the opportunity to contend for the crown by defeating Wauwatosa West in the Whitefish Bay Sectional final 20-25, 25-12, 25-16, 22-25, 19-17. Tosa East has a pair of near-300 kill hitters in junior middle Max Kilpin and senior outside Aaron Uden, who average 3.44 and 3.35 kills per set respectively.

Nicolet, the runner-up the last two years, earns its fourth consecutive berth in the tournament field, which also accounts for the Knights’ overall total. They defeated Homestead in the Fond du Lac Sectional final 25-12, 25-18, 25-15. Senior outside hitter Matt Klingspohn leads the team with 295 kills on the season.

Westosha Central defeated Burlington in the Badger Sectional final 25-18, 18-25, 15-25, 25-14, 15-11 to advance to the State semifinals for the first time. The Falcons are led by junior outside hitter Mike Michelau's four kills per set average.

Kaukauna is making its 17th tournament appearance, which is the most of any existing member school. The Galloping Ghosts  have also won the most titles of any existing school with eight. In addition, they have placed runner-up in 1967, 1974 and 1976. They defeated Appleton North in the Kaukauna Sectional final 22-25, 25-11, 25-15, 25-21 to advance into the final field of eight. The Ghosts' 6-2 offense is led by junior outside hitter Alex Judkins' 3.6 kills per set average.

Catholic Memorial qualifies for the seventh time and for the first time since 2007. The Crusaders won the title in 2000 and has finished runner-up four times (2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007).
