Four teams survived and advanced Friday evening at Wisconsin Lutheran College, as the semifinals are set for Saturday at the WIAA State Boys Volleyball Tournament. Here are some brief recaps of Friday’s quarterfinal action, as well as links to the completed box scores.

QUARTERFINAL RECAPS

Germantown 3, Wauwatosa East 1
Box Score

The Warhawks, underdogs in the eyes of many, proved they are viable state contenders this season by knocking off perennial powerhouse Wauwatosa East 25-14, 20-25, 25-12, 25-13.

Germantown was led by senior outside Matt Schultz and senior middle Zak Showalter’s 13 and 10 kills respectively. Junior middle/right side Like Fischer added eight kills while sophomore setter Jake Showalter added 34 assists. Zak Showalter tallied five of the team’s 10.5 team blocks, as his three solo blocks ties for second in a 4-set state tournament match.

Tosa East was led by 13 kills from senior middle Max Kilpin and senior outside Zak Sylvester added 10. Senior setter Sam Ingrilli offered up 32 assists while Sylvester tallied a match-high 10 digs.

Despite each team collecting 43 kills and differing in assists by just two, Wauwatosa East had 12 more hitting errors and twice as many service errors—14 to be exact—than Germantown. The Warhawks also took advantage of some shaky rotations on the Red Raiders’ side of the net and pushed through to their first state semifinal in their first ever trip to the state tournament.

Marquette University 3, Catholic Memorial 1
Box Score

In what has been tabbed the real boys volleyball state championship match, Marquette won its fourth match in five meetings over their heated rival Crusaders 25-23, 23-25, 25-18, 25-19 to surge into the state semifinals.

The depth of the Hilltoppers’ offense ultimately was the difference in a hard-fought battle, as three players tallied double digits in kills. Senior middle Conrad Kaminski led the way with 15 kills, while senior outside Peter Hutz and junior outside AJ Mueller added 14 and 11 kills respectively. All-State First Team setter Michael Schneck tallied a session-high 47 assists and added seven digs, while senior libero Keenan Fliss tallied 20 digs.

For the second straight year, Catholic Memorial senior outside Trevor Novotny was named the state Player of the Year and also for the second straight year, put on another dominating performance. Novotny was the only Crusader reach double-figure kills with 24 while senior setter Tim Heyrman added 41 assists and 22 digs in his final match in a CMH uniform.

After a pair of very tight first sets in which each team won by the bare minimum, Marquette’s attack percentage went through the roof as it blew past Catholic Memorial in the third and fourth sets. The Hilltoppers hit a blistering .490 in those deciding two sets, including .522 in the fourth and final set alone.

Kaukauna 3, Muskego 0
Box Score

Muskego kept it close early and late, but in the middle it was all Kaukauna as the Galloping Ghosts cruised to a 25-19, 25-11, 25-23 win to advance to the state semifinals Saturday at noon. Despite recent trips to Wauwatosa in 2008 and 2010, Friday marked the first win in the state quarters for Kaukauna since the WIAA reinstated is boys volleyball sponsorship at the turn of the century.

As he has all season, senior outside Alex Judkins led the way with a dominating 17-kill and 5-block performance Friday in the nightcap. Senior setter Phillip Uitenbroek tallied 31 assists as the team recorded the second-best 3-set hitting percentage with a phenomenal .431 proficiency as a team.

Muskego got eight kills from senior outside Joey Bandoszeski and seven from senior outside David Mlachnik, but as a team hit a dismal .017 with 21 errors to go with 22 total kills.

The Warriors started hot, racing out to an early first set 9-3 lead. Yet after a quick Kaukauna timeout, it was all Ghosts as they sailed past the upset-minded Warriors for the next two sets. Muskego put up another late run in the third set, owning a two-point lead at 17-15. Though, like the first set, Kaukauna responded with a big run of its own and Judkins kill finally put the match away.

Westosha Central 3, Racine Horlick 0
Box Score

The Falcons flew high Friday night at Wisconsin Lutheran, sweeping heavy underdog Racine Horlick 25-20, 25-19, 25-23 to claim its second straight quarterfinal victory in its two seasons at state.

Westosha Central is headlined by senior outside Mike Michelau, who notched a match-high 19 kills. But junior outside Caleb Mobile was just as stellar with 14 kills of his own to wo with seven aces in the three-set match—a new 3-set state record. Sophomore setter Brooks Gahart offered 34 assists and a pair of blocks as Westosha looked in complete control throughout the match.

Horlick’s Mitch Greiner recorded a team-high 10 kills, while fellow senior outside Ben Schultz added nine. Junior setter added 26 assists in the loss.

With Friday’s win, the Falcons have won 10 of its last 11 matches to close out the year and will look to carry that through to its semifinal matchup with Kaukauna Saturday at noon.
