DIVISION 1 NOTES - BOYS:   Kimberly has qualifiers in 16 events, including relays, to lead the rest of the division. Arrowhead has competitors in 15 events, and Mukwonago has participants in 13 events. Six individuals and two relay teams return to defend titles won in 2011, including one individual that has moved up to Division 1 after capturing a Division 2 championship last year. Senior Josh Dixon of Cedarburg seeks to retain the title in the long jump. He enters the meet with the top qualifying leap of 23-9 1/2. He also looks to return to glory in the triple jump.  Dixon won the event in 2010 and was runner-up last year. He has the event’s top qualifying mark by two feet. Junior Russ Sandvold of Arrowhead is the returning champion in the 1,600-meter run. He enters the meet as a favorite to repeat with the best qualifying time of all competitors at 4:21.66. Senior Spencer Turriff of West De Pere returns in the 300 hurdles to defend his title. He enters the meet with a qualifying time of 39.09, which is second-fastest among all qualifiers in the event. Senior Tommy Meister of Janesville Craig won gold in the 800 run in 2011 and is back for another run at the title. He has qualified with a time of 2:00.67, which is four seconds behind the fastest qualifier in the field. Senior Jesse Johnson of Stevens Point will challenge to repeat as champion in the pole vault. He is tied with Sam Wagner of Mukwonago for the top qualifying height of 15-0. Senior Wally Ellenson of Rice Lake won the Division 2 title in the high jump last year. He moves up a division seeking to conquer the Division 1 ranks this year. He enters the meet with the third-best qualifying jump of 6-7. The two relay squads racing for repeat titles are Whitefish Bay in the 800 relay and Brookfield East in the 1,600 relay.

DIVISION 2 NOTES - BOYS:  East Troy will compete in 10 events, which is the most of any school in the division. Nekoosa is represented in nine events, with Aquinas, Dodgeville/Mineral Point, Freedom and Platteville next with eight. Four individual events and three relays feature champions returning to defend their titles. Junior Michael Christianson of Aquinas is responsible for two of those event titles. He won the 1,600 and 3,200 runs last year, and he has qualified in both events this year with the times of 4:29.12 and 9:40.51, respectively. Both those efforts rank third on the qualifying performance list entering the meet. Junior Cade Clark of Lodi returns to defend his title in the 400 dash. He has qualified with a sectional time 49.80, which ranks seventh among his peers in the event entering the meet. Junior Jake Schimenz of Brown Deer hopes to retain the crown in the 800 run. He appears in good position to challenge for the title with the second-fastest time among qualifiers in the event at 1:57.98, just .17 off the pace of the fastest time. Relay teams seeking consecutive titles are the West Salem 400 relay, the Winneconne 800 relay and the Monroe 3,200 relay.

DIVISON 3 NOTES - BOYS:  Marathon will be competing in the most number of events with 12, including the relays. Darlington has competitors in 10 events, and both Edgar and Whitehall have qualifiers in nine events. Three former champions return to their events in Division 3, two of them are hoping to win consecutive championships. In addition, a pair of relays have qualified in pursuit of repeating as champions. Senior Viktor Stelter of Edgar is the division’s returning champion in the discus. He enters competition with the second-best qualifying toss of 166-4, which is more than three feet behind the top qualifier, senior Zach Blahnik of Algoma, who won the shot put last year. Junior Jake Wiedemeier of Crivitz qualifies for the State meet with a height six inches higher than the next-best qualifier in the pole vault at 14-6. He won the event last year and has his sights on repeating the feat. Senior Kyle Schueller of Edgar hopes to return to form that earned him the State title in the triple jump in 2010. He finished second last season by two inches. Schueller is the top qualifier in the event this season with a mark of 45-2. The Brookfield Academy 400 relay and the Rosholt 3,200 relay are back to defend their titles won a year ago.

DIVISION 1 NOTES - GIRLS:  Ashwaubenon, Bay Port and Verona are entered in the most events with 11, including relays. Neenah is next in line with participants in 10 events. Five student-athletes return in six events to recapture the experience of winning the title as they did in 2011. Senior Michelle Garner of Greenfield is actually attempting to repeat the experience for the third time after winning the 300 hurdles last year and in 2010. The prospects of the third title in the event are promising, having the fastest qualifying time among the challengers in the event.  Junior Allison Parker of Neenah has qualified in the 800 run with a time of 2:16.35, which is less than a second behind the top time in the field. She won the event last year after a near miss at the title in 2010 when she finished runner-up by a mere .01 of a second behind the winner. Senior KeKe Burks of Madison La Follette is the returning champion in the discus. She appears to be in position for another go at the title, having the second-best qualifying throw at 128-5. That mark is a little over a foot shorter than the top qualifying toss. Senior Elexis Fuller-Stewart of Milwaukee Bradley Tech attempts to repeat in the 100 hurdles. She has the second-fastest time among this year’s qualifiers with a pace of 14.05, just .04 behind the top time. Junior Alex Flucke of Ashwaubenon won the pole vault last year and should compete for the title again this season, entering with the second-best sectional vault at 12-1. That is a foot less than the 13-1 recorded by senior Cami Gilson of Arrowhead, who finished second last season. Relays attempting to repeat include Hamilton in the 800 and 1,600, and Neenah in the 3,200.

DIVISON 2 NOTES - GIRLS:  McFarland is represented in the most events with nine, including one relay. Somerset has competitors in eight events, while Aquinas, Columbus, Freedom, Lake Mills and Osceola each have seven events covered. There are 10 individual events and four relays that boast returning champions, including 13 seeking back-to-back titles. Senior Deysha Smith-Jenkins of Dominican has qualified in both the events she won in 2011 and appears to be in position to repeat in those events. She has the fastest qualifying time in the 100 and 200 dashes this year at 12.38 and 25.39, respectfully. She won the events last season and set the Division 2 State record in the 200. Sophomore Bonnie Draxler of Wrightstown won the 400 dash and the pole vault last year as a freshman. She is looking to pick up where she left off with the fastest qualifying time in the quarter mile at 57.68, as well as the top qualifying height in the pole vault at 13-3. Senior Jesse Welch of West Salem has qualified in the high jump a year after capturing the gold in the event. Her sectional mark of 5-2 is tied for fourth-best among qualifiers heading into action. Junior Tess Nelson of Northwestern is the returning champion in the 300 hurdles. She returns to the meet in pursuit of another title with a qualifying time of 47.32, but will need to fend off a number of speedy challengers, including six with quicker qualifying times. Senior Heather Clankie of Brodhead/Juda seeks a repeat crown in the discus. Her qualifying mark ranks second on the performance list, but it is over 10 feet shorter than that of senior Molly Griep of Whitewater. The 1,600 field includes junior Andrea Ostenso of Ladysmith, who raced to the title a year ago. She will be joined by a host of contenders for this year’s victor. Her sectional time of 5:17 ranks eighth among qualifiers in the event. Senior Madeline Haupert of Aquinas is among the leading contenders in the 800 this season after racing to victory in the event last year. Her qualifying time of 2:15.22 is less than a second behind the top time posted at sectionals. Senior Amelia Campbell of Sturgeon Bay missed the opportunity to be going for her third title in the 100 hurdles by a mere .04 of a second  and finishing second last season after winning the event in 2010. She returns for another attempt at a title with a qualifying time of 16.22, which ranks 10th among the qualifiers. The relays attempting to repeat are Xavier in the 400 relay, Catholic Memorial in the 800 relay, Kiel in the 1,600 relay and the Platteville in the 3,200 relay, which is attempting to win its third straight championship.

DIVISION 3 NOTES - GIRLS:  The division is loaded with former champions and equipped with star power.   Two-time defending champion Edgar has athletes competing in 18 events, including relays. Algoma, Manitowoc Lutheran and Wild Rose each have student-athletes qualfied in nine events. Senior Molly Seidel of University Lake School is the three-time defending champion and record holder in the 1,600 and 3,200 runs. She attempts to become only the 18th girl to win an event four times and only the second to win four times in two different events. She already made history last fall when she became only the second girl to win the individual State cross country four times. She is the overwhelming favorite in the 3,200 with the fastest qualifying time of 11:18.10, but she should expect a challenge in the 1,600 based on having the second-fastest qualifying time. The fastest time at sectionals was 5:09.95 recorded by junior Breanna Colbenson of Spring Valley. Senior Faryn Wirkus of Edgar is the two-time defending champion and record holder in the pole vault. She enters the meet with a qualifying vault six inches higher than the next qualifier with her effort of 10-6. Junior Elizabeth Pospyhalla of Edgar attempts to win the 800 run for the third year in a row. She qualified for the State meet with a time of 2:22.97 at sectionals, which is the fourth-fastest among the qualifiers but less than two seconds off the top time. Staying with the Edgar storyline, senior Tessa Thurs is seeking her third crown and second consecutive championship in the 300 hurdles, as well as a repeat title performance in the 100 hurdles. She has the best qualifying time in the 300 hurdles at 47.17, and possesses that distinction in the 100 hurdles as well at 15.41. Senior Meg Heafy of Reedsville is another defending champion in two different events, having captured the gold in the 100 and 200 dashes in 2011. Her status as favorite to repeat in those events are by virtue of her experience and qualifying times, which are the swiftest in both events at 12.19 and 25.81, respectively. The same expectations can be extended to sophomore Kennedy Blahnik of Algoma. As a freshman, she set the Division 3 records in winning the shot put and discus. She ranks first among all qualifiers in both events this year with throws of 44-11 1/2 and 133-6, respectively. Her stiffest challenge in both events could come from senior Kailee Kamps of Belmont, who won the State title in the discus in 2010 and has the second-best qualifying mark in both events. The Edgar 400, 800 and 1,600 relay teams will attempt to post their third consecutive first-place finish, and the Oshkosh Lourdes 3,200 relay looks to win its second straight title.

WHEELCHAIR NOTES:  Senior Trey Roy of West Bend East seeks his third straight first-place finish in the boys 100-meter and 800-meter races. He has the top qualifying time in both events at 16.21 and 2:09.41, respectively. Senior Luke Russell of Verona will pursue his third consecutive title in both the 400 race and shot put. He is ranked second on the qualifying performance list in both of those events. Junior Melanie Watson of Oconomowoc is attempting to win for the third time in the 800 and 1,600 races, and for the second time in the 100-meter race. She has the top qualifying time in each of those events. Junior Dani Ebben of Fort Atkinson is the fastest qualifier in the 400 race after winning the event last year. And, senior Leah Quadracci of Waukesha South returns to the shot put after winning the event last season. She qualified for State this year with the fifth-best mark.
