WSN Cup trophies will be going to familiar display cases as the winners of the 2011-12 awards are the same as last season. In the Large School Division, Arrowhead claimed a fifth straight trophy and once again scored the most points overall. It was another tight battle in the Medium Schools Division, but Notre Dame edged Madison Edgewood for the second straight season. In the Small Schools Division, Aquinas posted a momentous comeback to claim a fifth straight trophy.

The WSN Cup is in its fifth year, recognizing schools that provide and achieve success in many of the WIAA sponsored sports. The award totals points earned in both men's and women's sports. All current WIAA sponsored sports with the exception of summer baseball are included as part of the scoring for the award.

Large School Division

The Arrowhead athletic program continued to stake it's claim as the best in the state of Wisconsin. While their point total of 815.5 was not as high as the record 885 points scored in the 2010-11 season, the dominance was striking nonetheless. Their total was 300.1 points higher than the second place team in the Large School grouping, Middleton. The Warhawks scored the most points during the fall season, the winter season, and the recently completed spring season.

Arrowhead teams claimed three state titles this season:  boys cross country, girls cross country, and boys golf. The boys swimming & diving and girls swimming & diving squads were runners-up. During the spring season that saw them rack up 188.5 points, the Warhawks got strong finishes from the boys and girls track teams in addition to the boys golf title.

It is the fifth straight Large School trophy for the Arrowhead program, and the fifth straight year posting the highest overall score. Congratulations to the Warhawks and Athletic Director Kevin Flegner.

Middleton, Marquette University, Homestead, and Brookfield Central round out the top five in the Large School Division.

Medium Schools Division

Notre Dame ended Madison Edgewood's three-year reign as the Medium School champion last year, and the two powerhouse programs were neck and neck heading into the spring. After the winter sports, Notre Dame held a narrow 15.7 point lead on the Crusaders. However, a huge spring season that saw the Tritons score 291 points allowed them to pull away, racking up a total of 762.1 points to Edgewood's 683.7.

During the spring season Notre Dame got a state title from the boys tennis team, a third place finish in boys golf, a state tournament appearance by the girls soccer team, and a state quarterfinal run by the baseball squad. Those points were in addition to a previous title by the boys hockey team during the winter and state runner-up finish by the girls tennis team in the fall.

It is Notre Dame's second straight Medium Schools Division trophy, as the school also posted the second-highest overall score behind Arrowhead for the second consecutive season. Congratulations to the Tritons and Athletic Director Ken Flaten.

As mentioned, Edgewood finished second while Catholic Memorial was a strong third with 509 points. Whitefish Bay and Shorewood round out the top five in the Medium Schools Division.

Small Schools Division

Aquinas had claimed four consecutive WSN Cup trophies coming into the season, but were in big-time trouble after the winter sports season. The Blugolds were in 9th place heading into the spring, 110 points behind the leader at that time Oshkosh Lourdes. A huge spring season that saw them score 228.3 points vaulted Aquinas into the top spot and a fifth straight Small School trophy.

A somewhat surprising girls track title was the difference for Aquinas, who also got strong spring performances from girls soccer, boys track, and boys tennis. It was a nip and tuck battle the whole way, as Lourdes finished second with 407.5 points. The school co-ops for several sports that meant they had to split points in several instances, which ultimately hurt them in the standings. Edgar was a strong contender as well, scoring 407 points thanks to state titles from boys and girls track in the spring.

Congratulations goes out to the Blugolds and Athletic Director Ted Knutson.

In addition to Lourdes and Edgar, Saint Mary's Springs posted a strong fourth-place showing with 391 points while Regis was fifth with 370. The Prairie School and Newman Catholic also went over the 300-point mark.

Congratulations to the winners and a great job by all the teams during an outstanding and exciting 2011-12 sports season.

Look for the WSN Cup to appear in the winning school's trophy cases this fall.
