Beloit Memorial -- September 4th, 2009...that was the last time Beloit Memorial had gotten a win in varsity football coming into Week 5. That 12-6 victory over Janesville Craig precipitated a 29-game losing streak for the Purple Knights that spanned two full seasons and parts of two others. However, that streak is no more as Beloit rallied for a 38-30 win over Madison East Friday night. It certainly wasn't a pretty game by either team, with 9 total turnovers and 25 penalties, but Beloit did enough to get the "W". The team got down several times, and trailed 31-22 in the fourth quarter until Denzel Barnes engineered a pair of late touchdown drives to pull off the win.

 

Grafton -- While Beloit entered the year with the second-longest active losing streak in the state, Grafton carried the fourth-longest into the year. The streak had reached 26 games heading into Week 5, dating back to September 25th, 2009 when the Blackhawks defeated Nicolet 14-6. It was Nicolet on the schedule again this week, and Grafton not only got a win but shutout the Knights 27-0. Matt Weisflog completed 6 of 8 passes for 156 yards and 2 touchdowns while Beau Benzschawel added 120 yards and a score on the ground.

 

Green Bay East -- The Red Devils have not made the playoffs since 2007 and haven't won more than two league games since that time either. Last year they lost to eventual FRCC champion Manitowoc Lincoln 51-0. With that in mind, many people didn't expect a tight game between East and Manitowoc on Friday. However, the Red Devils pulled off the upset, defeating the Ships 40-30 after jumping out to an early 19-7 lead. Running back Jimmy Shepard provided a number of big plays, carrying the ball just 9 times but racking up 215 yards and 3 touchdowns for the team's first win of the year.

 

Menomonee Falls -- The Indians entered Friday's match-up against Division 1's second-ranked team Sussex Hamilton 2-2 overall and 2-1 in the tough Greater Metro Conference. The Chargers of Hamilton had perhaps the state's most impressive resumes, with wins over some of the best programs in southeast Wisconsin. Which made the early scores that came across from the game a bit surprising. Falls jumped out to an early 14-0 lead and then answered a Hamilton score with 10 points in the third quarter to go up 24-7. They held on despite a pair of fourth quarter Hamilton touchdowns for a 24-21 victory. Cole Hernikl scored all three touchdowns for Falls -- two on the ground and one through the air.

 

Stanley-Boyd -- Neither the Orioles nor their Week 5 opponent Colby was able to get a whole lot going offensively Friday night, but it was some game-changing defensive plays that made the difference for Stanley-Boyd. Dusty Spaeth and Dalton Lewallen returned interceptions for touchdowns as the Orioles knocked off defending Division 5 state champion Colby 23-10 to remain undefeated on the year. It was the first points Stanley-Boyd has allowed this season.
