Luke Fischer has won a lot of games during his outstanding high school basketball career at Germantown. 

That much everybody knows as the Warhawks have won 55 straight games heading into their matchup with Mukwonago in today’s WIAA Division 1 state-championship game. 

What some may not know is how far Fischer has come during his prep career.

Shaking off an injury that forced him to miss six games as a junior, Fischer was able to add weight and strength each year to his long frame while also becoming more aggressive and developing a consistent ability to finish around the basket.

On the other end of the court, Fischer has slowly but surely evolved into a dominate performer, blocking shots and grabbing rebounds at a high rate.  

In large part because of Fischer’s vastly improved play and Germantown’s absolute domination of opponents over the past several years, the 7-foot-0 post player headed to Indiana University on a scholarship earned the coveted Mr. Basketball award in voting done by a committee of the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association. 

The vote for Mr. Basketball this season was exceptionally difficult as the voting committee has several outstanding candidates, including Onalaska senior and Iowa State recruit Matt Thomas, Dominican senior and Marquette recruit Duane Wilson, Vincent senior and Marquette recruit Deonte Burton, Aquinas senior and Wisconsin recruit Bronson Koenig and Sun Prairie senior and Nebraska recruit Nick Fuller, among others considered strongly. 

After averaging 16.8 points and 7.6 rebounds per game as a junior for a Germantown squad that went 28-0 and beat Milwaukee King in the Division 1 title game, Fischer is averaging 20.5 points and 9.4 rebounds per contest as a senior, leading Germantown to a 27-0 mark entering today’s title game. 

“I found out when coach (Steve) Showalter today me (Friday) during shoot-around,” Fischer said. “I can’t believe it happened this year with so many good players in this class … Duane Wilson, Matt Thomas, Nick Fuller and on and on. 

“It’s an honor to win the award.”

Following in the footsteps of recent Mr. Basketball winners Sam Dekker of Sheboygan Lutheran (2012), Nimrod Hilliard of Madison East (2011), T.J. Bray of Catholic Memorial (2010) and Jeronne Maymon of Madison Memorial (2009), Fischer stepped up his game during his senior season to become an absolute nightmare for opponents to defend. 

Fischer’s ability to score with either hand in the lane, coupled with his smooth perimeter jump shot, make him an extremely difficult matchup for opponents. 

Toss in the facts he’s 7-feet tall, runs the floor well and competes with high energy it becomes easy to see why he’s scored 25 or more points 10 times this season. 

Friday evening in a Division 1 state semifinal matchup against Oshkosh North at the Kohl Center, Fischer finished with 32 points, 16 rebounds and six blocked shots to lead the Warhawks to an 80-60 victory. 

“Being a coach and a former player myself, I got awards because our teams won games,” coach Showalter said. “When you compare guys who are equal, a guy who has led his team to victory over and over and over … that is more important than individual stats. Luke has done that throughout his career at Germantown."
