Senior Girls Basketball Awards: Defense Finalists

Wisconsin Sports Network is proud to showcase the WSN High School Basketball Awards.

The pre-season watch list was trimmed down to 15 semi-finalists, and five finalists for the award have now been selected. Winners are announced the week of the state tournament. Finalists are eligible for just one of the five awards. There will be a total of 25 finalists for the five awards, five different players for each award.

WSN Senior Girls Basketball Awards -- Defense Finalists: 

Brittney Birkhauser, Assumption -- Birkhauser defends the opposing team's best player whether they are a guard or a forward and has kept a number of excellent offensive players well below their season aveages. Brittney is also third on the team in scoring with 6.7 points per game.  

Dana McMorrow, Kimberly -- McMorrow is an excellent on-ball defender and a strong part of the Papermakers defense that allows under 30 points per game. Her strong defensive play has the them undefeated headed into sectional semifinals.

Mickey Roland, New London -- Roland is a very sound defensive player, averaging just under 3 steals per contest. She also leads the Bulldogs in scoring (9.5 ppg), rebouding (6.8 rpg), and assists (2 apg). 

Michaela Slind, Baldwin-Woodville -- Slind at 5-foot-11 uses her length to be disruptive on the defensive end. She averages 3.8 steals and just under 2 blocks per contes for the Blackhawks. Slind also averages 7.4 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 3 assists per game. 

Jen Wellnitz, Black Hawk -- Wellnitz is a very quick and athletic wing that averages over 6 steals per game for the Warriors. The Green Bay recruit has an excellent all-around game, she also averages 23.8 points, 8 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game.
