WSN Senior Baseball Awards: Pitcher Finalists

Wisconsin Sports Network is proud to showcase the 2014 WSN Senior Baseball Awards presented by Taco Bell.

The pre-season watch list has been trimmed down to five finalists. Winners are announced the week of the spring baseball state tournament.

WSN Senior Baseball Awards -- Pitcher Finalists:

Cal Giese, Stevens Point -- Giese was a Unanimous First Team All-Conference pitcher and infielder for the Panthers. He earned Second Team All-State recognition last season and could move up this year. He is currently 9-1 with a 0.86 ERA and 94 strikeouts, allowing just 28 hits in 57 innings.

Alex McIntosh, Hortonville -- Another year, another outstanding season for the Polar Bears and legendary head coach Don Williams, with another outstanding senior pitcher. McIntosh has strated 9 games this year and pitched twice in relief, with a 9-1 record and 1 save. He's given up just 39 hits in 67 innings, sporting a 0.84 ERA on the year with 82 strikeouts, while allowing opposing hitters to bat just .161.

Heath Renz, Jefferson - The Jefferson baseball team has been one of the talks of the 2014 season, with a total of 8 no-hitters among the staff. Renz threw two of those by himself, and combined with Jacob Nelson on another. He's 10-1 entering Sectional play, with 102 strikeouts in 59 2/3 innings. He's thrown 5 shutouts, and has a 0.70 ERA on the year.

B.J. Sabol, Lake Country Lutheran -- The Lightning are the only undefeated team remaining heading into the Sectionals, with a talented core group, including Sabol. He's an elite hitter (.568 BA, 35 RBI), but gets the nod as a pitcher. In 56 innings, he's allowed just 24 hits and 5 earned runs. His 11-0 record and 0.62 ERA are among the best in the state, as are his 111 strikeouts.

Mitch Stalsberg, Viroqua -- Stalsberg has done whatever asked on the Blackhawks pitching staff, starting or closing, but dominating no matter when he's been called on. He currently sports a 5-1 record with 3 saves. In 39 2/3 innings, he's given up just 10 hits and 1 lonely earned run, with a 0.18 ERA and 85 strikeouts.
