Week 9 Football Preview: Special Playoff Scenarios Edition

10/15/2014, 1:45pm CDT
By Travis Wilson

There are several big games this week, including many that will impact conference races. However, the big story statewide is the playoffs; who is in, who needs to win to get in, who is on the bubble. As such, we're going to change up the preview this week and focus on those games that may impact playoff qualification. We will break them down on a conference-by-conference basis. To view our current Playoff Qualifying Report, click here. To check out our PROJECTED Playoff Field, click here.

WisSports.net will have a projected playoff field posted shortly after all games are completed Friday night, likely between 10:30 and 11 pm. The WIAA has indicated they will release the official playoff field around midnight, and we will be posting it immediately as well. The WIAA will be releasing the 8-team regional groupings around 1:30 am, and the actual playoff brackets and match-ups on Saturday afternoon. WisSports.net is once again your BEST source for the brackets and other playoff information so be sure to visit WSN frequently and hit refresh often.

Please note, this report assumes several things:

  • All teams that are currently playoff-eligible (meaning they've guaranteed themselves at least a .500 conference record) will get in the playoffs. The last two years saw every .500 team make the playoffs plus several under .500 teams. There is a chance 1 or 2 .500 teams could miss out via tiebreakers is multiple games go a certain way, but it is unlikely and for the sake of time and space, we didn't address those games in the write-ups.
  • Teams that finish 2-3 in conference will have no shot at the playoffs due to changes in tiebreaker procedures this year. If the WIAA does need to take sub-.500 teams, the order would go 4-5, then 3-4, and finally 2-3. There would likely be 12 to 15 teams at least above any 2-3 conference record teams. Thus, teams who have a best case scenario of finishing 2-3 are not mentioned in the game write-ups and are considered "Out".

---------------------------------------

Badger-North

Waunakee (3-2) at Baraboo (2-3) – Waunakee is eligible and likely to get in, but Baraboo can become eligible with the upset.

In: DeForest, Mount Horeb/Barneveld.  Eligible: Waunakee, Reedsburg.  Bubble: Baraboo.  Out: Sauk Prairie, Portage.

Badger-South

In: Monona Grove, Milton, Oregon.  Eligible: Stoughton.  Out: Fort Atkinson, Madison Edgewood, Monroe.

Bay

Denmark (3-4) at Shawano (2-5) – Denmark can become playoff-eligible with a victory, but Shawano is eliminated and has already scheduled a Plus One game.

In: Menasha, West De Pere, Luxemburg-Casco.  Eligible: Seymour.  Bubble: Denmark.  Out: Marinette, Shawano, New London, Oconto Falls.

Big Eight

Verona (5-3) at Madison Memorial (3-5) – Verona is in, but Madison Memorial can get in the discussion possibly with a win, as they'd be very high on the list of sub-.500 teams if the WIAA is forced to take those squads this year.

In: Middleton, Janesville Craig, Madison La Follette, Madison West, Verona, Sun Prairie.  Bubble: Madison Memorial.  Out: Janesville Parker, Madison East, Beloit Memorial.

Big Rivers

Rice Lake (3-3) at Chippewa Falls (1-5) – Rice Lake clinches a spot with a victory, but a loss would keep them alive in the event the WIAA has to take sub-.500 teams, though they'd be a ways down that list.

Menomonie (3-3) at River Falls (2-4) – A Menomonie win would extend their state record 27 year playoff streak; a Menomonie loss would leave both the Mustangs and River Falls in limbo as they'd wait to see if the WIAA takes any sub-.500 teams, but both would be low on that list.

In: Superior, Hudson, Eau Claire Memorial.  Bubble: Rice Lake, Menomonie, River Falls.  Out: Chippewa Falls, Eau Claire North.

Capitol-North

Columbus (2-2) at Lakeside Lutheran (2-2) – This is a play-in game for the postseason – the winner gets in and the loser has a 99.9999% chance of missing the playoffs.

In: Lodi, Poynette.  Bubble: Columbus, Lakeside Lutheran.  Out:  Lake Mills, Watertown Luther Prep.

Capitol-South

In: Cambridge, Waterloo, Marshall.  Out: Belleville, New Glarus/Monticello, Wisconsin Heights.

Central Lakeshore

Kohler/Sheb. Lutheran/Christian (2-2) at Cedar Grove-Belgium (3-1) – CGB is in already, but an upset by the Kohler co-op would get them in; a loss by Kohler would essentially eliminate them.

In: Ozaukee, Cedar Grove-Belgium, Howards Grove.  Bubble: Kohler/Sheb. Lutheran/Christian.  Out: Oostburg, Random Lake.

Classic Eight

Waukesha North (0-6) at Kettle Moraine (2-4) – North is done, and Kettle Moraine would be with a loss. A KM victory would leave them towards the top of the heap of sub-.500 teams due to tiebreakers, but they'd have to hope the WIAA ends up needing to take probably 3-4 teams that finish under .500 in conference in order to get in.

In: Waukesha West, Arrowhead, Muskego, Mukwonago, Catholic Memorial.  Bubble: Kettle Moraine.  Out: Waukesha South, Waukesha North.

Cloverbelt

Fall Creek (3-4) at Regis (6-1) Thursday – Fall Creek becomes playoff-eligible with an upset of Regis, but is eliminated with a loss.

Colby (3-4) at Neillsville (0-7) – Colby becomes playoff-eligible with a victory, but a shocking loss to Neillsville would eliminate them from the postseason.

In: Stanley-Boyd, Regis, Spencer/Columbus Catholic.  Eligible: Osseo-Fairchild.  Bubble: Fall Creek, Colby.  Out: Altoona, Cadott, Neillsville.

Cloverwood

McDonell Central (4-4) at Loyal (4-4) – This could be a play-in game, as the winner clinches a spot. The loser would move to the top of the list if the WIAA ends up taking sub-.500 teams.

Newman Catholic (3-5) at Greenwood/Granton (4-4) – A G2 win would clinch a playoff spot for them and eliminate Newman. A Newman Catholic win would put both at 4-5 in conference, and towards the top of the list of sub-.500 teams if the WIAA has to go that route.

In: Athens, Owen-Withee, Abbotsford.  Bubble: McDonell Central, Loyal, Greenwood/Granton, Newman Catholic.  Out: Assumption, Gilman, Thorp.

Coulee

In: Arcadia, Westby, Black River Falls.  Out: Luther, Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau, Viroqua.

CWC-8

Manawa (3-3) at Bonduel (4-2) – A Manawa win gets them in, but a loss would almost certainly knock them out.

In: Amherst, Shiocton, Iola-Scandinavia, Bonduel. Bubble: Manawa.  Out: Weyauwega-Fremont, Wittenberg-Birnamwood, Pacelli.

CWC-10

In: Rosholt, Almond-Bancroft, Wild Rose.  Out: Port Edwards, Tri-County, Tigerton/Marion.

Dairyland

Melrose-Mindoro (4-2) at Whitehall (3-3) – Melrose-Mindoro is already in, but a Whitehall victory would get The Norse into the postseason. A Whitehall loss would leave them hoping the WIAA needs to take at least 3-4 sub-.500 conference teams and that their tiebreaker numbers are good enough.

Alma Center Lincoln (3-3) at Cochrane-Fountain City (3-3) – Possibly a play-in game, as the winner would be guaranteed a playoff spot. The loser would have a slim chance of getting in if the WIAA does end up needing to take sub-.500 teams.

In: Independence/Gilmanton, Eleva-Strum, Melrose-Mindoro.  Bubble: Alma Center Lincoln, Cochrane-Fountain City, Whitehall.  Out: Blair-Taylor, Augusta.

Dunn-St. Croix

Spring Valley (3-2) at Glenwood City (2-3) – A Spring Valley win clinches a spot for the Cardinals and eliminates Glenwood City; a Glenwood City win almost certainly gets both teams into the playoffs.

In: Saint Croix Central, Colfax.  Bubble: Spring Valley, Boyceville, Glenwood City.  Out: Mondovi, Elk Mound.

Eastern Valley

In: Freedom, Xavier, Waupaca, Little Chute.  Eligible: Berlin.  Out: Fox Valley Lutheran, Winneconne, Ripon, Clintonville.

Eastern Wisconsin

Kiel (2-4) at Campbellsport (3-3) – A Campbellsport win clinches for them and eliminates Kiel; a Kiel victory would mean they'd both have to wait and see if the WIAA takes any sub-.500 teams, and if their tiebreakers are good enough.

Two Rivers (3-3) at New Holstein (1-5) – Two Rivers can clinch with a win, but a loss would put them towards the bottom of the sub-.500 list, if the WIAA even ends up taking any of those schools.

Sheboygan Falls (1-5) at Waupun (2-4) – A Waupun loss eliminates the Warriors, but a win could get them in the discussion if the WIAA takes sub-.500 teams.

In: Plymouth, Kewaskum.  Bubble: Campbellsport, Two Rivers, Kiel, Waupun.  Out: Sheboygan Falls, New Holstein.

Flyway

Laconia (3-3) at Lomira (2-4) – A Laconia win clinches a playoff spot for the Spartans and eliminates Lomira; a Lomira victory would leave both teams at 3-4 and hopeful that the WIAA has to take sub-.500 teams and that their tiebreaker numbers are good enough.

In: Saint Mary's Springs, Kettle Moraine Lutheran, Omro.  Bubble: Laconia, Winnebago Lutheran, Lomira.  Out: Mayville, North Fond du Lac.

FRCC

Bay Port (7-0) at Green Bay Southwest (3-4) – A Bay Port win would eliminate Southwest, while a GBSW victory would make them playoff-eligible and almost certain to get into the postseason.

In: Bay Port, De Pere, Notre Dame, Ashwaubenon, Green Bay Preble.  Eligible: Manitowoc Lincoln.  Bubble: Green Bay Southwest.  Out: Sheboygan South, Pulaski, Green Bay East, Green Bay West, Sheboygan North.

Great Northern

Lakeland (2-3) at Merrill (5-0) – If Lakeland can spring the upset, they would become playoff-eligible and almost certain to get in; a loss eliminates the T-Birds.

Medford (2-3) at Ashland (1-4) – A Medford victory gets them eligible and likely to get in; a loss eliminates them.

In: Merrill, Mosinee, Antigo.  Bubble: Medford, Lakeland.  Out: Ashland, Rhinelander.

Great Western

In: Hurley

Greater Metro

Wauwatosa East (1-5) at Sussex Hamilton (3-3) – A Hamilton victory gets them in, a loss would leave them hoping the WIAA takes sub-.500 teams and they are high enough on the tiebreakers to sneak in.

West Allis Hale (2-4) at Brookfield Central (3-3) Thursday – A Brookfield Central win gets them in and eliminates Hale; a Hale win would leave them both 3-4 in conference and dependent on the WIAA to have to take sub-.500 teams and that they have a good enough tiebreaker.

In: Marquette, Menomonee Falls, Brookfield East.  Bubble: Brookfield Central, Sussex Hamilton, West Allis Hale.  Out: Wauwatosa East, West Allis Central.

Heart O'North

Barron (1-5) at Northwestern (3-3) – Northwestern clinches with a win but is up in the air with a loss, as they'd be one of numerous teams to finish 3-4 in conference and have to hope the WIAA needs to take some of them and that they have a good tiebreaker.

Bloomer (6-0) at Cumberland (3-3) – Cumberland clinches with a win but is up in the air with a loss, as they'd be one of numerous teams to finish 3-4 in conference and have to hope the WIAA needs to take some of them and that they have a good tiebreaker.

Hayward (3-3) at Spooner (3-3) – The winner clinches a playoff spot while the loser will be hoping the WIAA takes sub-.500 teams and they have a high enough tiebreaker.

In: Bloomer, Chetek-Weyerhaeuser.  Bubble: Northwestern, Hayward, Cumberland, Spooner. Out: Barron, Ladysmith.

Independent

Washburn co-op plays a game against Phillips in Week 9 that does not count for playoff qualification, so they're guaranteed to finish 4-4 overall for WIAA purposes. They'll get in ahead of all teams that finish under .500 in conference play, but behind any teams that finish at .500.

Lakeland-North

Unity (3-2) at Saint Croix Falls (2-3) – A Unity victory clinches them a playoff spot and eliminates Saint Croix Falls. An SCF win would make both teams playoff-eligible and likely to get in.

In: Frederic, Cameron.  Eligible: Unity, Grantsburg.  Bubble: Saint Croix Falls.  Out: Webster, Flambeau.

Lakeland-South

In: Pepin/Alma, Clear Lake.  Eligible: Turtle Lake, Elmwood/Plum City, Lake Holcombe/Cornell (play non-conf Week 9). Out: Clayton, Shell Lake.

Marawood

Tomahawk (2-4) at Chequamegon (3-3) – A Chequamegon win gets them into the playoffs. A win by Tomahawk very likely would eliminate both, as they'd be part of a group of teams at 3-4 in conference, and they'd need to hope the WIAA has to take several sub-.500 squads, though their tiebreakers probably would not be very good.

In: Edgar, Auburndale, Stratford, Marathon.  Bubble: Chequamegon, Tomahawk.  Out: Pittsville, Rib Lake/Prentice.

Marinette & Oconto

Coleman (6-0) at Wausaukee (3-3) – Wausaukee gets in with a win, while a loss would leave them hoping the WIAA needs to take at least 3-4 sub-.500 teams and their tiebreakers are good enough.

Suring (2-4) at Crivitz (4-2) – Suring losing would eliminate them, but a win would give them a glimmer of hope of getting in should the WIAA need to take several sub-.500 teams.

In: Coleman, Gillett, Crivitz, Peshtigo.  Bubble: Wausaukee, Suring.

Metro Classic

Racine Lutheran (3-3) at Saint Thomas More (0-6) Thursday – A RaLu victory gets them in the playoffs, while an upset loss would have them among a heap of teams at 3-4 in conference hoping the WIAA needs to take several sub-.500 teams, and that they have a good enough tiebreaker number.

Catholic Central (5-1) at Kenosha St. Joseph (3-3) – St. Joe's gets in with a win, but would have a very small chance of qualifying for the playoffs should they lose, as they'd have to hope for the WIAA to take sub-.500 teams and that their tiebreaker number is higher than 12-15 other schools.

Martin Luther (2-4) at Shoreland Lutheran (4-2) – Martin Luther is fully eliminated with a loss, but a victory would give them the slightest of chances of sneaking in, but if they're in a position to do so, it will come down to tiebreakers.

In: Racine St. Catherine's, Catholic Central, Shoreland Lutheran.  Bubble: Racine Lutheran, Kenosha St. Joseph, Martin Luther.  Out: Dominican, Saint Thomas More.

Middle Border

Prescott (3-3) at Ellsworth (3-3) – This is likely a play-in game, with the winner qualifying for the playoffs. The loser may have a chance but it would hinge on whether the WIAA has to take sub-.500 teams, how many they take, and what their tiebreaker number is.

In: Somerset, Osceola, New Richmond.  Bubble: Prescott, Ellsworth.  Out: Durand, Baldwin-Woodville, Amery.

Midwest Classic

Kenosha Christian Life (2-4) at Lake Country Lutheran (6-0) – Christian Life is eliminated with a loss and would stand a very small chance of getting in even with a win (which would likely be the upset of the year), as they'd be dependent on the WIAA needing to take several sub-.500 teams and their tiebreaker number being good enough.

SJNWMA (2-4) at Living Word Lutheran (1-5) – St. John's is eliminated with a loss and would stand a very small chance of getting in even with a win, as they'd be dependent on the WIAA needing to take several sub-.500 teams and their tiebreaker number being good enough.

In: Lake Country Lutheran, Brookfield Academy, Saint Francis, University School.  Bubble: St. John's NW Military, Kenosha Christian Life.  Out: Living Word Lutheran, HOPE Christian.

Milwaukee City

Milwaukee Pulaski co-op (2-3) at Milwaukee Hamilton (4-1) – This game could be the most impactful game of Week 9, as a Pulaski win would get them eligible and likely in the postseason, as well as possibly bump Kimberly down to D2. A Pulaski loss eliminates them.

Milw. Morse-Marshall (1-4) at Milw. Washington (2-3) – Washington would be eliminated with an upset loss, but likely in with a victory.

In: Milwaukee Riverside, Milwaukee King, Milwaukee Madison, Milwaukee Hamilton.  Bubble: Bradley Tech, Pulaski co-op, Washington co-op.  Out: Morse-Marshall, Vincent, Bay View, South.

Mississippi Valley

La Crosse Central (2-4) at West Salem (4-2) – Central is eliminated with a loss and would stand a very small chance of getting in even with a win as they'd be dependent on the WIAA needing to take several sub-.500 teams and their tiebreaker number being good enough.

North Shore

Port Washington (2-4) at Germantown (5-1) – Port is eliminated with a loss and would stand a very small chance of getting in even with a win (which would be a huge upset), as they'd be dependent on the WIAA needing to take several sub-.500 teams and their tiebreaker number being good enough.

In: Homestead, Germantown, Cedarburg, Whitefish Bay.  Bubble: Port Washington, Grafton.  Out: Milwaukee Lutheran, Nicolet.

Northern Lakes

Crandon (2-4) at Menominee Indian (1-5) – Crandon is eliminated with a loss and would stand a very small chance of getting in even with a win, as they'd be dependent on the WIAA needing to take several sub-.500 teams, though their tiebreaker number would be very low.

Northern Elite (4-2) at Wabeno/Laona (2-4) – Wabeno/Laona is eliminated with a loss and would stand a very small chance of getting in even with a win, as they'd be dependent on the WIAA needing to take several sub-.500 teams and their tiebreaker number being good enough.

Florence (3-3) at Elcho/White Lake (0-6) – Florence clinches a spot with a victory, but a loss would have them hoping the WIAA takes several sub-.500 teams and that they have a tiebreaker number high enough to sneak in.

In: Northern Elite.  Bubble: Florence, Crandon, Wabeno/Laona.  Out: Menominee Indian, Elcho/White Lake.

Olympian-Packerland Large

Roncalli (3-3) at Kewaunee (4-2) – Roncalli clinches a playoff spot with a win, while a loss would leave them as potentially one of the top 3-4 conference teams in the tiebreaker list, but they'd have to hope the WIAA needs to take several sub-.500 teams.

Chilton (3-3) at Southern Door (4-2) – Chilton can clinches with a victory, but a loss would have them among numerous teams to finish 3-4 in conference play hoping that the WIAA needs to take several of them, and that their tiebreaker number is higher compared to other squads.

In: Wrightstown, Valders, Southern Door, Kewaunee.  Bubble: Chilton, Roncalli.  Out: Brillion, Sturgeon Bay.

Olympian-Packerland Small

Reedsville (2-3) at Saint Mary Central (0-5) – A Reedsville win would get them qualified and most likely in, while a loss would leave them eliminated.

In: Algoma, Mishicot.  Eligible: Hilbert, Manitowoc Lutheran.  Bubble: Reedsville.  Out: Oconto, Saint Mary Central.

Ridge & Valley

North Crawford (4-1) at De Soto (2-3) – A De Soto win would get them eligible and very likely to extend their state record for most playoff appearances to 30. A loss eliminates the Pirates.

Weston (2-3) at Wauzeka (0-5) – Weston would be eliminated with an upset loss, but is likely to get in with an expected victory.

In: Ithaca, North Crawford, Kickapoo/La Farge.  Bubble: De Soto, Weston.  Out: Seneca, Wauzeka.

Rock Valley-North

East Troy (2-3) at Jefferson (4-1) – East Troy is eliminated with a loss but would likely steal a postseason berth with an upset victory.

In: Evansville/Albany, McFarland, Jefferson.  Bubble: East Troy.  Out: Whitewater, Edgerton.

In: Wautoma, Adams-Friendship.  Bubble: Wisconsin Dells.  Out: Nekoosa, Mauston.

Southeast

Kenosha Tremper (2-4) at Kenosha Bradford (3-3) – Bradford clinches with a win and would eliminate Tremper in the process. A Tremper win leaves them both at 3-4 in conference, with a small chance of getting in the postseason, where their chances would be dependent on the WIAA needing to take sub-.500 teams, and their tiebreakers being good enough.

Racine Horlick (3-3) at Kenosha Indian Trail (4-2) – A Horlick upset would clinch for them, while a loss would probably leave them out, though they'd have a sliver of hope in the event the WIAA needs to take sub-.500 teams.

In: Franklin, Oak Creek, Kenosha Indian Trail.  Bubble: Kenosha Bradford, Racine Horlick, Kenosha Tremper.  Out: Racine Park, Racine Case.

Southern Lakes

Union Grove (1-5) at Badger (3-3) – Badger is in with a win, but would need some help if they lose, hoping the WIAA takes several sub-.500 teams.

In: Burlington, Wilmot, Waterford, Elkhorn.  Bubble: Badger, Delavan-Darien.  Out: Westosha Central, Union Grove.

SWAL

Riverdale (2-4) at Darlington (6-0) – Riverdale is eliminated with a loss, but if they were able to pull off an incredible upset, they could be in the conversation for a playoff spot if the WIAA takes sub-.500 teams.

Boscobel (1-5) at Iowa-Grant (3-3) – IG is in with a win but firmly on the bubble should they get upset, hoping the WIAA has to take numerous sub-.500 teams.

Mineral Point (4-2) at Fennimore (3-3) – Fennimore is in with a win, but would be a long shot for the playoffs with a loss, as they'd need to hope the WIAA takes several sub-.500 teams, and even then it would come down to how they fare in tiebreakers potentially.

In: Darlington, Cuba City, Mineral Point.  Bubble: Fennimore, Iowa-Grant, Riverdale.  Out: Boscobel, Southwestern.

SWC

Prairie du Chien (1-3) at River Valley (2-2) – Valley gets in with a victory, but would stand little to no chance to make it with a loss.

VFA-North

Kaukauna (2-4) at Appleton West (0-6) – Kaukauna is eliminated with a loss, but even a win would have them playoff chances at very slim, as they'd need the WIAA to take numerous sub-.500 teams, though their tiebreaker numbers probably wouldn't be very high compared to other teams.

Kimberly (6-0) at D.C. Everest (3-3) – DCE is in with a monumental upset of Kimberly, but a loss would not 100% eliminate the Evergreens, though they'd have a small chance of making it into the playoffs, needing a lot of things to go their way on possible tiebreakers.

In: Kimberly, Appleton North, Wausau West, Appleton East.  Bubble: D.C. Everest, Kaukauna.  Out:  Wausau East, Appleton West.

VFA-North

Stevens Point (2-4) at Oshkosh West (1-5) – A SPASH loss would eliminate the Panthers. Even with a  win, due to four extremely tight losses earlier in the year, Stevens Point would likely find itself on the outside looking in unless the WIAA needs to take numerous sub-.500 teams, though their tiebreaker numbers would be fairly low.

In: Oshkosh North, Fond du Lac, Hortonville, Neenah.  Bubble: Stevens Point.  Out: Wisconsin Rapids, Oshkosh West, Marshfield.

WestPAC

Eligible: Northland Pines

Wisconsin Little Ten

Beaver Dam (1-5) at West Bend East (2-4) – WBE is eliminated with a loss. A win would put them in consideration if the WIAA does need to take sub-.500 teams, but their tiebreaker numbers would likely leave them out still.
