WisSports.net Level 1 Team of the Week Nominees:

Berlin - In addition to strong playoff showings by the top teams in the league, the last two seasons a team has come from the middle of the pack in the standings to make a deep postseason run. In 2012 it was Freedom advancing to the state semi-finals after earning an 8-seed in their region, while last year Winneconne shocked everyone to win the Division 4 state title after going 4-4 in league play. Could Berlin be that underdog story from the EVC this year? They're off to a good start, shutting out Eastern Wisconsin Conference champion Plymouth 21-0 to score the only 8-seed over 1-seed victory of Level 1. Mitchell Kramer finished with 120 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Loyal - The Greyhounds were in playoff mode in Week 9, as they beat McDonell Central to clinch a postseason spot. Often we see teams with that mindset carry it over to the playoffs, and that's exactly what the team did in scoring a 28-6 upset win over 3rd-seeded Eleva-Strum. Ryley Fischer went for 133 yards and a touchdown on the ground, and caught a 10-yard score as well. They'll look to keep things going in Level 2 against an Owen-Withee squad lost to 15-0 back in Week 2.

Spencer/Columbus Catholic - The Spencer/Columbus Catholic co-op made the nearly 150 miles road trip down to Columbus Friday night and did not treat their hosts very well, jumping out to a 22-3 lead at halftime before holding on for a 22-17 victory. Neither team was especially effective on offense, but Spencer/Columbus Catholic had a big play in the passing game on a 72-yard touchdown from Calvin Lenz to Mitch Susa, and got a defensive score when Noah Zastrow returned an interception for a touchdown a few minutes later in the first half, as all 22 points came in a span of less than 5 minutes of game time.

Waterford - The Wolverines' defense has been their strength all year, and the offense has come around the second half of the season, and they got enough from both sides of the ball to secure a 21-14 win over 3rd-seeded South Milwaukee on Friday. Despite a pair of interceptions, Waterford quarterback Dylan Malecki threw for three second-half touchdowns to rally the Wolverines from a 14-0 halftime deficit. In Level 2, they'll move on to face Waukesha West, the team that has eliminated them from the playoffs the last two seasons.

Whitefish Bay - When the playoff seedings came out last week, one of the complaints was the 4-seed received by VFA-South champion Oshkosh North, who's only loss on the year was to Kimberly. The Spartans were seeded behind three teams from the North Shore Conference, and had to play another NSC team Whitefish Bay in Level 1. Bay lost to all three of those North Shore teams, but played them tough. It was expected to be a good game between Oshkosh North and Whitefish Bay, but it's doubtful many would have predicted the Blue Dukes to score a 28-0 win, as they rolled up 293 rushing yards in a balanced attack. Whitefish Bay gets Homestead in Level 2, a team they narrowly lost to in Week 9, 16-10.
