Air National Guard Week 2 Player of the Week Nominees:

Jake Benzing, Delavan-Darien - Delavan-Darien found itself in a bit of a shootout with Big Foot last Friday, but the Comets ultimately had the bigger weapons, including junior quarterback Jake Benzing. He was responsible for all six touchdowns as Delavan-Darien pulled away for a 41-28 victory. For the game, Benzing completed 26 of 33 passes for 402 yards and 4 touchdowns, including 3 first half scores. He also added 16 carries for 80 yards and 2 more touchdowns as the Comets moved to 2-0 on the season.

Garrett Groshek, Amherst - #1 vs. #1. The anticipation for Saturday afternoon's Amherst (D5) vs. Saint Mary's Springs (D6) game was high, but Groshek quickly put to rest any questions about who was the better team on this day. He hooked up with Josh Cisewski for a beautiful 45-yard touchdown pass just over two minutes into the game, and orchestrated the spread attack to a 39-14 Amherst victory. He completed 7 of 14 passes for 129 yards and a touchdown, adding 14 carries for 148 yards and 2 scores on the ground.

Josh Karfonta, Catholic Memorial - We knew the Crusaders would be good, after all, they were ranked #1 in Division 3 in our Spring Football Rankings and in the first WisSports.net Coaches Poll of the season. However, the 2-0 start, including a 28-0 shutout of Germantown Friday night, has them as one of the top teams in the entire state regardless of division. On a poor weather night when the passing game was a bit off, Karfonta came up big throughout the game, rushing 16 times for 174 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He opened the scoring with a 4-yard plunge late in the first quarter, and closed it out on a 33-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth.

Noah Severin, Xavier - In tough weather conditions and against a very good Seymour defense, the Xavier offense struggled, posting just 115 total yards. Thankfully, the Hawks defense came to the rescue, limiting Seymour to 125 yards. Severin, one of 11 senior starters, picked off three Thunder passes, returning two of them for touchdowns. The first came in the second quarter to give Xavier a 16-0 lead, while the final score put the Hawks up 24-0 in the fourth quarter.

Josh Weiss, Cedar Grove-Belgium - It was a roller-coaster week for Cedar Grove-Belgium, who found out that they were forced to forfeit a Week 1 win over Kohler/Sheboygan Christian/Lutheran, then had to face rival Ozaukee, the #4 team in Division 6, Friday night. The Rockets pulled away late in the game for a 27-8 win, thanks in large part to Weiss. The junior completed 15 of 25 passes for 285 yards and 3 touchdowns, adding a late two-point conversion pass as well.
