WSN Senior Baseball Awards: Outfielder Finalists
Wisconsin Sports Network is proud to showcase the WSN Senior Baseball Awards presented by Easton.
The pre-season watch list has been trimmed down to five finalists. Winners are announced the week of the spring baseball state tournament.
WSN Senior Baseball Awards -- Outfielder Finalists:
Justus Benson, Sun Prairie -- Benson was a First Team All-Conference pick for the Cardinals and head coach Rob Hamilton, hitting .362. The senior centerfielder had seven extra-base hits this season, with 13 walks as well.
Ben Carew, Kimberly -- A returning Second Team All-State selection, Carew was brilliant once again this season. He hit .443 in the tough FVA, with 4 home runs and 27 RBI. He drew 17 talks and stole 10 bases in helping the Papermakers to the state tournament.
Johnny Duranso, Arrowhead -- Part of a loaded Warhawks team the last two years, Duranso is a returning First Team All-State selection that hit .435 as a senior with a team-best 16 walks. Also a three-year starting quarterback, the two-sport standout will head to UW-Oshkosh to play both sports next season.
Tyler Nelson, Saint Mary Catholic -- The Zephyrs are undefeated heading into the WIAA State Tournament, as Nelson has been a catalyst of the offense all season. He hit .486 this year, with a .628 slugging percentage. The senior outfielder scored 43 runs, while stealing 32 bases.
Nick Winter, Milwaukee Lutheran -- One of the top two-way players in the state, Winter could have been a finalist in the Pitcher category as well, going 9-1 with a 0.83 ERA and 108 strikeouts for the defending Division 2 state champions. At the plate, he leads the state in hits with 51, batting a cool .515 with 1.253 OPS. The UW-Milwaukee recruit has added 23 steals for good measure.
