Week 1 WisSports.net Boys Basketball Coaches Poll

Division 1

Three-time defending champion Stevens Point is the strong favorite in the first poll of the year, though the Panthers got quite a scare to open the season, needing overtime to beat Rhinelander 79-69. Oshkosh North is second, while Brookfield Central, Sun Prairie, and Waunakee round out the top five.

Division 2

Many of the top teams have yet to play their first game, but that will change this week. In the first D2 poll of the year, Kaukauna leads the way, followed by defending champion La Crosse Central. Milwaukee Washington is ranked third despite an early one-point loss to Brown Deer, as the Purgolders are one of three teams in the rankings with a loss, including #7 Whitnall and #8 Cedarburg.

Division 3

Defending champion Xavier went unbeaten last season and the Hawks are 2-0 to start the season. After a year in Division 2, Brown Deer drops back to D3, and is off to an exciting start to the season, defeating highly-regarded Milwaukee Washington 97-96 last Friday. Martin Luther, who suffered a defeat against Destiny, is third, followed by Waupun and G-E-T.

Division 4

Defending state champion Destiny is #1 to start the season, as the Eagles opened the year with an impressive victory over Martin Luther. The Prairie School is second, followed by Mineral Point, Howards Grove, and New Glarus.

Division 5

Last year's state title game participants, champion Barneveld and runner-up Shullsburg, are a combined 0-3 to begin 2017-18, allowing some new faces to move to the top. Bangor, fresh off a state championship in football, is the top-ranked team, while the Black Hawk Warriors, runners-up in football to Bangor, is third. McDonell Central is second.
