Many high school football standouts in Wisconsin go on to big things at the college level and in the pros, and this is our spot to recognize those athletes each week and help you keep up with what is going down on some of your favorite players from the past. If you have alumni news, please send it to Colton Wilson by 10 p.m. on Tuesdays.

Alumni Update

Last week we had a jam-packed edition of the Football Alumni Round-up, looking back on the previous three weeks of football from alumni around the country. This week, we focus on the past week’s worth of games and highlight those alumni crushing it on the gridiron.

No sense in beating around the bush, the Wisconsin Badgers handled previously unbeaten and eleventh-ranked Michigan in a 35-14 shellacking at Camp Randall this past Saturday. The defense was stellar once again and is scattered with many former alums. One of those alums, Zack Baun, was an incredible quarterback at Brown Deer High School winning the Dave Krieg Award for the state’s best quarterback in 2014. For the Badgers, Baun has been a terror on opposing quarterbacks this season, playing outside linebacker. In the win over Michigan, Baun helped stifle the Wolverine offense by recording seven tackles, two for loss, as well as having a sack and a forced fumble.

In sticking with the terror in the opposing team’s backfield, look no further than Concordia St. Paul’s Chris Garrett. Garrett a Wisconsin Lutheran High School alum, led all of Division 2 football last year with 16.5 sacks. This year has been no different. Despite a 29-3 loss to Minnesota State-Mankato, Chris recorded his fourth sack already this season in only three games.

On the other side of the ball, Sioux Falls has a stellar offensive line keeping opposing pass rushers away from the quarterback and paving rushing lanes for the offense. In a 51-7 win over Southwest Minnesota State, the line helped the offense to 358 rushing yards and 564 total yards. That line consists of former alumni Elijah Perine of Homestead, Noaln Kern of Regis, and Nick Zimmerman of Laconia. All three are three-year starters on the offensive line, with Kern receiving Northern Sun All-Conference first team honors last year, and Zimmerman garnering Honorable Mention.

In other Northern Sun Conference play, former Brookfield East running back Sam Santiago-Lloyd rushed for 131 yards and a score as Winona State shut out Upper Iowa 28-0. Sam also threw for a score in the game. The stellar defensive performance was led by Nick Pridgeon of Wauwatosa East with a team high seven tackles, and a forced fumble. Chris Adams, also of Wauwatosa East, added two sacks and Clay Schueffner of St. Mary’s Springs had an interception.

The Houston Texans played the Los Angeles Chargers this past Sunday, which meant a Pewaukee High School, Watt brother, reunion. However, despite J.J.’s two sacks for the Texans, and Derek’s stellar fullback play for the Chargers, another former alumni is the story. Ashwaubenon’s Max Scharping was a second round pick this past April, taken fifty-fifth overall. On Sunday, Max earned his first start on the offensive line for the Texans.

WIAC teams are just two weeks out of conference play and many are already in midseason form.

UW-Whitewater who lost in the Division 3 semi-finals last season, is ranked third in the nation early on in the year. This past weekend they beat NAIA, fifth-ranked, Saint Xavier 28-20. Max Meylor, a Lindenwood transfer, and Mount Horeb High School grad, threw for 207 yards and two scores to lead the offense. Defensively, Kaleb Kaminski was a tackling machine, recording a game high 17 tackles. Kaleb was named the WIAC Defensive Player of the Week for his tenacious performance.

UW-Oshkosh, just three years removed from a national championship runner-up, blew out Huntington this past week 44-14. Kobe Berghammer, formerly of Cumberland, had seen extended action at quarterback in the previous two games, but had not registered a start. Last Saturday he got his first start and was sensational. He completed 20 of 22 passes (91% completion) for 226 yards and three scores, adding another touchdown on the ground. Kobe was named the WIAC Offensive Player of the Week for his outstanding first start.

Ashwaubenon alum James Morgan has had an up and down collegiate career, transferring from Bowling Green College to Florida International, where he seems to have found his footing. Last year, James was named the Conference USA’s Newcomer of the Year. This past weekend, despite a 43-31 loss to Louisiana Tech, Morgan threw for 394 yards and two scores; rushing for another.

Carthage College registered a convincing 36-7 win over Carroll College in CCIW (College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin). David Collins of Pewaukee continually flipped the field, averaging 43 yards per punt, and connected on all three of his point after touchdowns for Carthage. His play garnered him CCIW Specials Teams Player of the Week honors.
