WisSports.net Level 1 Player of the Week Nominees

Joey Giorgi, Grafton

The state's leading rusher continued his huge senior season with a workman-like performance as Joey Giorgi helped Grafton past fourth-seeded Ashwaubenon on the road. Carrying the ball 41 times, he racked up 247 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, but wasn't done there. The senior halfback caught four passes for 41 yards and a touchdown in the 49-24 victory.

Brett Holden, Holmen

Holmen went on the road and dominated fourth-seeded Watertown 36-10 on Friday. The Vikings ground game was too much for the Goslings, rolling up 353 yards and five touchdowns. Most of the damage was done by senior Brett Holden, who ran for 262 yards and three touchdowns on 28 carries, an average of 9.4 yards per attempt.

Evan Lau, Hilbert

Undefeated and top-seeded Hilbert was pushed by Rosholt in a Level 1 playoff game, but despite a couple late Hornets touchdowns, the Wolves still held on for a two-score win, 49-35. Evan Lau only carried the ball 14 times, but put up a state-best 301 rushing yards with four scores on the ground. His touchdowns covered 13, 82, 68, and 7 yards. An outstanding two-way player, he also returned a fumble 50 yard for the game's first score and added 12 tackles on defense.

Justin Swanson, Johnson Creek

Johnson Creek finished 7-2 in the regular season, but playing in a smaller league, the Bluejays were pushed down the seeding a bit, earning a six, taking on third-seeded Winnebago Lutheran. The Crick went down 7-6 in the first quarter but scored 20 straight points after that to help secure a 26-19 victory. Quarterback Justin Swanson was highly efficient, posting a perfect passer rating of 158.3 by completing 12-of-15 passes for 233 yards and three touchdowns. He'd add a team-high 59 rushing yards as well.

Lane Wieczorek, Pepin/Alma Eagles

Pepin/Alma was the lower-seeded road team on Friday, but you wouldn't have known it by how the game went against Eleva-Strum. After Eleva-Strum pulled within 8-7 midway through the first quarter, Pepin/Alma scored the next 37 points, finishing with a running clock 45-13 victory. Junior running back Lane Wieczorek was responsible for all of the Eagle's touchdowns, carrying the ball 30 times for 172 yards and six rushing scores. He added a six-yard reception, a 17-yard kick return, and a team-high nine tackles on defense as well.
