Many high school basketball standouts in Wisconsin go on to big things at the college level and in the pros, and this is our spot to recognize those athletes each week and help you keep up with what is going down on some of your favorite players from the past. If you have alumni news, please send it to Colton Wilson by 6 p.m. on Mondays

Alumni Update

Mother nature is beginning to rear her ugly head in the state of Wisconsin. The snow and ice have begun to effect the winter sports season schedule as cancellations and postponements continue to pop up. As high school athletes have their schedules re-organized, college and professional athletes from the Badger State continue to excel on the hardwood.

The Golden State Warriors have fallen to cellar of the NBA in quick fashion. After appearing in three of the past five NBA Finals, an offseason of injuries and departures of All-Stars, the Warriors currently have the worst record in the NBA. Former Milwaukee King and rookie standout Jordan Poole is taking advantage of his minutes on the floor. The twenty-eighth pick in this past year’s draft, Poole scored a career high 21 points as the Warriors topped the Orlando Magic 109-95.

The Northern Sun Conference was filled with big performances from former alumni across the weekend.

Minnesota Crookston has been mentioned multiple times as Oak Creek grad Harrison Cleary has put up gaudy numbers scoring the past four years. Teammate and La Crosse Logan alum Chase Johnson doesn’t get all the headlines, but does the dirty work off the bench. Despite an 80-66 loss to Winona State, Chase scored a season high 13 points while hauling down six rebounds.

Bemidji State took down Upper Iowa 105-93 as a trio of former alumni contributed greatly across the board. Unity High School’s Logan Bader put up a huge double-double, scoring 21 points and hauling in 17 rebounds. G-E-T’s Nick Wagner added 20 points, six rebounds, and seven assists, while Keawaunee’s Zach Baumgartner had nine points and eight rebounds.

Drew Blair and Brandon Myer continue to put up ridiculous numbers for Minnesota-Duluth. Blair, a Stevens Point grad, and Myer, a Superior grad, each scored 30 plus points in a 101-92 win over Concordia-St. Paul. Drew shot nine of eleven from the field and made all 12 free throw attempts. Brandon shot eight of fifteen from the field and connected on all 11 of his shots from the charity stripe.

UW-Green Bay took down Detroit Mercy 83-80 as Cody Schwartz continues to inject life in the team since his insertion in the starting lineup. The West De Pere grad had 15 points and five rebounds to aid his team to a win. His most important shot came with 42 seconds left. With the Phoenix leading by two, Cody hit a three pointer, putting the team up five and locking down the win.

Marshfield High School alum Adam Fravert continues to tear up the WIAC this season. Already having surpassed the 1,000 point mark this season, Adam has constantly put up big numbers. In an 82-66 win over UW-Eau Claire, Adam scored 28 points and hauled in seven rebounds. He followed that up with 19 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists in the 89-62 win over UW-River Falls. Adam’s efficiency on the court led to him being named the WIAC Player of the Week.

Tyree Eady was an integral piece of the puzzle as North Dakota State squeaked out a win over South Dakota 72-70. Eady, a Middleton grad, scored 18 points on seven of eleven shooting, and grabbed three rebounds to lead the Bison.

In other Summit League play, Alou Dillon took advantage of expanded playing time in South Dakota State’s 87-66 win over North Dakota. The Wauwatosa West grad scored a season high 12 points in the win. Alou connected on six of the seven shots he took from the field.

Viterbo University took home a pair of victories this past week as Tyree Young filled the stat sheets. Tyree, a Nicolet High School grad, scored 30 points, hauled in five rebounds, and dished out six assists in a 92-83 win over Dickinson State. He followed that up with 25 points and seven rebounds in a 76-63 win over Valley City State. Tyree was named the North Star Athletic Association Player of the Week for his stellar play on the court.

In other NAIA play, Brandon Keller recorded back-to-back double-doubles for Concordia-Wisconsin. The Plymouth High School grad had 18 points and 10 rebounds in an 83-67 win over Concordia-Chicago. Brandon followed that up with 15 points and 10 rebounds in an 82-75 win over Aurora College.

Ripon College continues to get great contributions from many in-state alumni, which was apparent in their 91-64 win over Illinois College. Ryan Steffes (New Holstein), Seth Kostroski (Sauk Prairie), Jaylen Mahone (Laconia), Justin Bartol (Berlin), and Trent Jones (Dodgeville) all scored in double figures. Jones has been a steady scoring force for the Red Hawks the last four years and in their win, surpassed the 1,000 point mark in his career.

Despite an 86-71 loss to Northern Iowa, Bradley University’s Danya Kingsby had a career day. The Milwaukee Hamilton alum scored a season high 28 points on 11 of 17 shooting. Danya also dished out fives assists in the win.
