Peyton Rogers-Schmidt
Chippewa Falls won its sixth straight game and executed a huge push forward to the eventual championship in the Big Rivers Conference with an exciting 59-56 win over visiting River Falls on February 17.
Senior Peyton Rogers-Schmidt (6-6) buried a baseline three-point shot in front of the Cardinals' bench in the closing seconds of the contest to help Chippewa Falls defeat one of its top challengers in the Big Rivers.
The win over River Falls moved Chippewa Falls into first place in the league standings and one game away from clinching at least a share of the league title. The Cardinals later won their first outright Big Rivers crown since 1980 with a victory over Menomonie.
Rogers-Schmidt had an excellent all-around game for Chippewa Falls as he made five three-point shots, scored 27 points, hauled down nine rebounds and dished out three assists.
Junior Joe Reuter (6-4) also played well for coach Jason Proue and the Cardinals. He finished with 12 points and five assists, including the pass that led Rogers-Schmidt's game winner. Senior Nick Bruder (6-2) contributed 10 points and seven rebounds in the Cardinals' big win.
Juniors Zac Johnson (6-3) and JT Dougherty (6-9) finished with 15 and 13 points, respectively, to lead River Falls.
Chippewa Falls completed its season with a 19-6 record after falling to Neenah by two points in a WIAA Division 1 sectional semifinal contest while River Falls ended at 18-6 after losing to Onalaska in a Division 2 regional final.
