WisSports.net Week 1 Player of the Week Nominees

Alex Current, Muskego

Alex Current has rushed for more than 1500 yards while averaging better than 13 yards per carry the last two years as Muskego has won back-to-back state championships. He proved very quickly that his senior year is going to be another special one. On his very first carry of the season, he went 79 yards for a touchdown against Arrowhead, then ran 70 yards for a second on his second carry. He'd keep it up all game even in limited opportunities, finishing with 230 yards and five touchdowns on just eight carries as the Warriors topped Arrowhead 32-24 in a Classic Eight showdown.

Tanner Marsh, Mondovi

Mondovi had perhaps the best season in school history in 2019, advancing to the state semi-finals. The Buffaloes have to replace 15 starting spots from a year ago, but senior Tanner Marsh is one of the returnees. A two-time All-Conference choice who has gone over 1000 rushing yards each of the past two seasons, he opened with a huge Week 1 performance. In a 48-20 win over Osseo-Fairchild in the team's first game as a member of the Cloverbelt Conference, Marsh carried it 31 times for 321 yards and four touchdowns, with a pair of fourth quarter scores helping put the game away. He added three catches for 17 yards plus a sack and forced fumble on defense.

Tanner Opsal, McDonell Central

McDonell Central is nationally known for its passing attack going back several decades, with the 1980's Macks setting a number of national records. The focus has shifted this year as the team continues to try to find its way in 8-Player football. It is still focused on the quarterback, but now Tanner Opsal is making more noise with his legs than arm. Opsal carried the ball 49 times for 309 yards and three touchdowns as McDonell Central topped Alma Center Lincoln 46-20. He did make an impact throwing the ball as well, however, tossing three touchdowns among his five completions, with 58 passing yards.

J.J. Seidl, Menomonee Falls

Menomonee Falls got big contributions from returning offensive standouts Nate McLean as well as Quentin and Evan Redding, but the biggest play came down to the defense. That's where J.J. Seidl stepped in (literally), filling the gap on a potential game-winning two-point conversion try by Brookfield Central with 27 seconds remaining in the game to preserve a 21-20 Falls victory. It certainly wasn't his only big play, however, as he recorded nine tackles, including a pair of sacks in the showdown between last year's Greater Metro Conference co-champs.

Jon Verhasselt, Freedom

Jon Verhasselt was all over the field in a 48-14 win over Winneconne on Friday night. He ran for 99 yards and three touchdowns on ten carries, caught two passes for 21 yards, recorded five tackles, and return a kickoff for an 85 yard touchdown.
