Looking Back

We're just two weeks into the spring football season, and only two unbeaten teams remain in eight-player football. Of course, there are only ten teams playing the eight-player game this spring, but the point remains regardless.

There were only three games on last week's docket, all on Thursday, and in somewhat unusual fashion for 8-player, all were competitive.

Kickapoo/La Farge played its first game of the season at Wonewoc/Weston, scoring a 48-34 victory over the previously fifth-ranked Silver Wolves. The Predators got a big performance from quarterback Spencer Vanek, who threw for 54 yards but carries it nine times for 139 yards and three touchdowns. He added an 80-yard touchdown on the opening kickoff, and had another kick return score wiped out by penalty.

Oakfield won a shootout over Sturgeon Bay, 64-52, rebounding from an opening loss against Wisconsin Heights. The Oaks racked up 541 yards of offense in the game, as Grant Bass and Jack Fox combined for 316 rushing yards, with Bass adding 154 yards and a touchdown passing.

Also, Chequamegon was a 28-20 victor over previously third-ranked Green Bay NEW Lutheran/Oneida/Providence, but unfortunately the Screaming Eagles have not entered any stats information.

Unfortunately we also got word that the Washburn 8-player team would not be competing this spring after initially moving from the fall to the spring option.

Looking Ahead

Five games are scheduled for this week, a nice expansion after just four games in Week 1 and three last week.

Both Green Bay NEW Lutheran/Oneida/providence and Sturgeon Bay dropped games last week and slid in the polls, and one of them will get back on track this week, while the other will drop a second straight.

Wisconsin Heights is the top-ranked 8-player team, though the Vanguards did not have a game last week. They'll get back at it at Wonewoc/Weston on Friday, as the Silver Wolves are looking to rebound after a tough loss against Kickapoo/La Farge. Speaking of the Predators, KLF hosts rival North Crawford this week.

A pair of games are on tap Saturday, with Gibraltar at Oakfield and Chequamegon welcoming in Sevastopol.

Star of the Week: Spencer Vanek, Kickapoo/La Farge

Spencer Vanek returned the opening kickoff 80-yards for a touchdown, setting the stage for a big game in Kickapoo/La Farge's first game of the year, a 48-34 win at Wonewoc/Weston. Also the team's quarterback, he completed six-of-ten passes for 54 yards, adding 139 yards and three scores on nine rush attempts. He was also a key part of the defense and had another kick return touchdown wiped out by penalty as the Predators moved into fourth in the WSN Coaches Poll following the win.
