The Teams

DeForest was the preseason favorite in the Badger-East, Northeast Pod, as all five starters are back from a team that advanced to the Division 1 state tournament last season. The Norskies have lived up to the billing so far, starting the year 4-0 and ranked third in Division 2 as senior Northern Michigan recruit Max Weisbrod averages 25 points per game.

La Crosse Central is off to a 3-1 start, with the only loss of the season coming against perennial Minnesota powerhouse Benilde-St. Margaret's, though the RiverHawks remain sixth in the latest Division 2 WSN Coaches Poll. Pegged as the preseason favorites in the Mississippi Valley Conference coming into the season by Mark Miller and the Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook, Central is a very experienced team with all five starters back from a year ago, led by senior point guard Devon Fielding.

Madison La Follette is 2-0 on the young season and ranked fifth in D1, coming off a big win over rival Madison Memorial on Friday, as Arhman Lewis had a game-high 21 points. While the Lancers did not play last year due to MMSD guidelines around the pandemic, head coach Curtrel Robinson has a talented group that is expected to challenge for the title in the Big Eight Conference.

Yorkville Christian (IL) is a top-level program in Illinois, featuring one of the country's top shooters and scorers in senior Jaden Schutt. The 6'5" senior gave a commitment to Duke last month and is averaging 29 points per game, but he's not the only talented player on the state title favorites. KJ Vasser, another senior, is averaging 22 points, while junior David Douglas, Jr. is averaging just shy of 20 per game.
