Trio of wrestlers make history as four-time state champions at WIAA Individual Championships

Three athletes joined exclusive company as four-time state champions at the 2022 WIAA Individual Wrestling State Tournament on Saturday.

The 79th WIAA Individual Meet saw 42 wrestlers earn titles as the tournament returned to the Kohl Center in Madison after being adjusted last year due to the COVID pandemic.

Oconto Falls senior Clayton Whiting captured the Division 2 title at 182 pounds, as he also won at 182 pounds last year with titles at 152 pounds in 2019 and 170 pounds in 2020.

Tanner Gerber of Cameron earned his fourth career state title in the Division 3, 132-pound bracket. He was a state champ at 106 pounds in 2019, 113 pounds in 2020, and 126 pounds in 2021.

Saint Croix Falls senior Kole Marko captured the Division 3 crown at 160 pounds, as he also won at 138 pounds in 2019, 145 pounds in 2020, and 152 pounds in 2021. His older brother, Hunter Marko, was also a four-time state champion at Amery.

Other four-time state champions in WIAA history include: Matt Hanutke of Pittsville, Kraig Underwood of Athens, Brian Slater of New Lisbon, Scott Hady of North Crawford, Kevin Black of River Falls, Josh Miller of Arcadia, Cole Wunnicke of Ithaca, Bobby Wunnicke of Dodgeville, Zac Cibula of Luxemburg-Casco, Nick Hagar of Tomahawk, Jesse Thielke of Germantown, Jarod Donar of Cuba City/Southwestern, Jens Lantz of Ellsworth, Hunter Marko of Amery, Jeremy Schoenherr of Stratford, Sam Stuhl of Prescott and Ellsworth, Brock Schlough of Boyceville, Keegan O'Toole of Arrowhead and Matty Bianchi of Two Rivers.

Of the 23 former state champions entering the 2022 WIAA state meet, 16 of them earned another championship medal.
