Senior Girls Basketball Awards: Wing Finalists

Wisconsin Sports Network is proud to showcase the WSN High School Basketball Awards.

The finalists for the top senior wing have been selected. The winner will be announced the week after the state tournament. 


Nakiyah Hurst of Milwaukee Academy of Science

Nakiyah Hurst, 6-0, Milwaukee Academy of Science -- Hurst led the Lady Novas to a 20-3 record and a Division 4 regional final appearance, dropping a 56-52 contest versus Racine Lutheran. The NCAA Division I University of North Dakota signee averaged 20.2 points, 11.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 3.1 steals, and 2.3 blocks per game for coach Giovanni Riley and the Lady Novas. She scored a season-high 31 points in a win over D3 state qualifier Dominican. Hurst, who finished her career with over 1,100 career points, helped MAS reach the Division 4 state tournament as a freshman. 

Emily LaChapell, 5-11, Appleton East -- LaChapell has led the Patriots to their first state tournament appearance since 1998. The NCAA Division I Marquette University signee is averaging 20.6 points, 7.1 rebounds, 5.2 assists, and 2.0 steals per game for coach and father Joe LaChapell and the 24-4 Patriots. LaChapell scored a school-record 50 points in a win over Appleton West in January. She has compiled 1,839 points in her career entering the Patriots D1 state semifinal versus Brookfield East. 

Grace Lomen, 5-9, Catholic Memorial -- Lomen led the Crusaders to a Division 3 regional final, falling to Lake Mills (53-50), and finishing the year with a 14-11 record. The NCAA Division II UW-Parkside signee averaged 20.7 points, 10.9 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 3.7 steals, and 1.7 blocks per game for coach Nick Vitale and the Crusaders. Lomen scored a career-best 37 points in a victory over Oconomowoc in December. She finished her career with 1,343 points. 

Sarah Newcomer, 5-10, Pewaukee -- Newcomer has helped lead the Pirates to their second state tournament appearance in program history. The NCAA Division II Northern Michigan University signee is averaging 15.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 2.2 steals per game for coach Jim Reuter and the 25-3 Pirates. Newcomer has connected on 71 three-pointers this season while shooting over 40 percent from deep. She netted a career-best 25 points in wins over Wisconsin Lutheran and Greenfield this season. Newcomer enters Pewaukee's state semifinal against Reedsburg with 1,029 career points. 

Mahra Wieman, 5-10, Reedsburg -- Wieman has led the Beavers to their second consecutive state tournament appearance. The NCAA Division III UW-Oshkosh commit is averaging 23.3 points per game for coach Mark Simon and the undefeated Beavers. Mahra scored a school-record 39 points in a win over McFarland in a D2 regional final. Wieman, a D2 WBCA all-state pick last season, has 1,755 career points entering Reedsburg's Division 2 state semifinal versus Pewaukee.
