Coello was on point all weekend as Catholic Memorial captured the WIAA Boys Volleyball State Championship. In a 3-1 quarterfinal win over Middleton, the junior outside hitter had 17 kills, 12 digs, three aces and a block. He followed that up with 29 kills, nine digs and two blocks in a 3-2 win over Marquette in the semifinals. Coello finished his state tournament up with 11 kills, five digs, one assist and one block in a 3-0 sweep of Arrowhead in the Championship. Coello had a hitting accuracy of around 35% through the three matches.
Czajkowski set her teammates up for success all weekend and it led to DSHA capturing the Division 1 State Championship in girls volleyball. In a 3-0 sweep of Middleton in the Division 1 quarterfinals, the sophomore setter had 37 assists, six digs, two aces, two kills and one block. She added 22 assists, five digs, three blocks, one kill and one ace in a 3-0 sweep of Appleton North in the semifinals. Czajkowski saved her best for last, and it was much needed in the championship showdown with Oconomowoc. She tallied 50 assists, 16 digs, four blocks and a single kill as DSHA outlasted Oconomowoc 3-2 to capture gold.
The Howards Grove girls volleyball team was on a mission to capture the program's fourth straight and Damrow led the way. The senior hitter had 17 kills on 50% hitting accuracy in a 3-0 sweep of Wittenberg-Birnamwood in the semifinals. Damrow followed that up with 15 kills, 20 digs and two aces as the Tigers swept St. Croix Falls in the WIAA Division 3 State Championship. Howards Grove won its fourth straight WIAA State title.
The Verona boys soccer team won its second state championship in four seasons this past weekend and Gage led the way for the Wildcats. In a 4-3 win over Sussex Hamilton in the semifinals, the junior forward netted a goal and assisted on another. Verona then squared off with Marquette in the Division 1 State title match. Tied 1-1 in the 57th minute, Gage lined up for a free kick and put it past the goalkeeper, scoring the decisive goal in the 2-1 win.
The Oregon boys soccer team came into this season poised to defend its WIAA Division 2 State Championship, and did just that this past weekend. Malcook put the pressure on the opposing defenses consistently in the two matches. In the 3-2 win over Waukesha West in the semifinals, Malcook netted one goal on four shots. Despite not scoring in regulation against Whitefish Bay in the Division 2 Championship match, Malcook attempted four shots, pressuring the Blue Devils defense. Tied 1-1 after two overtimes, Oregon and Whitefish Bay went into a shootout. Malcook scored on his goal attempt as Oregon won the shootout 8-7 to capture its second straight Division 1 title.
