Recap of the 2023 WIAA State Softball Tournament

The 47th annual Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association State Softball Tournament was held from Thursday through Saturday at Goodman Diamond in Madison. 

Kaukauna, Freedom, Brodhead, Iola-Scandinavia, and Pacelli took home the gold ball in their respective divisions. 

Division 1

The Kaukauna softball team captured its third consecutive WIAA Division 1 state championship on Saturday when they defeated previously unbeaten Superior, 4-0 in the title game. 

The Galloping Ghosts finish the year with a 31-0 record and will enter the 2024 season with an 81-game winning streak. 

Sophomore phenom Karly Meredith earned the win in the circle, tallying four strikeouts while allowing five hits and issuing one walk in the victory. At the plate, she went 1-for-2 with two RBIs. 

Senior Kally Meredith (1-for-2 with a walk) scored three of the four runs for coach Tim Roehrig and the Galloping Ghosts. 

The Galloping Ghosts are the sixth team to three-peat as WIAA state champion, joining Stevens Point (four straight; 2001-04), Laconia (2015-17), Ashwaubenon (1992-94), Loyal (1978-80), and Marion (1990-92). 

Superior finishes the year with a 27-1 record.

Senior Haley Zembo pitched a complete game in the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits while striking out four and issuing two walks.

Division 2

The Freedom softball repeated as WIAA Division 2 state champions, beating New London, 8-0, in the title game at Goodman Diamond. 

The Irish finish the 2023 season with a 28-2 record. 

Freedom collected 11 hits in the victory with Rylie Murphy (senior), Kaia McVay (sophomore), and Rachel Koss (senior) each finishing with two hits. 

Koss scored twice and added two RBIs. Senior Lauren Scheibe also drove in a pair of runs for coach Tim Dietzen and the Irish. 

New London ends the year with a 19-7 record.

Division 3

The Brodhead softball team topped Mayville, 1-0, in eight innings to claim the WIAA Division 3 state championship. 

The Cardinals finish the 2023 season with a 27-2 record. Senior Mckenna Young earned the victory, striking out 16, allowing just two hits, and issuing one walk.

The contest's only run was a scored in the bottom of the eighth inning on a double by junior Jerrica Schwartz that scored senior Taetum Hoesly from second base. 

Hoesly collected three hits while freshman Allie Dahl also had a pair of hits for coach Steve Krupke and the Cardinals. 

Mayville sophomore Allie Schwirtz allowed one run on nine hits in the loss. The Cardinals end the year with a 20-5 record.

Division 4

The Iola-Scandinavia softball squad won the program's first-ever state title, defeating Waterloo, 10-6, in the WIAA Division 4 state championship game. 

The Thunderbirds scored seven runs in the top of the seventh inning to overcome a 6-3 deficit after six innings to earn the victory. 

Freshman Brooklyn Berrens hit the go-ahead inside the park grand slam. 

Junior Maddie Much earned the win, pitching a complete game. At the plate, she went 5-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored for coach Tom Anderson and the Thunderbirds. 

Iola-Scandinavia also got three hits a piece from senior Clara Koles and freshman Ava Printz. 

Waterloo ends the year with a 16-6 record.

Division 5

The Pacelli softball team won the WIAA Division 5 state championship, edging Oakfield, 9-6, in the title game. 

The Cardinals, which finish the year with a 28-1 record, scored eight of their runs in the first three innings en route to the victory. 

Katy Ilkka (sophomore), Sydney Gavin (senior), Hannah Trzinski (junior), and Kaylin Yenter (sophomore) all collected two hits in the contest. 

Trzinski, who pitched the first five innings and picked up the win, drove in four runs. Yenter added two RBIs while Gavin scored three times for coach Ann Molski and the Cardinals. 

Oakfield got three hits from junior Savannah Tapp while fellow junior Alyvia Robinson led the squad with two RBIs. The Oaks end the year with a 25-4 record.
