Four Champions Crowned at the 2023 WIAA State Baseball Tournament

The 75th Annual Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Baseball State Tournament will take place Monday-Thursday, June 12-15, at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute, Wis.

Division 1

The Whitefish Bay baseball won the first ever state championship in the program's history on Thursday, defeating second-seeded Hortonville in the Division 1 title game 5-1.

The Blue Dukes knocked off four-seed Menomonee Falls 7-5 in extras, top-seed Stevens Point 17-0 in five innings and then Hortonville, finishing the season 25-7 and winning the last game of the 2023 high school baseball season.

Junior pitcher Tyler Andrews pitched six and two-thirds innings for the Blue Dukes, hitting the 100 pitch count limit with one out to go in the game. Andrews allowed just five hits and one run while striking out six batters in his game-winning start. Freshman Charlie McIntyre came in and got the last out via the strike out to clinch the win.

The two teams were tied after one inning, but a four-run second by Whitefish Bay proved to be the end of the scoring. Michigan commit Jack Counsell had the only extra base hit in the game and scored a run. Alabama commit JD Dix and Austin Weinke finished with two hits and an RBI each.

Kolden Hunter took the loss for Hortonville, pitching just an inning and two-thirds giving up five runs (three earned) on three hits and six walks, struggling with command.

Hortonville finished the season 25-5 and made the state tournament for the first time since 1998.

Division 2

Denmark needed eleven innings to do it, but the Vikings finished a three-peat, defeating St. Thomas More 3-2 in the WIAA Division 2 State Championship.

The Vikings shut out Jefferson 7-0 in the Division 2 semifinals. Denmark's third straight state championship is just the fourth three-peat in WIAA baseball history. The Vikings finished 30-2 on the season.

Denmark and St. Thomas More went into the ninth inning tied 1-1 before Denmark's Kaden Derricks scored on a wild pitch by Sam Mommer to make the lead 2-1. St. Thomas More's Bennett Karolewicz scored via a fielding error to tie the game back up in the bottom of the ninth.

A scoreless tenth frame led to John Wertel singling and later scoring on a throwing error for the game winning run.

Denmark's Ethan Ovsak pitched eight and two-thirds innings, giving up two runs (one earned) and striking out three batters. He held the potent Cavalier offense to just eight hits. Jaycob Dittmer pitched the final two and a third innings of the game, allowing just one hit and striking out one of the seven batters he faced.

St. Thomas More finished the year 27-3 and were runner-up in the program's first trip to the state tournament.

On the mound for the Cavaliers, Sam Mommer pitched the first seven innigns and gave up one earned run on seven hits. Elijah Niemiec was the losing pitcher on record, giving up just one hit, two runs (one earned), and striking out seven.

Division 3

Saint Croix Falls got redemption from a regular season finale loss to Aquinas, beating the Blugolds in 3-1 in the WIAA Division 3 State Champoinship.

The Saints won the program's first ever state championship and allowing just one run over the two game tournament, beating Kiel 10-0 in the semifinals.

The Saints ended the season 27-3.

Saint Croix Falls senior Michael Shannon hit a two-run double in the bottom of the second inning giving the Saints a 2-0 lead. Aquinas cut the lead to 2-1 on an RBI single by Waylon Hargrove in the top of the fourth. However, Shannon struck again for the Saints, knocking in a run on a groundout to third in the bottom of that frame.

Dylan Smith went the distance for Saint Croix Falls on the mound, striking out five batters and allowing just one run on four hits.

Aquinas finished the year 24-3 and took home the program's fourth runner-up finish.

Junior Will Deets took the loss on the mound for Aquinas, pitching six innings and giving up three runs (two earned) on just four hits.

Division 4

Ithaca scored eight runs over the last there innings, including a four-run, bottom of the seventh frame to walk-off Pecatonica 8-7 in the Division 4 State Championship game.

The Bulldogs were the epitome of never giving up in a memorable state tournament, resulting in the program's second state title in its history.

Before the incredible comeback in the championship game, Ithaca walked off Edgar 4-3 in nine innings in the semifinals.

Ithaca finished the season 21-7.

Pecatonica used a five run, third inning where Ithaca had two wild pitches, a passed ball and two errors. The Vikings added two more runs in the fifth on three more wild pitches and a error by the Bulldogs, pulling ahead 7-0.

Enter the rally. The Bulldogs got one run in the bottom of the fifth after a hit by pitch and two passed balls allowed Logan Anderson to get Ithaca on the board. RBIs by Micah Salisbury, Anderson and Ethan Cockroft to pul the Bulldogs within 7-3.

A fielding error and wild pitch helped the Bulldogs score four more runs to walk it off in the seventh, culminating in an RBI, walk-off single by Anderson to clinch the title. All four Ithaca runs came with the Bulldogs down to their last out.

On the mound for Ithaca, Micah Salisbury went five innings and gave up seven runs (two earned) with six strikeouts. Lincoln Manning came and was the winning pitcher on record, pitching two scoreless innings in relief.

Pecatonica, the top-seed in the tournament, finished the season 24-2 and runner-up in the program's first trip to state.

Tyler McKeon pitched six innings for the Vikings, allowing five runs on four hits. Coy Ruegsegger took the loss after allowing three runs (one earned) on two-thirds innings pitched.
