Athlete of the Week Nominees: June 12-18

Sammy Clary, Ithaca

Clary was instrumental in Ithaca posting two comeback, walk-off wins and winning the WIAA Baseball Division 4 State Championship. First in the 4-3, nine-inning semifinal win over Edgar, Clary pitched seven shutout innings of relief to earn the win on the mound. He struck out eight batters and allowed just two hits over the seven innings pitched. At the plate he went hitless, but recorded a walk. More importantly, Clary hit the walk-off sac fly RBI in the bottom of the ninth inning to win it. Clary again did not collect a hit in the championship game, but affected it regardless. Down 7-1 in the sixth inning, Clary walked and eventually scored in the frame. In the seventh inning, the Bulldogs were down 7-4. Clary hit a sac fly, driving in the first of four runs that scored to capture the Bulldogs title.

Ethan Ovsak, Denmark

Ovsak was a catalyst for the Denmark baseball team winning its third straight WIAA State Championship. In a 7-0 shutout of Jefferson in the semifinals, the senior outfielder went two of four with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored from the plate. Denmark then squared off with a potent Saint Thomas More offense in the Division 2 title game. He collected just one hit from the plate, but was incredible on the mound. Ovsak pitched eight and two-thirds innings, allowing just two runs (one earned) on eight hits and three strikeouts.

Taylor Schad, Kiel

Schad was relentless on the pitch this past week leading the Kiel girls soccer team to its first ever WIAA State Championship. In the semifinals against Brookfield Academy, the Marquette commit had attempted six shots, scored one and assisted on another in the 3-0 win. She turned it up a notch in a 6-5, double overtime win over Cedar Grove-Belgium in the Division 4 State Championship match. Schad attempted twelve shots (seven on goal). She netted four goals herself and assisted on another. Schad's five goals set a Division 4 State Tournament record and her five goals and two assists set a record for points in a tournament.

Anna Sikorski, Muskego

Sikorski put pressure on the opposing defenses all weekend as Muskego came home with a WIAA Girls Soccer Division 1 State Championship on Saturday. The Kentucky commit scored two goals on eight shots in the 4-0 semifinal win over Bay Port. The senior midfielder then continued her aggressiveness in the championship match with Classic Eight rival Kettle Moraine. Sikorski attempted four shots (two on goal) and netted one in the 3-1 win. It is the third state title in the program's history.

Austin Wienke, Whitefish Bay

Wienke was a tough out last week as the Whitefish Bay baseball team worked through three wins and captured the program's first ever state championship. In a 7-5 quarterfinal win over Menomonee Falls, the Marshall commit went one of four from the plate with an RBI single. He, and the rest of the Blue Dukes offense then exploded in a 17-0 win over Stevens Point. Wienke went four of five with a double, home run, five RBIs and four runs scored. Whitefish Bay then squared off with Hortonville in the Division 1 state championship game. The senior first baseman went two of three with an RBI, walk, run scored and stolen base in the 5-1 championship win. For the week he batted .583 with seven RBIs.
