Calvin Hargrove selected as the 2023 male recipient of the Bug Tussel 3-sport Athlete of the Year

The Bug Tussel Triple Threat Athlete of the Week is an honor given on WisSports.net to the top senior boys and girls three-sport athletes in the state. Calvin Hargrove of Aquinas has been selected as the 2022-23 male recipient of the Pat Richter Award from WisSports.net as the Bug Tussel Three-Sport Athlete of the Year.

Hargrove competed in football, wrestling and baseball for Aquinas and achieved huge success in all three sports. 

In football, the 5-foot-8, 170-pound linebacker/running back helped Aquinas to WIAA state championships in 2021 and 2022. A two-time all-region and all-conference pick at linebacker, Hargrove earned first-team all-state honors as an all-purpose player as a senior. He finished as the leading tackler for the Aquinas defense and also rushed for 826 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2022. 

In wrestling, Hargrove qualified for the WIAA State Meet three times. He finished fifth as a junior and qualified for the semifinals at 160 pounds as a senior.  

On the baseball diamond, Hargrove earned Mississippi Valley Conference Player of the Year laurels as a junior and senior while primarily playing catcher but also doing some pitching for coach Mike Dee. Hargrove batted .466 and drove in 26 runs as a senior while helping Aquinas to a 24-3 record and runner-up finish in the WIAA Division 3 State Tournament. 

When Hargrove was featured on WSN in March he said his most memorable experience as a high school athlete was winning WIAA football championships. He also commented on the best part of high school sports, saying ...

"The experiences with your teammates. I have been fortunate enough to be on multiple championship teams and multiple very talented teams. Not only did I get many experiences that many kids did not get to experience, I also got to enjoy being together as a team for just a little longer."

Hargrove plans to study business and play college baseball at UW-La Crosse.
