Jolly Good Week 1 Player of the Week Nominees

Luke Baginski, West Salem

West Salem and Onalaska met up for the third time in 12 months, and not surprisingly it turned out to be another instant classic. The teams went back-and-forth, needing overtime to get things decided, with West Salem holding on for a 35-28 victory. West Salem quarterback Luke Baginski had a big game, completing 12-of-15 passes for 131 yards and a touchdown. He also led the Panthers with 26 carries for 147 yards and two more scores on the ground.

Grant Dean, Neenah

Neenah christened its new high school and football field with an impressive 49-37 victory over De Pere last Thursday night. Junior running back Grant Dean was all over place, rushing for 282 yards and five touchdowns on 26 carries. He also returned a kickoff for an 88-yard touchdown and had eight tackles on the defensive side of the ball for the Rockets.

Gabe Klatt, Beaver Dam

Beaver Dam's Gabe Klatt ran for more than 1800 yards as a sophomore but an off-season knee injury sidelined the entirety of his junior campaign. He came back with a vengeance to open the 2023 season, rushing for 228 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries as the Golden Beavers knocked off defending Division 3 state champion Monroe 25-20. He also had a team-high 10 tackles, including two tackles for loss.

Anders Stakston, Westby

Stakston did a little bit of everything for the Norsemen as they downed Richland Center 52-17 in a running clock on Friday night. The junior speedster caught a 13-yard touchdown pass, threw a 25-yard touchdown, returned two kicks for touchdowns, and had a Pick-6 on defense. This all came in just three quarters of play. He finished with 241 total yards and had five tackles on defense.

Gabe Walden, Muskego

Muskego got off to a 7-0 lead at Verona on Friday night, but the Wildcats came roaring back to take a 21-13 lead at halftime. The teams would go back-and-forth, and the game was knotted up at 35 late into the fourth quarter. Muskego drove down the field, and on fourth down, junior Gabe Walden booted through a 43-yard field goal as time expired to give the Warriors a 38-35 victory to open the 2023 season.
