Colton Brunell, pictured in last year's D4 title game against Catholic Memorial, set a new state rushing record Friday night

Late in Friday's 49-0 Level 1 win over Brodhead/Juda, senior Colton Brunell of Columbus made history. Running through the right side of the line, he picked up 27 yards to move him into first place all-time on the state's career rushing yards list

With officially 235 yards and three touchdowns on 28 carries in the victory, Brunell now has 6,985 career yards, which eclipses the previous record of 6,932 yards set in 2019 by Racine Lutheran's Tyler Tenner.

One of the top contenders for state player of the year as a senior, he's up to 1,867 yards and 29 touchdowns in 2023 as the Cardinals are eyeing a possible return trip to Camp Randall, this time in Division 5. As a junior when Columbus won a Division 4 state title, Brunell carried the ball 319 times for 2,897 yards and 43 touchdowns.

A four-year varsity performer, Brunell played defense as a freshman in the 2020 spring season before bursting onto the scene with 2,221 rushing yards as a sophomore.

Brunell has a chance to become the first player in state history to go over 7,000 career rushing yards, needing just 15 yards to reach the mark as the Cardinals take on Prairie du Chien next week in Level 2.
