Athlete of the Week Nominees: October 16-22

Brock Bjerke, Hudson

Bjerke took home top medalist honors this past weekend at the WIAA Division 1 cross country sectional at Menomonie. The senior runner will head to the state meet this Saturday after completing the 5000 meter course in 15:52.2, which was three second better than teammate Addisu Haverly. Bjerke's finish helped Hudson win the team title sectional as well. Last season as a junior Bjerke finished 59th at the state meet and is primed to do better this year.

Jack Bretzmann, New Berlin Eisenhower

Bretzmann found the net often in the two New Berlin Eisenhower regional soccer matches. The junior forward began his week off by scoring four goals and adding an assist in an 8-0 win over Brown Deer. Bretzmann then scored all three goals in a 3-0 win over St. Augustine Prep in the regional championship. His seven goals and one assist are a big reason why the top-seeded Lions have advanced to sectional play.

Grant Chandonais, Stevens Point

Chandonais was exceptional and made clutch plays from the quarterback position this past Friday as Stevens Point squeaked by conference for Wausau West 32-31 in a WIAA Level 1 playoff football game. The junior signal caller completed 19 of 28 passes for 283 yards and three touchdowns and also ran for 24 yards and a score in the victory. Chandonais threw the game-winning 9-yard touchdown pass with 1:25 left in the game to put the Panthers up one point, which ended up the final score.

Josie Peterson, Waupaca

Only two top seeds did not advance to sectional play in girls volleyball, and Peterson and Waupaca knocked off one of them. Before that, Peterson set her teammates up in a 3-0 sweep of Clintonville by recording 22 assists. She then had 36 assists in a 3-0 sweep of Merrill. Waupaca then squared off with top-seeded Shawano and Peterson had her best match of the playoffs thus far. The senior setter had 47 assists in the 3-1 regional championship victory. Over the three matches, Peterson added 28 digs, eleven aces, six kills and two blocks.

Ellie Robinson, Dodgeville/Mineral Point

Robinson ran away from the entire field, including twin sister, as she won the Division 2 La Crosse Logan cross country meet at the Maple Grove Venue. The junior runner ran the 5,000 meter course in a time of 18:33.5 minutes. She finished 33 seconds ahead of the second place finisher, twin sister Annie Robinson. Ellie finished third at the state meet last season as a sophomore and fourth in 2021 as a freshman.
