By Travis Wilson

The Wisconsin Dairy Athlete of the Month sponsored by WisSports.net (WSN) in partnership with Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin (DFW) aims to connect consumers with Wisconsin’s dedicated dairy farmers and the youth who grow and raise food for their local communities.

DFW and WSN are recognizing high school student-athletes who are actively involved on a Wisconsin dairy farm and participate in at least one WIAA-sanctioned varsity sport. Dairy is a vital part of the economy in nearly every Wisconsin county, whether urban or rural. Family-owned farms, dairy processors and dairy-related businesses generate thousands of jobs and millions of dollars of economic activity while contributing to local income and tax revenues.

Sports:

Neumann: Volleyball (Middle Hitter, Captain), Basketball (Forward), Track & Field (Pole Vault, Shot Put, and Triple Jump)

How do you balance farm, school and athletics?

Neumann: I try my best to devote my time at school for my schoolwork so that I do not have to do it at home. While at practice, I focus on that sport and tune out everything else going on during my day. Any time that I have not spent on the two prior things, I will spend going to the farm and helping with whatever needs to be done.

What hobbies / interests do you have outside of dairy farming?

Neumann: I like to garden, bake, and cook.

ON THE FARM

What is your farm story and how long have you been involved in the operation?

Neumann: The original family farm was in White Bear Lake, Minnesota and my great grandparents felt the squeeze of the expanding city so they decided to move across the river to a wonderful town named Osceola, Wisconsin. They found a 247-acre farm for sale that was located halfway between New Richmond and Osceola and decided that is where they would settle. They proceeded to move their milking herd to this new farm along with two horses and two tractors. Over the next 70 years, they grew the operation and eventually my father was the one who took over the operation from my grandfather. I have been involved with the operation for as long as I can remember. My parents tell me stories about how I, at about a year old, would be in a playpen at the end of the barn so that they could do chores and still keep an eye on me.

What is your role on the farm?

Neumann: I have many roles on the farm. These go from combining corn in the fall, vaccinating calves, doing blood draws for pregnancy checks, and cleaning the barn.

Who do you farm with?

Neumann:  I farm with my mom, dad, and brother.

What is your favorite part of being involved with the farm?

Neumann: I love being able to work with my family and the sweet animals we have.

Where does your farm ship its milk?

Neumann: Ellsworth Creamery in Ellsworth, Wisconsin

What product is your milk turned into?

Neumann: Cheese and cheese curds

Please share your most proud moments or farm achievements/awards?

Neumann: My most proud athletic moment wasn’t from me individually, but was when my Track and Field team won the 2022-23 Wisconsin State Championship. It was the first time in school history that the girls team has won and it was such an honor to be participating at state when we won the title.

With the farm, my most proud moment is still currently happening. Our average daily production per cow is steadily increasing and our list of cows that we have milking over 100 lbs has never been so long and I am still in awe about it.

What sustainability practices do you employ on your farm?

Neumann: We participate in conservation tillage, are a member of the Farmer Led Watershed, and do a large amount of cover-crops.

Additional Information:

Neumann:  I will be attending Iowa State University, majoring in Animal Science.
