Athlete of the Week Nominees: December 25-31

Amelia Adams, La Crosse Logan

Adams was impressive as she took home a championship in the 120-pound weight class at the Bi-State Classic this past Friday in La Crosse. Leading up to her championship match, she had recorded three pins and one major decision. Her major decision came over top-seeded Natalie Klavetter of Hudson in the semifinals. Adams, a senior, squared off with Neenah's Kylee Kurszewski and pinned her in the third period to capture the title.

Garett Kawczynski, Port Washington

Kawczynski and the Port Washington wrestling team traveled across the state to take part in Bi-State Classic at the La Crosse Center in La Crosse. Competing in the 215-pound bracket, the sophomore advanced all the way to the championship bout to face off with Prairie du Chien's Blake Thiry. Kawcznski, who finished third in the WIAA Division 1 state tournament last year in the 220-pound weight class, came out on top. He came away with a 6-5 victory, giving Thiry his first loss of the season.

Kon Knueppel, Wisconsin Lutheran

Knueppel continues to show why he's the best player in the state and one of the best in the entire nation in the Class of 2024. The 6'6" wing led Wisconsin Lutheran to a pair of impressive wins over the holiday week as the Vikings improved to 11-0 on the season. First in a matchup with a very talented Saint Thomas More team at the Rick Majerus WBY Shootout, Knueppel finished with a game high 30 points, eight rebounds and six assists in the 83-73 victory. He then had another game high 35 points, along with seven points and five rebounds. Knueppel shot a combined 24 of 29 from the field including a perfect 19 of 19 on two-point shots.

Teagan Mallegni, McFarland

Mallegni surpassed a milestone in her prep career this past week as the Spartans picked up a pair of wins over the holiday week. The Iowa recruit began her week with 32 points, eight rebounds, two steals and two blocks in a 57-54 win over Sun Prairie West at the DeForest Holiday Classic. McFarland then squared off with Hartford and Mallegni came one assist shy of a triple-double. She finished with 41 points, 19 rebounds, nine assists, two steals and two blocks in the 85-78 victory. During the win over Sun Prairie West, Mallegni crossed the 2,000 point threshold in her time at McFarland.

Grant Warren, Marathon

Marathon picked up a pair of impressive wins at the Rick Majerus WBY Shootout at Concordia University last week and Warren was outstanding in both games. First in an 82-71 win over Kettle Moraine Lutheran, the Michigan Tech commit scored 26 points and added 20 rebounds and three blocks, shooting 10 of 14 from the field. Warren followed that up with 22 points, 14 rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals in a 57-54 win over The Prairie School. He again shot 10 of 14 from the floor. Over the course of the two games, Warren shot 71% from the floor.
