So ... who exactly is this guy from way up north leading the state in rebounding and grabbing 22.8 caroms per contest?

His name is Gunnar Greuel and he's a 6-foot-3 senior forward from Winter High School in Sawyer County. The school has an enrollment of just 86 students and competes in the Eastern Division of the Lakeland Conference with other WIAA Division 5 schools.  

Greuel's production on the glass this season has been crazy, so crazy, in fact, he leads the nation in rebounds-per-game in statistics compiled by MaxPreps.com. 

He's had some monster games on the glass, including a season-best 33 in a recent 112-96 league win over Lake Holcombe. He has surpassed 20 rebounds in all but four games for Winter, which is 8-6 under coach Joshua Hautamaki.

A mobile and always-hustling forward, Greuel isn't always the tallest player on the floor, but his nonstop activity and ability to sprint the floor has helped his rebounding prowess.

"Gunnar doesn't come out of the game unless it's necessary," said Curtis DeCora, the assistant coach at Winter and former head coach at Lac Courte Oreilles. "He's earned the playing time in practice. He's just one of those kids who doesn't stop." 

In addition to his 22.8 rpg, Greuel also tops the club in scoring (21.5 ppg) and assists (5.6 apg). The four-year varsity performer averaged 19.1 rpg as a junior and earned first-team all-league recognition.

Also a standout baseball player, Greuel doesn't plan to play college basketball and instead will pursue a career as an electrician. 

One of the top students in his school, Greuel's intelligence off the court often helps with his productivity on the court. 

"He's a very smart player," DeCora said. "He's going to graduate second in his class in the spring. Anytime you tell him something, he'll absorb that information and use it on the court."

For those wondering if Greuel's stats are inflated, keep in mind all of Winter's stats are compiled by Hudl.com, a service many schools in Wisconsin and other states use to collect statistical information. 

Part of the reason for Greuel's high rebounding totals is the style of play the Warriors embrace. They love to play fast and hope to get up more than 80 shots in a game. 

"We play and up-tempo style," DeCora said. "We put 83 or 84 shots up in a game. Even our opponents have guys with 16 or 17 rebounds because there are so many possessions."
