Athlete of the Week Nominees: January 22-28

Joe Ascher, Wautoma

Ascher had a week to remember as he led the Wautoma boys basketball team to a pair of wins. The senior wing scored 22 points and added four rebounds, two assists, two steals, and a block in a 77-52 win over Princeton/Green Lake. He one-upped that performance by scoring 35 points in a 73-35 win over Westfield. He added five steals, four rebounds, and two assists. In the win over Westfield, Ascher became the program's all-time leading scorer with 1,517 career points. He passed older brother Gabe to do so.

Jillian Kunert, Northwestern

Kunert is playing at a very high level as just a freshman on the Northwestern girls basketball squad. The Tigers won three straight games last week and Kunert filled the stat sheets in each. In a 61-20 win over Spooner, the 6'0" freshman had nine points, eight rebounds, eight blocks and three steals. She then had 14 points, 18 rebounds, nine blocks and a steal in a 55-32 win over Ashland. Kunert finished the week off with 18 points, 13 rebounds, six blocks and a steal in a tight 57-55 win over Osceola. As just a freshman, Kunert leads the entire state with 68 blocks, averaging four per game.

Grant Manz, Kiel

The Kiel boys basketball team is one of just four undefeated teams left in the state and Manz has been a key piece as to why. Sitting at 6'6", the senior forward is a monster on the glass and has become a better scoring option this season. Last week he came one rebound short of three double-doubles. Manz first had 12 points and 11 rebounds in a 97-52 win over Chilton. He followed that up with 13 points and nine rebounds in a 77-27 win over North Fond du Lac. Manz finished his week with 33 points and 11 rebounds in an 81-51 win over Milwaukee Juneau. Manz shot 26 of 37 from the field in the trio of wins, making 70% of his shots.

Quinn Smith, Madison West

Smith had a good week on the ice as the Madison West Regents picked up three victories. The junior forward had four goals and an assist in 12-3 win over Beloit Memorial on Tuesday. He netted two more goals and assisted on another pair in the Regents 5-4 win over Waunakee. To finish his week, Smith scored and assisted on a goal in a 4-0 win over Sauk Prairie. Smith has led Madison West to a 13-7 record and a tie for first place with 16 points in the Big Eight standings.

Allie Ziebell, Neenah

Ziebell is the top girls basketball in the state of Wisconsin. This past week she led the Neenah girls basketball team to a trio of wins to improve to 15-3. She started her week off with 24 points, eight rebounds, two steals, and an assist in a 69-47 victory over Oshkosh West. The UConn commit then had 19 points, five rebounds, two steals, a block and an assists in a 62-42 win over Fond du Lac. Ziebell finished her week off with her best performance going for 30 points, eight rebounds, four assists and a steal and block in a 71-59 win over Kaukauna. Ziebell surpassed 2,500 career points and moved into sixth place all-time in scoring in Wisconsin girls high school basketball history, surpassing future UConn teammate and Germantown grad KK Arnold. Off the court, Ziebell earned an incredible honor as she was named a McDonald's All-American.
