Hayward senior Avery Poppe has been selected as the rSchoolToday Athlete of the Week for the week of February 5-11 after a statewide vote on WisSports.net.

There were 5,349 total votes this week. Poppe topped all vote getters with 2,123 votes. West Salem's Megan Johnson came in a very close second with 2,084.

Poppe had a week to remember as she led the Hayward Hurricane girls basketball team to a pair of wins. The senior wing came one steal short of a triple-double in a 65-24 victory over Cumberland on Tuesday. She finished with a game high 26 points while adding ten rebounds and nine steals. Hayward then faced off with St. Croix Falls who came into the game with a 39-game conference winning streak in the Heart O'North. With the scored tie at 44 and 2.9 seconds on the clock, Poppe launched a three from the right corner that found the bottom of the net and won the game. Her buzzer beater ended the Saint's streak as she finished the game with 19 points, eight rebounds, four assists, two steals, and a shot to remember.

Poppe and the Hayward girls basketball team will finish up their regular season tonight with a game at Ladysmith. The Hurricanes earned a five seed in the WIAA Playoffs and will travel to Mosinee next Tuesday in an opening regional matchup.
